How was that not constructive? He didn't say it was a piece of crap. Perhaps roxahris should be more detailed in his complaint.

I'll fully analyze your music for you.

Intro (aka sonic 2 boss music) This is my favorite track of the whole remix to be perfectly honest. The tempo feels slightly slower then the original piece but nothing drastic. The strings all blend together nicely with no overbearing effects to distract from the song itself. You might need to slightly re-master the song, as some sections are quite a bit louder then others. But thats really more of a style choice. The samples you used in this mix are of a high enough quality to not distract the listener either.

Act 1 - The bells here seem to be of a very low quality sample, though this could be because you didn't equalize (or it could be my shitty work speakers). The drums in this track have a very programmed feel. If possible you should play with the positioning of individual drum sections. For example put the first and third hat slightly off center to the right and the second and forth hat slightly off center to the left. make sure that each hat has a slightly different position from each other, so the listener can differentiate between their sounds. Your snare has a very high end sound to it right now, you might want to equalize it a bit to give it a more fluid and live sound, of course keep in mind that eq will only work to bring out the best in the sample, so if the sample is shit it won't be able to suddenly make it sound like a expensive drum set. Your crash at the end is a bit muddled again, eq will solve this problem you want all the parts to combine not to clash. I feel like the guitar that kicks in at 0:46 seconds could use a bit of reverb or perhaps something to help its sustain. It seems to just drop after the notes end right now. Composition of this track is pretty spot on.

Act 2 - I mostly like the way this one flows and sounds. You have a bit of an affinity for the right channel in this track, you might want to consider pushing one of the instruments towards the left channel a bit just to balance it out. Drums need a bit of repositioning/eq but besides that I like how this track came out.

Act 3 - This is the only original composition so far. Most of the track feels busy, There is a lot going on which makes it slightly hard to focus on one thing. This clears up after the second transition (about 0:42 in that video). I think the main problem with this track isn't the quality, but the fact that it isn't that memorable. It doesn't have that "Stuck in your head" vibe that most sonic songs do. This feels more like the background music at a luau (minus the ukulele, which I would have enjoyed).

Well I hope that helps a bit, I'll give it another listen in the audio room later to give you a more detailed examination.

Awesome. See, this is constructive! EQ and the final mix are definitely some of the things I need to take more practice with (I mostly compose for orchestra and soundtracks, so never have to worry about EQ/Compession/Panning). The intro track is around 3/4 years old now so probably doesn't reflect my orchestral capabilities nowadays (youtube has my recent stuff). Thanks for your time in taking a listen and giving some feedback. Really helpful! :)

@dummeh I don't suppose you have a zip file of all your Sonic creations somewhere? I'd love to add them to my music collection ;)

8. I've listened to all the Sonic stuff on his website in the music section
There's also the Sonic 2 project he's working on, but it wouldn't make sense to put an incomplete project in a zip yet!

9. This fangame is awesome. It plays awesome (very accurate to the classics), it looks awesome. I get 40~50 FPS when playing on fastest and at 1024*768. Though it only uses 40~60% of my first core and 5~15% of my second core. My specs are Intel Pentium Dual Core E5500 @ 2.8GHZ, 3GB DDR3 @ 1333 MHZ, Ati Radeon HD5450 1GB.

I saw the screenshots when they were first released, and I have to say I was extremely impressed. I just played the demo (several times in fact) and am blown away with what you guys have done. You've created the beginnings of a true next-gen Sonic game that is far more worthy of the title 'Sonic 4' than the official Sonic games Sega have been releasing post Sonic & Knuckles (even if this is mostly a remake at the moment). I want to congratulate and thank everyone who worked on this project, and wish you all the best in your continuation of the project. You've made a lifelong Sonic fan very happy, and I eagerly anticipate your further efforts.

Hello retro forums :) This is my first post, and to be honest, my first video game forum to register to.

@pelikan13, Mercury and Sonic Fan Mix team I would like thank you for this contribution to the video game community. Let me first apologize for what I'm sure will be a long-winded post to you and to all Sonic fans. Skip to the Review sub-heading if you just want a review/1st impression.

I've just finished playing your demo, which was amazing. The best way I can convey my emotions is by explaining where the literal tears that I felt in my eyes as I played through these levels came from.

When I was ~14 years old(1994), I was hospitalized for 3 weeks with a ruptured appendix, kidney stones and a large abscess grown from the ruptured appendix. I nearly died. Though the truth is I should have died because, as it turns out, the appendix had already ruptured 2 days prior to the surgical removal of it. If anybody's familiar with this, you'd know that the poisons from the dead appendix would make it through the blood stream and eventually kill the body. Fortunately my appendix's location was in a place that contained all the poisonous fluids long enough for the surgeons to get to the effected area and install a drainage tube. But I digress.

Having gone through weeks of misery(if you've had kidney stones you'd know what I mean), I feel I've earned the right to be some measure of an authority of what it's like to "live" with the Sonic universe and love it. What I was not prepared for was the unconditional love my brother and father had for me. You see, in the first week of this agonizing journey, they did something very special and dear to me that I won't easily forget.

There I was laying in my bed with limited mobility, with the I.V.'s and caddies and all. My pops comes in the door with one of those large Toys "R" Us bags and a 4 wheel industrial cart with my T.V. from my bedroom. You can imagine my skepticms/curiousity seeing how my pops was usually concerned with my grades and health rather than my boredom. However this was a unique occasion, which I guess is why the gift that was to follow will, and always has been, one of my fondest memories.

First, the Toys "R" Us bag. It was a new stuffed Stimpy doll with a built in whoopee. Yeah so he could fart at you while you held him (I pranked the nurses and roommates with him a lot, hiding him under my sheet and making groans of pain while squeezing him). However there was another bag of far greater significance to this thread/forum, of which I salute you if you've read this far.

Inside this bag contained, what seemed to me, the greatest thing I owned: my Sega Genesis/Sonic 1 bundle(Bought it with my brother using my savings from a summer job). What was even sweeter was a brand new Sonic 2 they bought for me! I was aware of the game since it had been out for almost 2 years, but I was not able to purchase it yet. Money didn't flow that easily for me.

I couldn't believe they actually brought that huge tube television in the hospital just so I could play video games. It didn't take long before I was collecting emeralds to sport the Gold Sonic. How could anyone forget that?! He was like Superman. I spent hours exploring every map and every loop. I even used the headphone jack to blast the game in stereo during the night. Remember Mystic Cave? Pointless question ;) This map had some interesting character that I wasn't really used to from the Sonic levels of those times, but it still manage to grow on me. Loved the music. I had so much fun. Which leads me to this post.

I spent each day playing Sonic 1 and 2 challenging myself with different goals. I remember learning about the sound test codes for Sonic 2. It was so cool running it in debug mode. It brought back memories from the debug mode in 1. Needless to say, I became intimately acquainted with the series. Eventually when Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles came out, I too was playing them with as much eagerness and joy. I couldn't have imagined there would be a “lock-on” cartridge.

Fast forward to today and the past few weeks when I heard about a Sonic 4 game. After Sonic 3d Blast, I kind of started to slowly, secretly, stop following the series. I managed to catch a glimpse of some of the spin-offs, but really, I'm not sure what happened to the saga. Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) sounded like it was going to be great, after all, I played Mario 64 till my fingers were numb, and I anticipated that this would be the 3D version to satisfy that direction of the series. Sadly I never owned a PS3 and couldn't play it, save the 2 times I visited a friend who had one. Graphically it brought back some Sonic memories, but emotionally, I felt dead.

Now we have Sonic 4. I honestly believed(or believe, since I haven't played it) that this will be the wake-up alarm I've been waiting for. The videos seem great! The graphics and sounds are very cool. Still, something lacks. I figure it's the game play most people I read describing. After seeing more videos, I concluded that this is in no way bringing me back to my teenage years of emotional bondage to the little blue furry lightning ball. Depressing? No, since I wasn't really expecting to see another sonic game from the likes of the 90's, that I fell in love with, for the rest of my of life. Instead I just shrugged it off and figured one day they might get it right, but I'm not worried about it.

Review

Well here I am, sitting at my desk with a my Logitech dual-action watching Sonic on my screen in 1920x1200 resolution with my heart beginning to beat faster. I'm here to tell you, my heart skipped (probably because my family has a history of heart disease…) when I started controlling the guy for the first time. I literally had a euphoric moment for the next 3 levels. It was at this point when a couple of tears welled up in my eyes that I knew this game was tapping into something more than just graphics and dopamines. Rather it was registering with my subconscious. I honestly believe this piece of work is the closest thing to the feel and flavor of the Sonic that I knew years ago.

If I was forced to give a critique about Sonic Fan Remix, I guess I can go with 2 things:

First Graphics/animation. I noticed that when sonic jumps, his spin seems like he is not spinning as fast I remember his 90's counterparts did. There is absolutely nothing I would change with the graphics overall, but that spin seems slower than his speedier ancestors.

Second Gameplay. I wonder if anybody knows what I'm talking about here, but remember when taking Sonic on a long enough straight away in full throttle that sonic would begin to gradually, it seems, to get ahead of the center of focus? Almost as if he was getting ahead of the games “camera”? It's difficult to explain, but if you've seen or noticed it, you'll know what I mean. If something along the lines of that existed, I might have been re-hospitalized for going unconscious due to euphoric overload :D

Well that's all, Just 2 minor considerations. I hope the best for this project. Thanks for reading -adabo

I'm not 100% sure of this but my tests revealed that the Unity engine doesn't make use of multicore CPUs and run everything on a single core. The 5% you're seeing on your second core is probably because of other programs running in the background (firefox, im clients, etc) since Windows schedules them to run on the less loaded core.
Either way it turns out that CPU power affects performances only marginally because most of this game runs on the GPU (e.g. the video card). As I said once a few pages ago this game runs much better on my laptop and its dual GeForce GTX 280M rather than my main computer, an awesome tri-core processor with a crappy GeForce 6600 :P

Are you talking about this game, or the actual Sonic 4? You do know about the latter, right? Then again, given how emotional you appear to be about 1-3, it might be best that you remain blissfully ignorant of 4 . . . In any case, this fan game is not intended to be a sequel, hence the name Remix.

Edit: Actually, I think you are indeed talking about the official Sonic 4. Blame skim-reading on my part, albeit perhaps somewhat understandable! :P

14. Ah, that explains a lot. Thanks.

Going by this logic, the actual Sonic 4 should be called "Sonic Official Rehash"... even if it's intended to be a sequel (what the hell were they thinking is beyond me).

Yeah, one or two rehashed levels/Badniks would have been acceptable, but to extend that to the entire game is a bit ridiculous. One of the arguments given for the rehashing is that it introduces new players to the classic games—but wouldn't just one or two elements do that, while not boring people who've seen them before and want something new?

I kinda felt this too. I mean, It may be nice to make Sonic spin faster or slower depending on his actual _x speed, for example when you are going really fast and jump, the spin seems too slow for the speed he was going on the floor. Its a detail, but It looks kinda strange.

Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
Oh jeez....

We've had this discussion countless times. Sega's reasoning was to refresh fans that haven't played the original Sonic games in a while. Whether you agree with it or not is up to you, but that's the reasoning. Can we get back on topic?

I've asked before but I was drowned out by all the praise. Mercury, Pelikan. Do you or don't you use the pro version of Unity? If so, which version?

I can confirm this experience. When running at 1680x1050 "Fantastic" in window mode (so I could monitor usage) my CPU (Core i7 920) usage for the game maxed out at 12, while my GPU (8800 GTX) saw up to 88% usage (it was 0 when the game wasn't running).
The large majority of programs (games included) don't take advantage of multi-core CPUs. It's rather sad actually when we're already up to 4 cores (8 threads) and yet nothing really uses them. Still, the fact Windows will move things around to different cores (though they will only use one max) helps spread out the load, so there are benefits to be had.
