Sonic Frontiers Thread - PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch, PC

On a side note:

Bought the JP Switch release earlier this month and started playing it a bit before bed… I’m so glad I bought the Series X for this game. The performance is pretty terrible and I serious feel for anyone whose only way of playing is this.

I do love the Japanese packaging though and really like the Starfall Islands guide book that came with it. I debated scanning and translating it but it’d be a lot of work making it comprehensible with the magazine-like formatting. Has anyone translated it already?

 

You could always just scan it for the wiki without translating it too.

 

Not really a fan of the Eggman and Sage relationship. Probably because it was developed like trash in the game. I just can't really buy it.

 

Sage is the only invention that has yet to let him down, consistently beats up sonic, strokes his ego, and protects him in cyberspace. It makes sense to me that he would have more attachment to this specific robot.

 

Yeah, I noticed it wasn’t up there last I checked. I don’t have a scanner at home but I’ll be at my girlfriend’s parents’ house for Christmas and they probably do. That’ll be my Christmas gift to the community lol.

I will still give translating a go afterwards since I need the practice. For someone who did a dual Japanese language and international business BSc. program, I’m pretty terrible at Japanese lol. Though in my defense, my MSc. had no language component so it’s been like three years since I last used it for anything outside of video games.

 

In the comics Eggman kind of treats Metal Sonic like a son, it’s not totally out of character for Eggman to have attachments to creations of his that do well by him (in AoSth Robotnik was very proud of the Egg mobile or in that Egg-o-matic). But orbot is too sarcastic and Cubot is too dumb for Eggman to respect so he doesn’t treat them like Metal or Sage.

 

So some of you may have seen a few popular people got a Sonic Frontiers care package, it was one that was filled with some toys and a hedgehog adoption certificate...

Well there was actually another one sent out to people too, only this one is more focused on promoting the actual game. Hence why I've called it a 'press kit'.



From what I could tell, there's around 10 of these out there, making this quite a rare promo item, it was only given out to people in the UK hence why I got my hands on one.

And oh boy is it strange, it's full of cooking items and even includes some ingredients. Because not only do they decide 'hey here's some cool promo items' they actually want you to cook a Sonic Frontiers themed Katsu Curry.

So I did... And it went really wrong!

Aside from the fact it turned my skin and tongue blue/green, I also successfully nearly started a fire, so that was a thing!

But if you would like to eat Sonic Frontiers, here is how.





Obligatory: Add this to the wiki under food =p

Important safety tip if you do decide to cook this, the food colouring WILL turn your tongue blue... If you get any on your skin, it will also turn blue... and it won't wash off, not for a long time! This stuff stains badly. Due to the instructions it wasn't an easy cook, e.g. notice how there's no temperature guidelines or cooking times, and if you don't cook curry's often, this is quite dangerous lol.

God, I'm half tempted to make that curry just out of extremely morbid curiosity. I wonder if it's anything like that cursed image Sonic 1 curry that's been floating around the internet for a while now.

Anyways, here's another tweet from Kishimoto.

I expected them to take a longer break from development on Frontiers! I guess it has already been over a month since release, though. Anyways, can't wait to see what they have in store.

 

The fact they're constantly listening to the fans is so refreshing.

 

I was in Japan around 2019 and they had that Sonic 1 curry at joypolis for sale.....wonder if its still there....

 

Forgot to mention, that was the inspiration for this. In the email correspondence I had with the PR firm, they specifically said they wanted to do something fun like the Curry from japan.

 

Honestly they’d probably make some good money out of partnering with a UK food distributor and actually selling it here. As I suggest this, I seem to be unlocking some long dormant memory of themed tinned spaghetti shapes I had as a kid…not to mention tinned meatballs. God, I miss tinned meatballs…

 

Damn, tinned meatballs sounds delicious to eat. Shame that there's none of them here in Brazil though.

Edit: I realize i maybe should not have posted this in the non-spoiler thread, but i can't delete it so SPOILERS AHEAD, YOU'RE WARNED.

I don't know how to feel about it, it's something i've never seen before and don't know where it's leading, because i have no idea how Kishimoto works and thinks as a director.

I do find it weird tho, like i think it's very normal for creatives searching the internet and reading public opinion and giving ideas thrown around consideration, but the level of transparency and acknowledgment is so new to me and dunno what that says.

I hope these upcoming DLC and updates are very much how Sonic Team decides to evolve this game, and not a full on dedication to what fans demand without considering how the team itself would want implement these ideas and even if they'd want to implement them.

And most importantly, i hope they're comfortable with their development, i don't want their success to become a chore.

 

I think Kishimoto is just a really nice guy who responds when he's tagged, even if the thread is some guy's fanfic of how the game should have gone.

Spoiler: Plot Spoilers

The pacing of their bonding moments and Sage's memory montage are kind of off and it made it more difficult to believe the relationship. I still did, but I think part of that was Sonic bias bc I'm already invested in the series... but to your average player I don't think their interactions are super compelling. I've seen streams / playthroughs where people get to the Sage montage and go "why are we seeing a sad dramatic montage of cutscenes that happened 5 minutes ago?" The pacing is just strange at times. Moreover, the scenes they show feel kind of silly and out-of-place IMO because they're not really impactful moments, just Eggman and Sage hanging around in a Cyberspace level while really sad music plays.

 

I’m currently skimming through the thread but good lord Kishimoto has the patience of a saint and I seriously wish we could kill this culture of armchair developers shooting from the hip with crap like this.

 

I am a fan of the idea, but the execution was poor. Not enough strong highs and lows, and yes, that montage was not impactful at all.

Sonic and Chip from Unleashed pulled-off the bonding-over-the-course-of-the-game element much, much better.
