It's stuff like this (and the fanfiction stuff) that makes me ashamed to say I'm a sonic fan sometimes.
It's funny because Shadow would be a worse fit than Classic Sonic. What purpose would Shadow serve in any game at this point unless he's DLC? His moves are cool that's about it.
Yeah, Shadow's time in the series is long since passed. Maybe as an unlockable skin or something like that would work, but the series has finally moved on, I think for the better. Honestly, Shadow only ended up taking the better parts of Sonic's personality whenever he showed up. Sonic always had a side that exuded confidence and non-chalance (see Sonic CD intro, OVA, etc) but in order to differentiate Shadow from Sonic, they put those character traits into Shadow, cranked the edge to 11, and made Sonic a yuppie who occasionally spouts one-liners and inspiratonal cat poster quotes. I'm really hoping the hints Ian Flynn is dropping are true, because he's the only writer to get Sonic's personality right in the modern era... or heck, ANY era since the OVA.
A few of Shadow's personality traits are exaggerated versions of Sonic's, but his behavior when interacting with the other characters is generally different. Shadow's time in the series has passed as much as many other recurring characters' times in the series have, which is not really by any amount.
I don't really think Sonic's personality nerfing was Shadow's fault. It was more the general incompetence of the writers. Nobody was written well in the Shadow/06 era games. (With the possible exception of the Riders games.) There's still room for Team Dark in the Sonicverse, just not necessarily in the spotlight.
Missed this one during the live stream (had to sign out due to a tight working schedule) so I had to look it up when I returned home from work. The teaser as a whole left me perplexed but somewhat edified. It took me some time, but I've figuered it out: I'm simply curious about how Sonic's going to handle those giant mechs, not to speak of the scenery which looks more tragic in tone than anything else we got to this point. I like that he's in good company (Classic Sonic). I imagine its plot to be similar to Unleashed's with some SA/SA2esque twists and better character interaction (you know, like Tails NOT acting like a Prof. Pickle's personal journal). Good god, he looks so angry..
So this isn't a sequel to Generations and the teaser has a pretty serious tone. I don't really understand why Classic Sonic is here. Is Eggman messing with time again?
NOPE, IT WAS GENIUS. IN FACT, I REALLY HOPE THIS GAME REPLACES THE USUAL 9000+ FRIENDS WITH EVERY ITERATION OF SONIC INSTEAD, INCLUDING THE ANIMATED AND COMIC ONES BECAUSE SOMETIMES HEROES NEED HELP. Or something. Honestly, I'm just taking this one as-is. Basically, I'm getting the Sonic game I want with Mania. So I'm sorta kinda hoping this one's going to go the whole opposite direction and be a monumental cringefest because actually that's fun too. If not, and it's just a Sonic Generations mission pack, then IMO that's fine too.
@LimitCrown I totally agree with what you're saying, especially about Shadow being a good game. So was 06, but I'm not expecting you to back that up. Thoughts again after having a couple of days for the hype to die down: I really hope Ian Flynn is writing this, or the person who wrote Unleashed. Judging from the hints that've been dropped lately it's practically guaranteed to not be Pontac/Graff, which is great. Never hire the writers of a subpar kid's show to write for a series they know nothing about or you'll get the shitfests that were the stories of Colours and Generations. Lost World wasn't as bad but it still wasn't the greatest. It's had about five years in development if my guess is correct. The gameplay should hopefully be perfect. The trailer showed very Boost-formula action, so it's almost certain that it's going to be as good as if not better than Unleashed/Generations. Hopefully they don't pull a Colours and mess with the gravity controls and really make it horrible to play. Colours was so floaty and laggy... Crush 40 is working on the soundtrack in some way. That's a definite yes from me. Especially good considering Johnny's voice seems to be recovering post-Live!. I hope we get a brand new vocal theme for this game. Seeing as though this isn't Generations 2 (yay, because it feels way too soon), I'm intrigued by Classic's presence. Honestly when I thought this was Gens2 I was pissed at Classic's presence, but granted it isn't Gens2 and we don't have Pontac/Graff anymore it looks like he'll actually be plot relevant and not just there for nostalgia and marketing. If Sonic Team somehow can slot other characters into the Boost Formula, I'll be really happy. I'm still holding on to "what if" about the presence of other playable characters (it's been so boring not having a proper game with multiple playable characters since 2006, I.e. ten years ago), considering 06's first trailer only showed Sonic, but ended up with nearly the biggest roster of playable characters. 06 was way better than the Game Grumps made it out to be. If you're going to play a game, don't watch the Game Grumps first. I can now see they went out of their way to find glitches and dick on 06 and Shadow. Rewatching their playthroughs is just so cringy now, especially since their jokes are so DAMN irrelevant, or used to death within a minute of coming up with them. Classic Sonic can boost now, apparently. I'm hoping we get some form of Adventure gameplay back. The Adventure games had perfect low-speed manoeuvring and general gameplay, at least for Sonic. I'm hoping that Modern Sonic's restricted to 3D only and Classic's restricted to 2D only, or neither are restricted. It just felt so redundant having 2D sections in Modern levels. I also really hope we get a boss fight out of those giant mechs. I remember when the Generations giant mech was showcased, that I was hoping for the ability to fight as Modern Sonic, with stuff like quickstepping to dodge the arms and having to run up the arm when it gets embedded in the solid ground. The new game looks sick. I'm honestly more hyped for PS'17 than Mania. Mania honestly looks really fangamey. I'm hoping it has some continuity relevance or explains some backstory or something. I'm dying from lack of decent plot and lore in the recent games.
There are other people who actually care about the story in Sonic games? Neato Fully agree about Ian Flynn. He clearly has a better grasp of the characters than anyone else at this point. In any case, I really hope that teaser was indicative of the actual tone of the game.
Well, there's still the possibility that they let Iizuka write the story again. Then we'd have a complete mess of a story with the president of the United States Federation arguing with the GUN commander, Shadow acting like a clichéd emo kid, "damn forth chaos emeralds", lots of plot holes, etc... ...in other words, a funnier story than any Sonic game that actually tried to be funny. But in all seriousness, I hope they get someone from the current Archie team to write the story for Sonic 2017, because the characters in the comics have been consistantly in-character and likeable, even in the freakin' Boom comics! Sonic, Tails, Shadow etc. have been represented so well in the comics, and the games deserve the same. Not the Mario-esque bore that was 06-Sonic, the "jokester" Sonic, and not the current "meme"-Sonic.
Wait, have we heard anything about Crush 40 or at the least Jun Senoue working on the soundtrack? Just saying, that sounds like wishful thinking. I kind of figured Ohtani was the main guy now. As long as they don't have him do the whole game again like Lost World, I'll be happy.
So, yeah. General thoughts from me are basically- Lol... from the Team behind Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations. (btw I thought the sonic teams were Team Storybook/Colours/Lost World and Team Unleashed HD/Generations, am I wrong?) Kinda looks like "How the story for Sonic 2006 should have been done..." City Escape Bad Future. Those Eggman's Robots look cool. Please be called Eggsterminators. Ok, so the story is Eggman has won and Sonic is the goodie. So far so Sonic The Comic. I like this. Even heroes need help. At this point I remembered there was talk of next Sonic game being a celebration of Sega as well as Sonic. So in my mind I was thinking maybe a Sega character and then pop! Classic Sonic. So its going to be called Sonic Resistance then. I'm not sure if the trailer is in game graphics or pre-rendered. I don't know how to feel. In a way I'm happy they are seemingly doing a big story Sonic game again. And in another there is Classic Sonic. I love Classic Sonic but its confused me. Oh well.
I missed out on this being announced initially (my home internet went down) so I'm just catching up. I'm very surprised they've brought Classic Sonic back - but I honestly can't understand why there is a lukewarm reaction to this. Mania does look far more interesting, yes - but I'm still excited to see this. A continuation of the boost gameplay? They get better each game. This won't be any different.
Probably because all we've seen of the game is a CG teaser. At least for me it's hard to get excited for a Sonic game when I don't know what it's actually like. I certainly hope that it's a return to the boost gameplay, and it looks like it probably is going by the teaser, but I'm not going to get myself hyped because of assumptions. I've been burned too many times before to do that.
Johnny did a Q&A post on FB around the start of the year containing this: "When will there be news about the Crush 40 album? ~We are planning a few performances for 2016 to commemorate the anniversary of Sonic. We “might” participate in writing new songs for the anniversary game…stay tuned…" The post was deleted at least a few hours after that, other than that I don't think we've heard anything.
As others have said, Sonic Mania 100% satisfies the classic Sonic need. They can RIP 3D classic Sonic (unlockable classic Sonic skin would be fun though). I would rather have it be a playable Knuckles, Tails, or some other character we all mostly care for. We haven't had quality playable alternate characters in a 3D title in too long. The story is definitely intriguing. I love how they're bringing back a big and epic story, like how it use to be with the Genesis series, and the Adventure series. I prefer more serious Sonic (with its humorous moments) versus overall a humorous/playful Sonic experience. So we can expect 2.5D and 3D gameplay. I'm not against that, it was fun in Generations. We'll see where this goes, too bad it'll probably be a while before we see anything! I'm, like a lot of you, more excited for Mania than this game. Both I'm confident will be delightful experiences.
