Sonic Frontiers Thread - PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch, PC

  1. I do agree that Sega's marketing definitely reeks of being tone deaf, but at the same time I can understand just wanting to ignore the cesspool that is the online Sonic fandom.

    Iizuka even directly acknowledged this by saying he knew people were gonna be divided simply because people either don't really have the big picture about the game or they don't care and just want an excuse to complain about Sonic.

    Yes, its a monster of Sega's own creation but they've elected to ignore it and just go about their business.

    And while we can give a LOT of criticism towards Sega and how they handle Sonic, I can't exactly blame them for not caring about the fanbase's opinions when said fanbase can barely articulate themselves and tend to overreact at the slightest bit of information.

    They wanted to push the hardware and do more realistic environments that couldn't be done on previous systems. They also implemented hub areas for the first time, which led them picking a city as one of the main settings. From there it became natural to populate it with human NPCs.

    Shadow and Sonic 06 were considered terrible for their bad gameplay, convoluted stories and lack of polish, not because they had humans. Granted, Elise was a great source of contempt in 06. The plot would still have been a mess without her.

  4. Yeah I had a feeling it was a result of them just wanting to show off what the Dreamcast could do. I suppose it was just the trend of the era, abandoning the cartoony look and trying to make everything more realistic and mature. Of course Mario didn’t really hop on that bandwagon at the time, Nintendo certainly had the better foresight to prevent that franchise from taking itself so seriously.

    And yeah I know the gameplay of those 2 titles is trash, yet it didn’t stop me from getting all the A ranks in Shadow for some reason, probably cause I had nothing better to do at the time.

    Still, I imagine that someone less versed with the franchise might be more inclined to attribute the story and cringe human characters as the reasons for the bad reputations those games hold. Yeah, obviously it’s hard to deny Shadow mowing down aliens and soldiers with a submachine gun and all the glitches of 06 have a hand in it, but from a strictly casual standpoint I think the ridiculousness of the settings and characters in a series that used to mostly be tame and happy go lucky did just as much damage.

    I’m certain there won’t be any of that nonsense in Frontiers. They’re obviously going for something a little more somber and melancholy, and that’s fine by me as long as the only true human we see is Eggman.

    Game informer issue released btw, expect some more information from them

    from what i got, + - the game start in Green Hill cyperspace zone, but it's a short one and work as a tutorial

    The way leaks and preview statements are going about, it sounds a lot like
    they're intentionally throwing you into Green Hill yet a-friggin'-gain just to throw out the Cyberspace twist and deconstruct the usual Sonic fare of the same old, same old. Too bad we know that ahead of time now.

    So....further reading i got is that it ( zones themes spoilers) c + - ontains stages that are inspired by Unleashed, Metropolis -maybe the one we saw at the trailer?- and another Green Hill zone, probably a proper one and not tutorial , also Chemical Plant-inspired stages confirmed.  

    Also the stages are numbered, like 1-1, 1-2 and so on

    I may be slightly late on this but I always feel like the modern design language has been a bit wonky. It should be pretty telling that fanart--or even Tyson Hesse's art, to name someone who actually works with SEGA--tends to change the proportions of mobians. And I don't think it's just a matter of differing artstyles: (these images are fucking massive sorry lmao I spoilered them for a reason)

    Even IDW doesn't really stick close to the proportions in the games. I think skinnier more anime-ish proportions with longer legs and less weirdly huge hands would work better and make animating them a lot less wonky (anyone remember that one-hour video about the animations in these games from New Frame Plus?), but maybe that's just my inner furryweeb ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (I don't really like humans besides Eggman in the games for the same reason tbh)

    @jubbalub Thanks for posting the GI tidbits. Great to know that they have a lot of confidence in what they've seen and played. Only thing that irks me is the Koco escort mission, but eh, I guess those are expected in a game like this. I hope it's more bearable than that Breath of the Wild quest where you're slowly following a Korok through the Lost Woods while making sure it doesn't even see you trying to protect it.

    The Japanese canon has always had humans and Sonic interacting to some extent (even pre SA1), although the distinction between the Human world and "Sonic's World" has always been pretty blurry and confusing. I suspect the lack of humans on the MD/Genesis aside from Eggman was just down to not being able to do it right.

    Western media (i.e. comics, the various cartoons) definitely focused on Sonic's animal friends more often... probably for the better? Hard to say.

    CiS and RotW (at least in the model sheets, and from memory) don't have nearly as much of a torso-to-leg ratio discrepancy as those OCs (which look cool, just not very Modern Sonic-styled proportionally)

    Unsure how I feel about going lankier ala '06 or Boom. We've already got a perfectly good-looking hedgehog right here, I don't think most people really have a problem with it.
    (... Well, the complaining about using more-or-less the same character models/rendering artstyle since 2008 (2005?) in the games aside, anyway. That's another tangentially related thing.)

    The evening screenshot is really pretty. I thought the game didn't look great at first but this is shaping up to be a day 1 purchase.
