Sonic Generations Megathread II

    The whole game is a disjointed mess. Classic Sonic is boring and you blow through the levels so quickly its almost as if they didn't bother. For most of them you can win by merely hold right and tapping x a couple times. Never before has playing a Sonic game felt like such a chore.

    There are a lot of nice improvements and the gameplay is definitely way more precise, the game just needed actual variety in the stages and well, more stage. The lack of difficulty factor is also sort of problematic.
    The game can pretty much be played with your eyes closed until you hit the modern era and then it turns into death pits of doom. I swear, I was discussing with a few people and we reached a startling epiphany that Sonic 06's Crisis City may actually be better designed than what we're given.

    I don't know. This just doesn't feel like I'm playing a game, it feels like a hollow shell of isolated ideas that were never really thought out completely. I kindof feel ripped off right now. There's no soul behind it, its just a very plain, calculated attempt to try to and satisfy us.

    Seeing stuff like this makes me wonder if I've played the same game as some people here, since the levels, Green Hill aside, are not "Hold Right To Win".

    Oh, I noticed that!

    Another part of that documentary that I LOLed at was the fake Sonic 1 source code, with an old Yuji Naka developing it.

    I wouldn't doubt Shadix has only played Green Hill Zone. How in the world someone could call something like Planet Wisp "hold right to win" and "over in a flash" is mind boggling.

    I dunno, he's played through most of the game. I'd say he pretty much knows what he is talking about.

    He contradicts himself - it's hold right to win, yet he keeps falling into pits and dying later on in the game. How does that sound like he knows what he's talking about? It sounds more like he had a pre-prepared list of canned comments. You could take his criticism and blindly apply it to just about any Sonic game.

    the line about this being a cold calculated plan to fool sonic fans is particularly eye rolling.

    Considering I rarely read the boards and have attempted to avoid any information on this game that wasn't blown in my face, this is not the case at all, and I wasn't aware alot of people were claiming that the gameplay was like that.

    Maybe I'm not giving it enough credit after only one playthrough but there were tons of moments, particularly in the dreamcast era, where I felt like I could tape the analog stick down and I would win. Theres always another path lower if you fall and you really aren't losing too terribly much.

    Its also like, impossible to die in the early levels, and you don't lose anything if you do. There are far too many checkpoints and the game never throws anything at you that requires actual precision to get past, at least until the last era.

    Ok I thought Planet Wisp Classic was annoying because of the Wisps, but fuck me, Modern Planet Wisp is a right bastard. It plays like Sonic Team thinks it should: Bottomless pits = difficulty.

    He doesn't mean you're repeating what people are saying about this game. He means you're repeating the comments people say about EVERY sonic game, which I refuse to believe you haven't heard before.

    Okay, Classic City Escape I'll give you; That level actually was pretty linear. But Speed Highway? Seaside Hill? No.


    ...Please tell me I'm reading this wrong and you aren't complaining that falling off a higher path usually doesn't instantly kill you.

    I like how you're putting words into my mouth right now. I stated a fact. You'll take any shit they give you and say it's amazing. You can like whatever you like, I really don't care about whatever you like... I just think it is a shitty game.

    I'm talking about the "hold right to win" thing being said about Sonic games in general. It's a load of bollocks, Generations has tons of platform elements.

    I want to argue this but I seriously can't wrap my head around how stupid your post was... I don't even know where to begin.

    Another shit post by you. I think this game is pretty medicore, but wether you think it's a good game or a bad game it isn't "hold right to win".

    And in response to your other post "Hurrr apples give you x-ray vision after you've eaten them. I've eaten apples before so I'd say I pretty much know what I'm talking about". There, that's how retarded you are.

    So I got a chance to play the Modern Sonic demo (still waiting for that PC demo though, I'd like to see how well it'll run on my laptop). I was used to the Colors gameplay, so getting used to this version of Modern was.. a real chore to do. Boost to Win my ass; the second Sonic started boosting in the air, he began to lose momentum. I dunno if this is a good thing or a bad thing though. I really would like to be able to rotate the camera though in future games, I'd love a good view of the caves in that shortcut where Sonic breaks the bridge. Moderns level only felt fun when you knew what to do, which I don't like as much. If I'm playing a game, I want to be able to enjoy it on the first run.


    Classic Sonic would be great if they didn't make him so heavy (which is apparently just a difference in a value, but beta testing everything gets in the way), and made the loops smaller (as someone already mentioned, they're overscaled). The S tubes also should not be scripted. But visuals, level layouts, they got everything else right. I have mixed feels about the springs, but they incorporate it into the level design so it works.

    Honestly if they didn't do those few things, the Classic demo would be great. I'm not as excited as I previously was though, maybe it's just because I've been having a shitty week and I'm getting bored of just playing Green Hill.
