So, I've been playing the HELL out of this the past few days. Completed a Team Sonic run with all emeralds, and nearly done with the Chaotix as well. Absolutely love it... this is one of the most well-done, complete hacks I've ever seen. Only major glitch I've encountered came when I was in Team Sonic's run, and I'd collected the Sol Emeralds but not all the Chaos Emeralds. Going Super worked as advertised, and getting an S monitor turned us Hyper. But I'd get completely stuck after a while, unable to move, locked in midair, etc. It seemed like about the amount of time the invincibility would normally last, and I assume you're supposed to power back down to Super after it runs out? This was in MD.emu on my tablet, so maybe there's a bug there? Ah, we also played it on my YouTube channel:
This is a very cool rom hack - congratulations to all those involved. It's impressive how many gameplay features it has. Would it be difficult to add a Battle Race mode, à la ColinC10's "Sonic 2: Battle Race"? http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=29392 Now that the multi-tap is working, would a 4-player micro-machines style mode be possible?
I'd just like to say that this hack is amazing. I'm blown away by the AI. Seriously. But guess what happened, I froze at this part: At the very pixel that was supposed to make me spin, the game just froze. Used Kega Fusion. EDIT: I did a little testing. First I thought it's got something to do with the gold shield, because it didn't freeze during a quick speedrun and I didn't have any shield when going through the tunnel. Then I played through the stage like the time when it froze for the first time, obtaining the third Sol Emerald via a checkpoint star portal and having the gold shield again. But after I played through again, this time not obtaining the Sol Emerald but obtaining the gold shield, the game didn't freeze. EDIT 2: Moved the picture, inserted new link.
The freeze is not related to anything you said. I have it fixed locally for some time, I just need to fix a few more bugs and make a new release ("time" being the problem).
One minor thing that just bugs me. On the character select screen, the Chaotix use Sonic 1/2 style continue sprites while Team Sonic uses the Sonic 3 style continue sprites. Other than that though, awesome stuff here. Just wish Sonic had his Sonic 2 sprites, but minor, not important issue there.
My guess is that Sonic will get his sprites from 2 in Team SegaSonic when that rolls around, since it matches Mighty and Ray's sprites better.
Actually, he's using his S3 sprites. I did ask if he wanted Mighty and Ray in S1/2 style, but Flamewing preferred the S3 sprites.
I hope I don't invite the wrong kind of feedback/debate/argument/shitstorm... But I feel like those sprites would be better if Mighty's skin used the yellows from Ray's fur. In the comics, and many pics he was a bit more on the yellow side... and those colors would be a perfect fit... Other than that... if your signature pic is any indication Xeric, Ray's shoes should use Sonic's blues. EDIT I JUST RHYMED OMGZ
Cool sprites. is there any way for Ray to look a bit more like the sprite in your signature? I tried myself, but it came out pretty "meh" with the gray darkest skin colors and I'm pretty sure that Ray sharing Sonic's blues will be bad for supers transformation.
The transformation issue just came to mind, though I think you could make the same argument for Mighty and the shoes? Then again that doesn't occur with Team Sonic so who knows... Looks great regardless.
So I was playing this nice little hack some more, and I stumbled upon more things; Tails' collission [sic] is odd. For example, he's prone to get (vertically) stuck to buttons and certain moving platforms, like the quadruple moving squares of Chemical Plant Zone. Another example is hovering over certain objects, like the Marble Zone green glassy cylinders. In Casino Night Zone Act 2, I encountered sudden performance loss of unknown origin during a fall, and suddenly there were duplicates of some objects; Which then rendered me unable to get out, and losing my 377 Rings. Uguu. ;~; In Hill Top Zone Act 1, you might've accidentally changed the colors of the seesaw; And then I can't get past Hill Top Zone Act 1, because the game freezes whenever I try to break this: Music continues playing, but everything else freezes. That's all I've found. Been playing as Tails alone, collecting no Emeralds, using Kega Fusion.
@KingofHarts & Drex This is what they looks like before the changes. Unfortunately, Mighty can't use Rays yellows due to Flamewing wanting the team to go Super. Ray can't have a dark muzzle because of the reds from what I recall; I would use Black but I think it looks kinda odd. Same goes for his blue shoes which would shares Sonic's blue and would go yellow during Super state.
@Iceguy: If the CNZ bug is being caused by what I think it is, then it is fixed along with all the others; I just have to release it, and for that, there is a few bugs I want to iron out yet. @KingofHarts, Drez, Xeric: Ignoring the "immutable" colors (2 grays, 2 shoe reds, 2 muzzle colors, white, black, transparency), there are 7 colors that can be used for characters that can potentially be used for super state. Sonic uses two entries for his blues; the lightest blue is actually a bluish gray, and not used by the super form at all (it uses white instead). That leaves 5 colors for Mighty and Ray to use as they see fit. I will probably leave Mighty's "hair" using the shoe reds and give him a unique black; this black will then flash, like it happens for Charmy, when in super state. If I make Ray flash to light yellow (instead of flashing to white), then his lightest yellow can be used for Mighty's muzzle. Mighty's darkest muzzle color can then be the same as Sonic's, and the nearby yellow will do a good job of tricking the eye and making it look yellower than it really is. So 3 entries remain; two are used up by Ray's yellows. The last entry could be used by a blue for Ray's shoes, together with the bluish gray. Putting it all together and using Mega Drive colors, this is what I came up based on Xeric's image: (direct link) Mighty's black is redder than it would actually be in-game; I made the image like this to show the image fits in 15 colors + transparency (and I probably will do something along those lines to import the art more easily). Also: the "immutable" colors can be tweaked a bit; look at how they are changed for Team Chaotix for an example. They should remain more-or-less similar to their counterparts in the Team Sonic palette.
Awesomesaucey! Keep up the good work. douob Although if you don't mind a question, do you plan on adding custom levels? I don't mean to sound demaning, I've just been wondering. owo
I'm not sure Mighty's yellow skin tone really works there - too much contrast. In fact, it reminds me of the old days of fangames where people would build stuff in 256 colours... or a NES game. I'd just stick with Sonic's skin tone.
I'm loving the color layout flamewing... but I'm gonna bitch about one more thing: Could you use a shoe stripe design like the one further above in Drex's post.. for Ray's shoes (The vertical stripe)? So it feels a little less like a recolor...
Ah. I missed that. Sorry bout that Xeric! Then my shoe request goes to you then. Regardless, props also to flamewing for figuring out how to cram the palette together.
I took out the gray in Sonic's forehead, I made the shine on Mighty's shell Sonic's flesh color, I edited Rays shoes and brightened up his arm since I kept mistaking the prominent shine on his belly as a vertical arm. I changed the lighter gray with the more blueish gray from Xeric's sprite. I don't mind the yellows on Mighty, but It wouldn't be terrible if he shared Sonic's color since it is cannon as far as SEGA's concerned.
Nice work. The gray in Sonic's forehead will remain there, however; I will use the existing art for Sonic, which has it.
