Or:

"Why did the developers reuse old levels and didn't do them justice?"

"Because Sonic Team are lazy and untalented. And they know we'll eat this nostalgia shit right up."

As much as I can imagine enjoying something like Green Hill, Angel Island, Scrap Brain, Wing Fortress, Lava Reef, Sky Sanctuary, Sky Deck, and Ice Cap Zone, it's not terribly likely SEGA can make something like that truly awesome and impressive. Anyways, it would still have the unoriginality fact against it. Yeah, Colors was good, but Sonic 4 was barely decent. Some people think it's the other way around.

My question is what can we honestly expect from Sonic Anniversary, and should we honestly be excited about such a game?

My point is simply, there's no reason why, if they choose to reuse old levels, not do so with a story.

Maybe, but I doubt people would care about a justifiable story if the resulting levels aren't as good as their namesakes. That was my point.

I think we should still be excited to a certain extent man. Sega are well and truly going all out for this anniversary in line with their revival and restoration of Sonic that began in late 2009 with Project Needlemouse (the first time Sega finally admitted they needed to raise the quality level of the games; something I read in an interview somewhere) which was roughly the same time that the Sega document leaked.

We have soundtrack releases and a couple of announcements to look forward to so Sega are clearly going for redemption here after the epic fail that was Sonic's last anniversary. As for speculation about the game the leaked Sega document indicated that Sonic Anniversary was an actual standalone release and Sony were requesting a special edition of this release with the old games included as a coup for the PS3.

Our speculation is becoming rather needless though at this point. We are at the point now where we need new media and news to determine what this game is actually going to be before we can have any more meaningful discussion.

PS. I'm still holding out for Ice Cap Zone remade in all of its bass-thumping glory. I love that City Escape is looking likely at this point (with new music) too.

I can overlook trying to put some sort of contrived story behind the revisited levels so long as playing through familiar territory is fun.

It's the same reason I try not to care much about what's going on with the Master Emerald when Knuckles in involved in a game's story for seemingly flimsy reasons: He's simply so fun to play as that I don't care about the circumstances behind his being there so long as he is.

Considering how Sega finds it necessary to involve a narrative pointlessly for the Riders series and other such projects, I would say that if this game was in the works, it's probably a given that it'll have a narrative as well. Not that I'm complaining, I'm curious to see what they'd do.

My only request is that they please put the west in charge of the story again, and maybe have them tone down on the goofiness a bit....

If I cared so much about story in a Sonic game I would have just stopped playing them at Sonic Heroes or Shadow the Hedgehog, seriously. Maybe could have gone back with Secret Rings, but just that game.

Why is it that I feel like I've seen this a while back? I Don't know why, but I just don't get my hopes up anymore. I'd personally like to see something taking all of the classic stages and "re-vamping" them, if you will, and a 3D manner, but I just don't get myself so psyched like I used to over Sonic games. I even went as far as convincing myself I really liked them (*ahem* Black Knight *ahem*) but in all honesty, Colors was pretty damn good, and I really just didn't enjoy Unleashed at all. I'm not really holding my breath, but that's just me.

All in all, anything is possible, and we could be blown away with something excellent. As for the music, I don't know. I've just recently discovered how much I loved the Sonic 3 & Knuckles soundtrack (after playing it recently), but I really liked that Crush 40 "album" (can you even really call it an album?) Which featured all of those non-Sonic songs on it, which were radical. Maybe they could pull a Street Fighter and just use a dick-load of OC Remixes?

EDIT: I apologize if I branched off-topic, I just read a couple of pages to see where people were going and what they were talking about, and then I skipped ahead and just gave my opinion.

@360: Personally, Sonic 4 was a decent step in the right direction, as far as Sonic's 2D games go, but I still think they needlessly dropped the ball with it. As for the announcements of announcements and some new music albums, those are nothing new. They're nice, but nothing new. They've been doing both for a while now. It's no more evidence of SEGA trying to redeem themselves than their marketing for Sonic '06 or Sonic Unleashed. Now, when they made Sonic Colors, which was preceded with no fanfare until a single teaser trailer, that actually turned out pretty well as far as 3D games go. It was an improvement on pretty much every 3D Sonic game since Adventure 2, but it still lacked some basic control and design refinements. Sonic 4 was likewise playable, but still a pretty weak effort and by no means an improvement over its predecessors.

We seem to have agreed that Sonic Anniversary is a new stand alone game. We also seem to agree that Colors was a great improvement over SEGA's usual Sonic titles, likewise with Sonic 4, some of you might begrudgingly admit. So, if we're to infer that things should keep getting better, then we can at least expect Sonic Anniversary to be better than Colors in particular and both Colors and S4E1 in a general sense. My next question is whether or not we're overhyping our expectations of the game, and if yes, at what point will we likely end up dissatisfied with the end result?

Personally, whatever Sonic Anniversary ends up being, I just hope SEGA sticks to what they say and makes the game beyond awesome, beyond your typical expectations for a Sonic game.

While I will say that its a step in the right direction as far as the franchise goes, it was a clear backtrack from Dimps' earlier 2D outings, at least mechanically, like the Advance series. Plus, the 3D model on 2D plains may work on DS but on HD consoles (and Wii as well) it just looks extremely tacky.

Don't get confused. We at Sonic Paradise NEVER backpedal ourselves. Our sources said that at the last day of Gamefest, a girl from the Sega stand made clear that she "couldn't say anything" about Sonic Anniversary. We never said that, it was her. Damage control I think.

By the way, I really believe that Anniversary is as I first reported. I trust the guys of Sonic Reikai forum.

The model was a 2D sprite based on a 3D model, similar to how they made the sprites for King of Fighters XII. On the iPhone it was a 3D model, though.

Really? From what I've heard it was a 3D model with nasty shading and blur effects. Still, whatever the case may be, its clashing horribly.

If the Anniversary collection is real, I hope they use the Hedgehog Engine; I see no reason for any future Sonic games on the 360 and PS3 not to use it.

Are you sure? On the Wii version at least it's clearly a 3D model if you use dolphin, I could get a 1440x900 screenshot if you want.

Keeping in mind that the Hedgehog Engine is a graphical rendering engine and not a physics-handling engine, yes. I agree.

They could decide there'd be little more hype if they used the Unreal engine, but I doubt that.
