The way I've always pictured an open world Sonic game would be a sort of spokes and hubs system - the traditional "levels" could essentially serve as corridors to travel between various parts of the open world.

  2. Yeah that ain’t bad. I don’t know why my mind keeps coming back to the original Jak and Daxter.

brings to mind the very first Spyro game too, where the levels were tightly themed to the home worlds. I'd be down for that.

So I just got to the Mechanical Collectable quest.

And it makes want to fucking kill myself.

What the actual FUCK is this thing? It's impossible. You can't tell exactly when the platforms are going to collapse because you are literally given NO INDICATION when they're going to collapse aside from a sound effect that you can BARELY hear over the music because the music is so fucking loud. The parts are so fucking tiny you miss so many. Sonic keeps flying off into the lava and it's impossible to recover... fuck... I had just renewed my lease on this game but now I wish I hadn't. I nearly threw my Switch against the wall in frustration. Fucking hell. This may actually make me hate this game now.

EDIT: And of course right after I make this post, I beat the quest, ha. I feel a little silly now. ^_^;; but that quest still sucks.

    Jack shit.
The only reason that mandatory quest is bad is because the parts don't flow into you like other objects do on the game.

I haven't had Sonic flying off in random directions though.

I guess it's because I was rushing and hitting boost/homing attack to try to hurry and ended up going places I didn't want to go. This is one part of the game where you don't want to mash the homing attack button because it actually take you backwards.

I did have it happen where I somehow flew into the lava instead of the starting platform when I got to the grind rail that takes you back to the start. Don't know if I was pushing on the stick without realizing it or what but I just... landed in lava instead of on the platform. Fun times. :V

Bruce had that same experience with the parts collecting minigame. He said it infuriated him, stopped playing the game for a few days, then beat it on his first try when he came back. I think I just ran out of time a couple times before I got it.

    This part:

It took me several tries to clear on my first play through and it was no cake-walk in subsequent plays either. I didn't have an issue with the controls though. I kept running out of time because the limit is very tight. The same is true of the skydiving minigame. Get hit a couple of times and there's almost no way you'll make it.

  10. I beat it on my first try, but only barely. Its uh...not fun.

The Koco missions aren't great. The game already has a bit of a problem of changing the rules between the open zone and cyberspace, any the Koco quests add yet another confusing layer.

Sometimes you can't boost, sometimes you can't.

One mission makes you speed up by collecting Koco, another has you herding Koco like cattle.

Most of them don't have any combat, but one of them has you fighting Towers by stomping on their heads because you'll run out of time if you try to fight them like you normally would.

It's really awkward. I'm all for the variety, on paper. Switching between the open zones, cyberspace and Koco missions is a nice idea. But arbitrarily changing the control scheme and removing abilities stops everything from feeling cohesive, and leaves everything imbalanced.

  12. Those missions are the worst parts of the game IMO. I forget about them each time I play and am always a little annoyed when they come up.

I like that SOMETHING is there, but they could have been done better.

The light puzzle on Kronos fucked me up the first time cuz I'm way too stupid for that. I was actually pretty annoyed with the game after that, but I immediately forgave it when I heard Undefeatable for the first time:V

  16. Oh that one. I needed several tries to beat that one as well. The time limit was really strict.

I'm sure its already been mentioned but if you ever play through the game again you can cheese that puzzle by wiggling the analog stick back and forth really quickly, the light pillars become desynced and it breaks the puzzle.

According to tails channel, in a Q&A with investors Sega expressed confidence in Sonic Frontiers and intend to invest more money in developing a follow up/other large scale titles:
    https://tailschannel.com/sonic-the-hedgehog/frontiers/sega-sonic-frontiers-qa/
“Q: With the strong performance of Sonic Frontiers and other global titles, will you be focusing more on products like it in the future?

A: We expect development costs for new titles to grow even larger in the future. We will strive to ensure solid quality in the development of major titles from our existing franchises. However, development labour costs will rise due to the impact of the global external environment, and we expect this trend to continue for the foreseeable future. Since it is necessary to take on these challenges for major titles, we are proceeding with a bigger budget, even from the basic research stage. Therefore, we assume that development costs for future new titles will increase accordingly.”

I still have such mixed feelings about Frontiers and even though it enjoy it, it ultimately it disappointed me. It kind of cemented what Sonic Team isn't capable of.

But the game performing well and encouraging SEGA to invest more in the production of future games can't be a bad thing by any stretch.
