Oh. This is really nice, bro. I don't think I've seen a more nicely-polished version of Sonic in my life.

Though, I do have to point out a few things. (No one is perfect, and thus no game is perfect!)
    1) Optimization~ This is probably the biggest issue, at the moment. My computer can run pretty much anything. Or, rather, anything I have thrown at it. I've run Assassin's Creed 2 on highest settings, with no lag at all. I can emulate almost any PS2/Wii game(emulators fault if I cannot) with little to no lag. So, comparing that to this, I would say it is your fault for the lag. Also, I have tried it out on a friend's computer, JUST IN CASE it happened to be my video card to blame(compatibility issue?); but it turns out it lagged on theirs, as well. By lag, I mean I couldn't run higher than "good" without dropping below 15 fps.

    2) Design~ I LOVE the level design. Honestly. The only problem is that everything seems to blend together. A lot of cluttered things, causing the player to not see as well. I got hit by a few enemies, and didn't see them until about 2 seconds after being attacked. I'm sure you can find a way to clean it up, without losing the feel!

    3) Controls~ Well. Sir. HORRID control scheme. I had to set the controls myself, to figure it out. (WHY would I use arrows keys+num keys??) Also, WHY is "enter" the pause button, instead of "return"? One last thing on this note: Why are there so many buttons to configure? From what I have seen, there is only Motion, with the "A" button.

    4) Menu~ There really should be a "start game," "options," "end game," etc. It was a bit odd, to me at least.

One last thing. Just throwing it out there. ..You see, I'm developing a Chao Garden, for the PC. I'm pretty much done with it, programming-wise. Link here. I was wondering if you would like to "merge" our projects? (Chao Garden option in the menu?). The only thing this game lacks, that everyone seems to be dieing for, is a Chao Garden return. I think this would be a great idea, and the only thing really needed, would maybe be some help from you guys in my graphical department. (PM a reply, I would love to hear what you would think!)

Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
Everyone wants to be a part of a legend in the making, it seems. You better not pull a Notch, Pelikan.

If she/he does, we can always do another DDOS. <3

  4. Ah, now THAT felt like a real Sonic game! I would love to see this develop into a complete game, hopefully with lots of original content!

Gorgeous game, Keep up the good work !
Ran perfectly over here(Max Settings), no slowdown or anything.
Than again my system is running 3x GTX 480s

P.S. I've been working on a similar game in the C4 game engine, Sonic CD remix.
Not sure if your familiar with it. Quite a few level assets are finished.
Not much gameplay has been done yet, even though we started the project back in 2006 >__<

It definitely could use some optimizing, but it's running fine at 1680x1050 Fantastic for me with my (relatively old) 8800 GTX. The only part that stutters is when the "title card" animates in. The outward animation for it is fine though.

I think the control config thing is just a default from the Unity engine. Some of the control lag is caused by Unity as well apparently.

The game crashes like it's cool in Wine 1.1.42 on Ubuntu 10.4. But at least the videos look neat!

e: Should add: ATI card is in play. =(

Exactly. Im using a cheap ATI Radeon HD4670 (512mb), and its working really smooooth at 1024 x 768 (Lol shitty 15' lcd monitor here) but the max settings.

So...yeah, Im using a Dual Core E2140 (Soooo cheap), OC'ed to 2.8ghz (Because...I have a nice cooling and these cpus are overclocking beasts, so why not? :P), 2gb ram, Windows 7 x86, and this lovely HD4670 I said before.

I can play Left 4 Dead 2 on the highest settings with 2XFSAA at smooth framerates, so it doesnt really surprises me that this runs smooth too.

    ---

Aside the specs/framerate thing, the demo is ...awesome, the Act2 was...SOOOOOO Donkey Kong Country, with all the rain and the music! I loved the details, even if it was "a little overshaded" with too much phong, it looks really great in movement, hell, I spent like 2 minutes looking at the flags and palmtrees moving with the "wind" :P

Act 1 was classy, lovely, and the corkscrews were great! but hell, Act3 was...so...quiet, like, I'd walk all the level watching the dark sky, resting from the whole ACT2 storm mess thing.

    Im lovin' it. Really.

    Keep the nice job :D!

Bloody Brilliant, I am so happy this game (even in its short form) was released

Runs at 60 or above at all times at 1920 by 1080 at fantastic settings

(I would post my specs but they are well beyond the recommended so I'll just leave my input on that alone.)

The only bug I noticed was that the spindash doesn't seem to work if you push different jump buttons in sequence (like a b c a b c) but works if you just press one button (a a a a). Oh and by doesn't work I mean it doesn't charge up it just stays at the first level

    Aside from that, superb.

The lame keyboard mappings (numpad, lol) are again my fault. I'm right-handed and I'm so used to joypads that during testing I like having the numpad be all of my buttons so my left hand can control the directions.

Anyway, they should have been remapped before release, but it's just one of those things. I'm pretty sure I gave most of the buttons alternate mappings that more closely match what a normal human being might want, but apparently Start/Pause was a casualty.

Sorry for any confusion it caused.

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
May I suggest adding a pair of keyboard presets for left-handed and right-handed people?

Or people without a numpad, like me? *points to lame pack-in USB keyboard*

After a few playthroughs, I guess I have some constructive criticism for you now.

The sound effects (especially the rain/waterfalls) are WAY too loud. I appreciate the attention to detail, but Sonic games are known for having awesome music, so it would be nice if it wasn't drowned out so much.

Apart from that I've got nothing more to add. I'm hopelessly hooked and going for what is probably my 100th playthrough.

I'm honestly gob-smacked, I've kind of followed the whole Sonic fan game thing for years now and then this pops up and it just blew me away!

Seriously guys well done. I can imagine the workload and effort involved in this must be pretty phenomenal but the end product is just incredible. It prompted me to instantly write up a blog on this and a few of the members from a small forum I'm part of have now got involved and the feedback has been really great.

It's been a long time since I've had that fuzzy feeling when playing a Sonic game but you guys captured it perfectly!

  14. Even an article on Kotaku about it, although beware guys, they've made SonicRETRO out to be a community of moaners who hate everything, apparently most of you hate the art style on this and don't like it!

So hey, just played it on my gaming rig.

Gotta say, this is one beautiful looking game in motion. My dad came in the room while I was playing and the first thing he said was "It's a shame Sonic 4 doesn't look like this." It's an excellent piece of work. The controls feel perfect, to boot.

    Dear Kotaku editor,

GO FUCK YOURSELF! Most people at Sonic Retro really like the art direction except some of us felt it either looked too busy or could use less blue. These are legitimate criticisms and those who complain about those aspects aren't doing it to be whiny assholes, it's because we want to give feedback so it can be a better game. It's best we express some of our concerns now while the game is early in development before it's finished. While I'm happy to see the game get more exposure because of its awesomeness, next time try not making an entire forum community look like a bunch of annoying, ungrateful fuckers who have nothing better to do than to bitch and moan about every little thing that isn't flawless.

    -W.A.C.

    Just sent that email. :/

    Edit-

Your dad plays Sonic games? What an awesome father. >_>

making cool music no one gives a shit about
I don't understand why everyone thinks Sega is going to pull a cease and desist on this. They haven't done so on any of the numerous other fan projects, why would they here?

  19. Any idea on when a Mac version will be out?

I guess some people think SEGA would be extremely jealous and don't want something like this 1-upping them in the 3D department, especially with Sonic 4 up and around. I do hope some aren't seriously thinking that though, otherwise SEGA would've probably done something a long time ago.
