They look like Luma from Mario Galaxy. There is even a playground orbiting the planet? Are they serious?

They could have just used Chao really.

But still, their Wisps and their cute. I mean out of all the random new... "Characters" that have been added I certainly think they aren't a bad addition so far. Though then again I did let Chip, Eggman's Assistant, and Professor Pickle grow on me in Unleashed.

Chao just suddenly developing power-up powers would be stupid. Besides, their story was told in Sonic Adventure.

And it's not a playground, it's an amusement park.

Sonic Blast != Sonic 3D Blast on Game Gear

(It's also arguably unfair to consider Sonic 2 for the Game Gear to be a portable version of the real Sonic 2 in any way, but meh. Oh, and if the iPhone version of Sonic Unleashed counts, then that would be the first console + portable Sonic since.)

Anyway... I'm interested in how the game will be ported, as well. Will it use the same soundtrack? Will it have to be sprites and handdrawn backgrounds on the DS, or will it just be crappy 3D with the same assets?

Not quite. Even compared to God of War, it dumbed down the experience substantially and tried to mix the combat with 3D Ristar style platforming while using a character that felt very clunky to use at times. In that aspect, the Werehog is a perfect storm.

Sonic 1 was the first console/portable port ever, because it was a direct port from the SMS version. While Sonic 1 SMS itself is a low-end port of the original, it is still valid to say that the game was the first to have a 1:1 port to a portable device from a home console, since the GG version is pretty much identical to the SMS version.

That being said, the same is valid to Sonic 2 and Sonic Chaos.

In fact, I find it strange how people don't realize that piling on new characteristics on an existing character is a quick way to turn them into a Marty Stu.

That's not why I'd rather see the chao. I'd rather see the chao because I'd like a game where the chao return, and if chao suddenly getting power-ups is so odd, why did they do it in Dark Brotherhood?

Edit: And I doubt that everyone else has a problem with new friends in a Sonic game if they do something useful. The chao had a lot of fans, I'm not surprised that some feel they would have been just as good. But meh, new faces = illusion of new experience.

I belive there are no problems in new friends at all. And I belive the mainstream have no problem with them either. The corncern is when these supposed new friends become available playable characters. See: the bandwaggon from Sonic Heroes/Silver the Hedgehog

Fixed. There's nothing wrong with providing an option to play as Rouge the Twat, but if I don't want to play as her, I shouldn't have to.

Anyway, the Chao are essentially Flicky replacements anyway. Sure, Flickies popped out of animals in the Adventure series, but they were soon forgotten about, mainly because we had Chao filling the "small animal" role instead. I just see these aliens as Flickies v3.

I wouldn't say it's when they become playable that we start to hate them. Rather, it's more when they're annoying extra characters that overshadow Sonic and everyone else. Blaze seemed to completely avert the common problems in Rush, and Chip was alright for the most part in Unleashed. Silver is the perfect example though.

These little fellas are adorable though, and no doubt the one with curly hair the new Chip.

Ok, I have got to say this slightly related story, it's too funny to keep to myself:

About 10 years ago my little brother and made up some fancharacters (hey, we were young, I was 6 and he was like 3. It sounded cool back then) and his was a character with the power of colors who created a color planet that revolved around Mobius.

This means SEGA's come up with something a 3 year old LITERALLY DID (BASICALLY) COME UP WITH.

Haha, I know right? In fact, the imaginations we should respect the most are the ones of children, because eventually we forget to think that way. This game should appeal to anyone who understands the importance of staying lighthearted and childlike, and won't appeal to anyone with a stick up their ass.
