I think, no joke, the biggest problem with Cyberspace is the camera being so stiff. There's no easing into any angle changes, so when you try to turn, the camera is turning with you, so it's a struggle to adjust with it.

I mean maybe some of the physics values could be different but I wouldn't be shocked if I found myself having a better time with manual control of the camera.

I'll have to admit, looking back at the other games, they definitely have much more dynamic cameras.

Frontiers' camera is similar to Adventure 2's, which probably makes sense because the Cyber Space levels are designed like Adventure 2. And I don't mean the levels themselves, but how they are often "chunks" of levels floating in nothingness. The tricks speedrunners use in Frontiers remind me of the skips in Adventure 2 for that reason.

Ya shame they didn’t give you camera control in 3D, especially given how backgrounds are essentially a void (but they add justtt enough details they didn’t look empty overall, so actually I think it’s an overall good approach… if they let you move the camera at least). But one thing Frontiers did in the 2D sections was zoom out the camera and thank god. I played Generations recently and wowww they zoom the camera in for Classic a lot.

Artwork and looking for post-grad work...
Technically, it took Unleashed roughly two months to sell most of those copies (2.027 million by Feb 2009, as seen in Sega's FY2008 third quarter report) than what Frontiers has now sold in a month. Still worthy of a highlight, since Unleashed has remained the peak for Sonic game sales (that are neither mobile games, nor part of the Mario & Sonic Olympics series) ever since the start of 7th generation. And considering Sega has stopped reporting sales numbers for Sonic games after the failure of the Boom games, Frontiers selling well enough for Sega to break that trend is a bit of a shock. (Granted, there was the one exception in Mania, which wasn't given in Sega's IR reports or PR channels anyway; Iizuka disclosed the numbers in a magazine interview.)

Assuming Frontiers continues to sell well into 2023, I think there is a good chance it could surpass three million copies by the time third quarter results are posted for FY2022. Which would easily put it as the best-selling Sonic game (again discounting mobile games, the Mario & Sonic series, and the Mega Collection [Plus] compilation) ever since Sega and the series went third-party.

    Source for this?

I'm struggling to see your point. It's going to be hard to convince anyone of anything out of context no matter what. Those moments are "hype" because of all the build up that leads to them. You can't just strip them of everything that makes it a special moment and expect it to work on its own. Describing the climax of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sounds stupid as fuck too to an outsider, but I'm never going to knock it down and I'm going to do my damn best to frame it for people.
Don't be ashamed about enjoying something. If it really connected with you then find a better way to express it. All you're doing right now is stripping it down or coming up with excuses to justify your own embarrassment about enjoying the adventures of a tiny blue mammal.
I won't have you slander Adventure 1 and 2's climaxes again. Go out and tell people how cool it is.
Same can't be said about Frontiers ending though. What a bore this whole journey was in the end.

It comes from an interview Iizuka did for the 30th anniversary with Famitsu last year, in which he says that "Sonic Colors sold a total of 4 million copies across the DS and Wii versions, but there’s no way to play the game on the current generation of consoles." I don't think it should surprise anyone that Colors sold as well as it did; the DS and Wii had huge install bases. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the Switch's similarly-massive install base is giving Frontiers a similar boost, since Sonic games have historically sold very well on Nintendo platforms.

Also, it's worth noting that Mania's sales numbers are likely to be far, far higher than one million - that was the number it sold by April 2018, when they announced Plus and before it was released physically. I (and a friend of mine) have noticed the game's a pretty solid mainstay at retailers, and I doubt they'd keep stocking it if it wasn't selling.

    Life.
Somehow I misread that as Find Your Undefeatable Hams. I keep doing that. I don't know why.

Oof. When Kronos Island: 6th Mvt plays, all I can hear is Strong Bad singing about Grumblecakes.

I was replaying some Arcade Mode stages, and I think this run encapsulates exactly why I love these original Cyberspace stages so much.

It feels almost as if the Open Zone design philosophy bled into these original levels, they let you weave your own path through them, plus there are lots of shortcuts to take. It reminds me of the level design styles of SA1 or a Classic game in this way, it's very fun. Hope they lean into things like this more for the next game's Cyberspace equivalent, because it's such a massive leap forward from Forces' hallways.

The deliberate slow down allowed for some tighter design in the new cyberspace stages, which overall were pretty decent even if there were only maybe 9 of them. Should’ve done more of that those custom levels

Honesty given how popular and beloved the Sonic IP is was almost kind of surprising to me it took this long for a single game to surpass Unleashed in sales.

But then I remembered the only three main series multi console game releases since then were Generations, Forces, Mania and then this game and suddenly it made more sense.

I do actually enjoy the Cyberspace level design despite how terrible the controls are but really all the levels, including this one, are very automated. Far moreso than anything from Adventure 1 and 2.

That's over two different versions that are 2 different games (same with unleashed actually). I literally said single game.

Yeah, if we're lumping Wii and DS sales for Colors together, we might as well do the same for the 16 bit and 8 bit versions of Sonic 1, or Sonic 2.

Who fucking cares if the Wii and DS versions are different? The Wii/PS2 versions of Unleashed were different from the 360/PS3 versions, you don't see people making that distinction.
