To be fair though, people are demanding the same here. It's ridiculous. I still think he should do whatever he wants, it's HIS project after all. Anyways, I like the fog you added yourself manually. I guess it just looks better when applied to the engine itself, because it looks much better than photoshops posted here. Still, people are sadly going to complain more and more... I just wish people would stop demanding so much and let him release his own work. It's HIS vision. And I think the engine is more important that nitpicking graphics.
After seeing this up close, I think you should stick to either the Classic Sonic model, or the rips of modern Sonic Games. Also looking at the walls in the Emerald Hills screen shot of yours remind me of the textures in Sonic Xtreme.
Yes, but since this isn't a team project he has the right to ignore everyone else's opinion and go ahead with what he wants to do
I think your work is great, congratulations. However, I think people are being a bit ridiculous by bashing Sonic 4 or this forum's Sonic 2HD project...Each project serves its own purpose and each has its own artistic integrity. To those people...as the saying goes...put up or shut up!
Wow, I understand. So, if he could finish his fan game before Sonic 2 HD, it will be so LOL'd. Maybe, if Sonic 2 HD has graphics like that of this topic and graphics of that guy (sorry, I don't remember his name) who made some realistic Chemical Plant's 3D renders in S2HD forum, this "problem of the DAMN PIXEL wrong" could be reduced a lot. I think at least he should borrow the same engine as used in Sonic 2HD, since it is pretty good and "reinventing the wheel" is ridiculous.
Looking amazing and shiny. It certainly feels like one hell of an upgrade to the original. Hopefully, those colours will make it look amazing in motion.
With this logic SEGA should just do whatever they want and ignore what we think of Sonic 4. It's THEIR project after all. Basically what I'm saying is there's no problem with us having opinions on this, be it positive or negative.
@Runner- Since this is being developer in an entirely different way, I doubt he can just use the Sonic 2 HD engine. He'll probably need to code his own. He can ask for help though, I'm sure some members could lend a hand if needed. @Sparks- Problem with that logic is that people are PAYING for Sonic 4. They can demand whatever they want because technically their funds are contributing to the game. That's why you don't see many people flaming fangames for being horrible, no one lost anything but time by trying them out if the suck. This is his work though, no one really DOES have any right to demand things are changed here. You can express an opinion but not post something ridiculous like "OMG this is horrid, kill it with fire, change it or else".
If that's the case, then hacks like Megamix and fan games like ET:CF (or heck Sonic 2 HD) wouldn't improve. People don't pay to play those, but they still get criticism during development. You act like having an opinion on something is a bad thing.
It's not. Sometimes other people can provide opinions or suggest things that we didn't think about in the first place, but we like. While I was developing my hack I constantly asked for feedback when I wasn't sure about my choices, I accpted some suggestions, and I discarded other ones. But in the end, I took all the decisions. This is what pelikan13 should do, if he likes what's being said, he has the free will to implement it. If he doesn't like a suggestion, he ignores it. Simple.
Opinions are fine. But I'm referring to the members who hate the inherent art style. This guy has a structure to his style. I'd hate for people to bash his vision on the grounds that it "looks horrible" with nothing constructive to add instead. It's a different looking game, but I feel it works. I'd love to see more in action. And I hope he doesn't change it JUST to please that one fan who can't live with how one minor thing looks. You can't please everyone. He has taken into account the most logical complaint- depth perception with colors. Fog and all. But I hope he doesn't reshape the graphics for the sake of EVERYONE who has a problem with the style itself.
I don't think he's expressed any opinions on his personal work, or how he's doing it. All the "style" stuff seems to be stuff other people (including me and you :v: ) are saying. He just seems to be showing off some work and seeing what people think. I do think the grass looks a good bit better when zoomed out however. The floor texture that was visible, I also liked.
I agree, I just don't want to see a promising project like this going to fail like Sonic Rebirth (the fangame) did, due of lack of tech stuff knowledge.
Sonic Rebirth was a game that showed up at SFGHQ quite sometime ago and at our SAGE events. No one ever thought it had that much promise and we even told him as much and how to fix it. Leon never listened and on top of that rushed his game, I'm getting tired of people here referring to it as some great game that just never quite got there. Bottom line is Sonic Rebirth was at at least 3 Sages and every time it got complaints and was never very notable. I don't think its fair to compare this game to Rebirth especially when it just started, isn't built on MMF, has 3D graphics, isn't a Sonic 1 remake, and from what I've seen so far isn't being rushed. Find something better to compare it to if comparisons need to be made. Oh and Sonic 2 HD has way too many cooks especially for a simple 2D game (that sounds bad but comparing it to Xbox games its simple). It is another bad comparison to make.
Project is looking nice, and I know some people here will be picky, so my advice would be of course look at feedback, and if a feature sounds like an improvement take it, you might even be able to get some people to help since this looks impressive, but remember this is your project, your vision. It might sound simple but make this what YOU want it to be. I can tell you want this visual style, or else you wouldn't make it like this, so keep it up and don't particularly listen to that complaint. You made the foreground and background separated, my main complaint and others is out of the way, that argument and advice given is productive, but asking to tone down grass is part of the art style for the game you are going for it seems, so that is a more of "in taste" thing than an argument, and since your the creator and making your vision, that is entirely up to you how it looks. So far this looks great. I'd even just be satisfied if you released the first zone and that was it. It looks impressive, and beautiful, and I will say very inspiring.
Very cool stuff you have here. I'd say that you seem to know what you're doing technically and you've developed a unique aesthetic, so just continue to follow that. I'm sure many of us, myself included, wish we were in your shoes with that level of talent and expertise.
