How flynn writes them isn't that far removed from how they're characterized in the modern games. The dialogue is just less...annoying.
I'm kind of struggling to see how Flynn's writing in the comics really translates to writing for a game. Sure, the plot will probably hold up well, but comics are pretty text-driven, so the only thing I can really envision is a LOT of dialogue, either in cutscenes or mid-game talking (Heroes, Forces). If the writing is good, I'd probably be fine with it. When Forces dialogue was at least mildly interesting, I didn't mind having radio chatter turned on. But all told, I'd rather just play the game with only occasional dialogue if the game thinks I'm lost, sort of like what Cappy does in Mario Odyssey.
Apparently, Jun Senoue will be composing for Sonic Frontiers. That's nice.
It's like... Sega is actually trying
Well, I'm happy. Jun is always welcome in Sonic games.
Reading the article, I can't quite tell if they're just assuming that he's working on Frontiers or if actually fact. I how he is because I'm bored of Ohtani's stuff and TSR has one of the greatest Sonic soundtracks ever, but it's really not very clear.
It'll probably be the same as the previous games: Ohtani will be the primary composer, Senoue will provide select compositions and input. I think Ohtani has already indicated he's working on Frontiers too.
He did the trailer music, and I think he did confirm that he's working on it.
I hope Jun Senoue has a more involved role in the composition this time around (not that I dislike the other composers)
Also, on the topic of composers, does anyone know if Fumie Kumatani is still writing music for Sonic these days? I always liked her work in Adventure, the Advance games and Unleashed.
Looking at her IMDb page, yes.
Sadly, the last time she contributed for a soundtrack was on Sonic Colors. I really miss her songs and her style; she did some bangers for Adventure, Riders, Secret Rings and Unleashed. It would be nice to have her back. I also really don't know why SEGA won't let Naofumi Hataya do more songs beside what he did for Classic Sonic stages in Forces.
On a good side, we can almost expect Kenichi Tokoi for Sonic Frontiers as well, since he have been present since Sonic Jam for the franchise.
Frontiers would definitely be a great game for Kumatani to make her to return in. I like her work a lot, Levitated Ruin from Secret Rings goes hard.
Gaia Gate from Unleashed and Lost World from Adventure feel like they could fit very well with the vibe Frontiers has. She would probably write some very good music for this.
Yeah Kenichi Tokoi is great too! My personal favourite track he's done is probably Jungle Joyride Night from Unleashed.
Yes, I agree 100% with You.
Is she still working with Sega, just not on Sonic related projects?
Jun Senoue not returning would be a shock, as his involvement is just a given at this point. It's just a matter of how much of his contributions make it in, and whether or not they're limited to rehashes.
Having Kenichi Tokoi and especially Fumie Kumatani back would be far more exciting, and would really establish more of an Adventure feel. Even having Hideki Naganuma back for a single track, despite only having contributed to one Sonic game, would generate far more hype within me than the inevitable involvment of Senoue or Ohtani.
I tried to ask Jun about Fumatani a few years back, all he really said was that she's doing well but didn't indicate anything beyond that. Which is good to hear at least, but damn, I miss her music work. I don't even need her back on Sonic, I'd just like to hear any new work from her.
Gee, it's almost like the Classic Sonic songs from Forces were the most universally panned parts of the OST.
(I liked them though)
Senoue wasn't involved with Unleashed, Colours, Lost World or Forces. At most in any of those games he was an advisor, but did not actually contribute to writing or performing any of the music. His involvement is not a given. Ohtani is typically in charge of Sonic soundtracks these days.
'Ghost Town' and 'Egg Dragoon' are excellent to me. Both were composed by Hataya who just absolutely nailed that Genesis-era sound with songs that sound like unused tracks from The Hybrid Front.
The others weren't quite as good unfortunately; they tended to use harsher instrumentation and continued use of 1&2's drumset. The first time I heard 'Casino Forest' I wasn't very pleased.
She has credits for when they reused her compositions, but she hasn't created an original song for a game since Sonic Colors.
Not surprising that Jun didn't compose for the Nintendo exclusives, but I didn't realize he wasn't involved with the original Colours. I hardly remember what Lost World was like beyond all the spheres. He has still been involved to some degree since Mania. I thought he contributed to at least one cutscene in Forces though, along with performing on Infinite's theme. Since then he's been involved in every subsequent release, either with original compositions as with TSR or remixes like in SCU and various promotions. He's also like the face of the modern Sonic soundtrack, so only his lack of involvement would be considerably newsworthy or exciting to me.
