Wow, the writing is actually amusing. There's very few times I've smiled at something in a recent Sonic game because it was actively trying to be funny and not because of camp value (like poor voice acting, model animations, or writing). With this game, pretty much every line I've seen leaked has genuine humor.

God bless the Madworld writing team, who are apparently behind the script in this game.

No Badnik's want to catch you playing dirty. They're almost as bad as the Sonic fanbase. ;D

Thanks to Gato on Stadium for that. I do find it amusing how many of the Badniks won't let you home attack them while Egg Pawns do. And Crabmeat having homing rockets is amusing as well.

A FEW MORE NOTES FROM DREAD FOR COLORS:

    * You can HA some badniks, note I said 'you can't HA most badniks' in the preview - Buzzbombers in Sweet Mountain and Crabmeats in Aquatic Park are two examples of classic badniks that can be HA'd.
    * Spiny's and Motobugs can't be HA'd. Neither can underwater badniks. You only encounter Burrobots while drilling, so you obviously can't HA those either.
    * 3D underwater areas don't equal 'sudden death,' mostly because there are no real 3D underwater areas to speak of. All underwater activity is done in 2D.
    * To the above point, if you mean like in Unleashed where Sonic will instantly die if he touches a foot of water during the 3D segments, you don't need to worry. Bottomless hazards are always identified as bottomless pits, there are no watery quagmires that will suck you in. In Aquatic Park, when you come up to an area of water in 3D, the camera automatically pans back round to 2D view. You can boost along like Jesus, or fall and plunge into the water.
    * There are ways of getting around the uncurling - the easiest (and probably most fun) is to stomp. But it can be a pain in the arse when underwater and you want to bop a Chopper, and you uncurl just before you land on it.
    * No side-missions, no mini-games. The only thing you'll be playing are Acts within worlds, or the Game Land/Sonic Simulator (which is essentially the same as the 1-player Story levels anyway). There are no other gameplay mechanics besides bosses.
    * You can play Sonic Simulator on your own. Pressing the 1 or 2 button (in the Wii Remote + Nunchuk configuration) will allow you to switch between 'RoboSonic Player 1' and 'RoboSonic Player 2' (not official names). That's what the red ball is, following you around - it's the other 'RoboSonic'.
    * Although you can get pushed off the screen in multiplayer mode, you can escape death and the loss of a life by pressing the 1 or 2 button (Wiimote+Nunchuk config) - you'll turn back into a spinning ball and follow the remaining player around the level, until you press something and jump back into the action.

Hey Kids! It's time for another installment of "Iizuka Says!!!"

    http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=265684

Bah, all the interviewer really goes on about is, "Hey this Sonic game might actually be good, are you going to port it to 360 & PS3?" over and over.

As an added bonus we have our uninformed fans worried about things they shouldn't be.

"Christ, when will they realise that running really really fast was only fun in 2D??"

Apparently they did over a year ago since the majority of this game is 2D. That and a main point of this game is that there's more than just running very fast and the game is equal part platforming.

According to what I've heard, it's writers from Madworld and Happy Tree Friends. The bit about the Happy Tree Friends worries me, but Madworld's writing was spectacular. Those announcers were excellent - there wasn't one thing that they said that didn't make me laugh.

Iizuka stressed in that CVG interview that it's really hard for the team to appeal to the two very different fans: 2D and 3D. It seems like a contradictory and shortsighted concern. Sonic Colours is allegedly more 2D that Unleashed was, while still maintaining the speed of Unleashed balanced by the control of let's say Sonic Adventure 1 or 2, or a reasonable facsimile. Sonic can work in both settings, and it's only a shortsighted lack of vision and effort that might alienate fans of the hedgehog between its 2D and 3D games. If the 2D elements of platforming and momentum-based speed and the 3D elements of exploration and sheer velocity can be synthesized into a (series of) coherent, stylish, and fresh new game(s), then you've got a more or less unified fanbase and market share. Quality improvements on time-tested quality is all.

That being said, the effort with Sonic 4 certainly is welcome and sensible. Totally retro for a totally retro (as well as initiated) downloadable games crowd. It just could be a lot better, that's all. More exciting like Colors in any case.

    Sounds great, some minor worries...

This is always a bad thing to say >.<

I find it... odd that sonic uncurls after he reaches the top of his jump. I mean, don't you normally hit enemies by LANDING on them? You'd be better off boosting an enemy or using the HA, why did they make the jump stop being an attack, at least when landing?

If there really are 3 more levels like he says (pretty sure there are only two) this could end up being a problem. Especially if the last stage is some sort of eggmanland stage, full of bottomless pits.

I think we know at this point that the game is complete, and I doubt stuff like this will be changed unless the game is delayed. Of course, the way he describes it, it's not a big deal, but I'm worried about these next 2 stages. Sonic unleashed also started off much more forgiving.

Other than that, and the length thing (I'm guessing the length just comes from collecting those special rings and multiplayer), I'm really excited for this... I just wish it would come out already!

Really liking this new water level. Looks like a mix of Chun-nan and Pirate Storm from Secret Rings (the cave section), IMO.

    Likewise. Why, helo thar NTom64!

I'd also like it if they fix the uncurling issue here as well, that just makes no sense. Perhaps they could pick up on the advice in my signature. Seriously, guys. I'm not charging anything. You don't have to give me a blank check.

That was in MegaMix, and I didn't like it. Mostly just because it's kinda hard to use properly, but it is useful.

Wait a second hold up... they said wisps were optional, so why was there a tropical resort zone FOCUSED around the laser whisp? You had to use it a couple of times in the level, too.

They said the main game could be completed without using a Wisp. The Tropical Resort ACT you saw was very likely an extra act.

Right, so if only the first 2 acts are mandatory, I'm all the more confused on how this game seemingly is 20 hours long.

Svend said something about how much time he spent trying to S Rank the stages, as they're much more fun than stages from past 3D games. Whether or not the story really is that long, it seems as though there's plenty of replay value to the game, and not just because there are a vast number of stages.

Fallout 3 can be completed in about 6-10 hours if you only focus on the storyline missions. You explore, take your time, and it lasts you well over 50. The same here. It is probably 20+ hours if you include the 'extra' acts. It's a shame they have added shorter acts, but hey. It's PR speak at the end of the day, and they are technically correct in what they say, even if it's not how you want. Ever dealt with the devil?

To be fair, I spent way more time than he did when I first got unleashed. And unleashed has a ton of content. I guess what I'm saying is, why is boasting about 20 hours of gameplay through replaying levels impressive? They said 20 hours and if they meant from getting those medals and replaying stages for S ranks, that's disappointedly short compared to unleashed, and even SA1.

Frankly I'd rather it be just programmed in such a way that Sonic does not uncurl every time he jumps or rolls off a half-pipe or something. Occam's Razor is the way to go in this instance.

Um...Happy Tree Friends, despite the title, is not a children's show. It is quite the opposite, really.

Yeah, Happy Tree Friends is quite a violent show besides the name. It's about small cartoon animals being horribly disconfigured, loosing eyes, body parts, and dying horrible deaths... Yeah I know, the name is misleading.

So a bit surprising for them to be doing this script.
