On the topic of cheap deaths: So far the only one I've had is in Planet Wisp 1 where you go off the ramp and then you're supposed to hit the 2 button 5 times (or whatever equivalent button on your controller), but only because I didn't read the instructions properly and only hit it once at first. Haven't got much further so not sure about anything past that. + - To add more to this - To get Super Sonic, do I need to beat the Game Land stages in single-player or does two-player net me the emerald as well? EDIT: Clarified post
I noticed something when collecting the remaining Red Rings in Planet Wisp. I have now 144 Red Rings out of 180. I collected all in Tropical resort, Starlight Carnival, Sweet Mountain and off course Planet Whisp, but in Aquarium Park and Asteroid Coaster, as with all others, each have 30 Red Rings total, so, does that mean I don't have to collect every single one and instead have roughly 20 red rings of ...space? I mean, I have 144, both Aquarium Park and Asteroid Coaster have 60 in total, so, to have 180 and unlock every Simulator Level I would only need to get 46 more Red Rings from the two, is that correct? If so, what do the remaining 14 Red Rings do if I would go and collect them? If my calculation is right at all, its pretty early here right now.
The one that really got me was when I was in the rollercoaster, and I saw there were some rings above me, and when I jumped to get them the game just threw me into the middle of nowhere. Also, the rotating 'conveyor belt' platforms on planet wisp killed me like 5 times because every time I got to the end I had to backtrack because the platform above had decided to run away on me. Back-tracking when the platforms are barely any bigger than sonic + camera being miles away = oh shit falling into the pit of doom *again*.
You have 36 Rings left between the two stages. Don't touch the control stick when jumping for rings. It thinks you're trying to jump to another coaster.
Exactly what I was going to say. Just press the jump button. Though the game is stupid; it shouldn't suppose you are trying to swtich to another rollercoaster cart... when there's no other cart besides the one you are ridding. That's so Master Systemishy.
Dude is right, colors gets cheap as hell as you progress, and it's a shame. The game is so good up around until the later levels of planet wisp and all of astroid coaster... especially astroid coaster. And if you're asking about "cheap", I mean when the game says "QUICK HOMING ATTACK SPRING OR YOU FALL". Those little ! marks only help when in a slow area, when you're moving fast you have no time to react. Normally, it goes down like this: *Sonic is running* "!" Me: Huh? *Sonic falls into bottomless pit* It's like saying, "Hey, I'm going to punch you! *Punch*". There's no use in a warning if all it does is distract you right before the hazard.
^I found Asteroid Coaster to be one of the best stages in the game and not cheap at all. o.o They always warn you when an endless pit is coming up. It was all easy really... Why is the final boss... + - I don't know why the Wii final boss is SO FREAKING SHY using some of his best moves. I was fighting the final boss today and I was caught off surprise when the announcer out of the blue he yelled "HOVER" and then "LASER" I was like, "WHAT?" since I have never seen him use a Hover ability and suddenly he's using it with a Laser ability, he flew above me and started dropping bombs and firing a laser and... That just came out of nowhere. I have fought this boss like 10 times and this was the first time I've ever seen him use Hover and I hear he also has a rocket and drill move, and I only have seen him use Frenzy a handful of times. Problem is he uses so much Cube, Laser, and Spikes I barely see him use anything else.
What's so great about astroid coaster? I think I still have 1 act to go but it seems pretty crappy so far. I have to say the worst part of colors seems to be the scripted...ness of everything. That's been a problem for a long time, but now it seems whenever you finish a scripted section, there's an invisible wall behind you! It's extremely frustrating to accidently go too far forward and not be able to get a red ring because some random invisible wall appears that blocks your path. It might as well be SMB, only letting you move right.
So far, out of the entirety of the game, I only found that I was killed cheaply once. In Aquarium Park, where the waterfall is. You gotta jump at the end of the ramp or else you don't make the gap. I also never have trouble with the platforming. The physics were weird at first (especially how Sonic jumps straight up and then seems to float as you hit the apex of the height) but I got used to them quickly to the point that I like to abuse them however I can (like in every other game I play :P). Also, I smiled when I tried climbing up a ramp at slow speed. Sonic climbed up a bit and then fell down, just like the classic games. And then I walked back a bit to gather more speed and I was able to climb it normally (just like the classic games again!).
I agree with Dusk Golem that this game feels soo much like Sonic CD if it was in a 3D space. In some ways, it feels like it takes the exploration aspects of CD but streamlines it to a more cohesive experience; linearity is there, but within logical rules that linearity can be broken. Why are some people mad about this game? I think it is fair for the later levels of any game to be cheap and rely on memorization - those are the games I grew up with and love. There were pits (albeit perhaps not a lot) in the older games (Scrap Brain, Chemical Plant, Mystic Cave (Spike trap you can't escape), Wing Fortress, Flying Battery to name a few). I think it is possible that a lot of us feel like the older games are better designed because we have played them forever and have their layouts memorized. Because of this, they are on an unfair pedestal that nothing can compare. I hate a lot of Sonic games post S3K, but some were okay and Sonic Colors feels amazing in comparison to those really awful ones. It even feels great in comparison to the genesis games, although only retro-active history writers will tell us which ranks above the other. In short - Sonic on Genesis/Mega Drive was the SHIZ and Sonic Colors is damn awesome. A different kind of awesome, but nitpicking between the two seems moot.
Same as unleashed Also, maybe these cheap moments aren't as cheap as I think they are if you guys didn't have problems with them. I'm playing with the wii remote, and using wisps is a pain, so maybe that could be related. Speaking of which, frenzy is really hard to control.
If you're playing a 3D game with a digital control pad... Well there's your problem. If you have a GCN controller, use that. Feels just like the good ole days. Or, better yet, get a Classic Controller Pro. It's a pretty damn good controller and much better than the original CC.
The only trouble I've really had with using the Wii remote is that it can be unresponsive when I try shaking it. Otherwise, no problems. EDIT: fucking hell created another new page in this thread
I was too fucking tired for this revelation to really register in my brain yesterday, but I was reading through the thread just now, and realized something magical: after being entirely ready for Asteroid Coaster's potential dickery, it didn't actually manage to kill me under any circumstances that left me in doubt as to whether or not it was my fault. I only died in the bouncy section where you have to Stomp to avoid those walls that push you off-screen for instant death, and that was my own timing fuck-up. I think the only time I died without seeing it coming was that waterfall in Aquarium Park, and although I'd categorize that as cheap, in my case I really should have remembered that it was there.
The funny thing is that I've died plenty of times, but none of those times have I deemed as unfair. It was basically my whole fault. Even though sometimes the bottomless pits are large in numbers, I find the long ranged Egg Pawns in cramped spaces to be more annoying. THEY ALWAYS SHOOT ME FFFFFFF. How are you supposed to kill them without getting hit? The funny thing is that they're the only normal enemies I really have a problem with.
I don't think the only normal enemies, the Moles in the digging sections also get me as do occasionally the Caterkillers in Asteroid Coaster and I seem to get hit a lot in that one section of Aquarium Park Act 6 where you fight the Crabmeats and the Samurai Egg Pawns. I actually felt there should have been some more enemy variety in cases, I barely recall Crabmeats appearing, were they only in act 6? Same goes got Caterkillers, I thought they were clever and sometimes challenging foes just they weren't really used to their potential.
DS Version, go me. I'm more or less hooked. I'm trying to stretch it out so I don't beat it in a day, but it's not going so well, haha. It's still pretty boosty. I've been hoping to get more use out of the slide move, but fuck, if I can just boost through everything, why bother? Special stage is great. I was so happy when I saw it's the return of the half pipe. I was disappointed when I didn't get a giant Ferris Wheel boss
