Sonic Classic Heroes

  1. I love how much detail you put into this. I was trying to use Tails to skip through Labyrinth Zone, and was swimming through the water. For some reason, Tails was getting tired much too quickly, only managing to get maybe two feet off the ground before getting worn out. Turns out, Sonic and Knuckles were trying to grab on to get a lift, and poor little Tails couldn't swim with them hanging on like that! Was that in Sonic 3 as well? I've never seen that happen before, and was laughing like mad. Well, until some enemies came along and it caused me to lose all my rings and water shield. Still, I can't believe you even thought of situations like that! I am loving this game more and more as I go through it!

    EDIT: Don't use Lightning Shields in Labyrinth Zone. They make the water no longer transparent, so I kept dying on the boss fight because I'd get hit once and never be able to see my way back up.

    It is from S3&K, but much easier to trigger since (a) you can more easily control Tails and (b) have two brain-dead sidekicks instead of one to grab onto your legs.

    I think I found what was causing the lightning shield bug. It also prevents random loss of lightning/fire shields due other players hitting water.

    Three minor spriting glitches what don't deserve their own update, probably suitable with one of the batch one's you've been putting out.
    • On Sonic's shoe, having him curl up into a ball moves a pixel on what would be his static shoes.
    • Pressing up will cause Tails' tails to reset, doing this fast enough will cause them to become static. (present in the original game, aswell)
    • Knuckles moves one pixel to the side when looking up.

    I could check to see if I still have it, but I doubt I do. I can go through and see if I can replicate it again somehow.

    Got a couple Chaos Emeralds,
    Got the final Sol Emerald.
    I wonder if # of rings plays any part, cuz I was WAY past the required number...(I surpassed 190 before getting to the final part.)

    These two are fixed.

    If you could, I'd appreciate it greatly; I am working on getting the new options screen up and running (and savegames), and I will be cutting it close to the deadline for updates. It also doesn't help that Gens/GS is having problems with dependencies in Ubuntu, and wreaks havoc on the package manager if I leave it installed...

    Which link, exactly? The one with 183 downloads (beta 5a), the one with 107 downloads (beta 5) or the one with 255 downloads (beta 4)?

    Thank you flamewing for making me waste spend my time on this master piece of a hack! I kinda regret never giving two damns about it before, because I always thought it was only "Meh, it's just the original game with 3 characters". Damn was I wrong. Rushing through the original two games with so much possibilites was amazing. You really felt like god all the time, because whenever you were just about to get hit, just switch to another character and move on. Even DEZ was incredibly easy because of that, yet very enjoyable.

    Now you need to add S3K to this game and it's basically the best thing ever. No idea how, but do it!

    Also, I've just noticed my name in the Special Thanks of the credits. I... don't recall doing practically anything for this hack, but thank you nonetheless. :)


    By the way, not sure if this has been reported yet, but the final screen, the HEROES logo in particular, looks very strange, color-wise:

    Yeah, I need to fix that palette. And FYI, some of your earlier tutorials at SSRG did me a world of good when I was starting to hack. You have been given credit for that.

    I'm not a big fan of the new Chaos Emerald special stage collisions; the first one now takes actual effort to get the emerald. Previously you could leave your character alone and you'd get into the emerald room. :v:

    Mester Keel98, that lava one in Marble was the nit-picky one I spotted a while ago. The rest of the bugs are cool finds.

    I apologize flamewing, you'll have to wait for an update on this, I've had little time to do much lately due to the recent floods here in China. I haven't been hit here in Baotou as hard as Beijing was, but it still slowed me down (don't have internet at home, you see...) I can look into this later, but you might have to leave this out of the Contest build unless you are able to replicate it. I'll investigate it more and get back to you as soon as I can.

    New revision.

    Enhancements over previous revision:
    • Start+A goes back to title screen.
    • You no longer turn into team Hyper with the all-emeralds cheat if you wait for the 100 rings to run out, then collect 50 rings and transform.
    • Sol and chaos emeralds flash at half the frequency on the results screen, with a 1-frame offset between them so they can appear simultaneously.
    • Save games.
    • New options/level select replacement.
    Enhancements over original games:
    • EHZ spiral pathway and MTZ cylinder played havoc with spawning CPU animations.
    Bugs fixed from previous revision:
    • LZ doors could prevent you from being sucked on unrelated water tunnels.
    • Improved Sonic spawning on water levels.
    • Hopefully, that lightning shield on water bug I can never reproduce.
    • Fixed starpole animation issues due to premature clearing of respawn flag then being reloaded, coupled with the S3&K object manager.
    • End-of-game Heroes emblem palette.
    • Continue screen.
    Bugs fixed from the original games:
    • Fixed a couple of pixels on Sonic's ducking sprites.
    • Fixed alignment for Knuckles looking up.
    • Cannot gain more than 99 lives and glitch the lives counter.
    Edit: uploaded a new build fixing a rendering bug in level select. If you see it, and it bothers you, re-download it.

    When I started the new revision, I wanted to experiment a bit with the new save screen system by seeing the features in there. I like the way it works, and fancy on how even the back drop can be changed, although I did find a lil' problem with the team editing system. Not sure what causes it, but only really happened with P1 Sonic along P2 Tails, and P1 Knuckles along P2 Sonic, from what I noticed.

    And, this one is not really a major problem, though from what I saw in here, Sonic's alignment when he's alone does seems a bit off here.

    And this caused me to get an Address Error once on Genesis Plus GX. I haven't been able to replicate it ever since but it did happen to me.

    Also, on teams where Sonic is the leader at the start everyone retains the speed and acceleration boost when switching characters, but when starting a game with someone else as the leader then Sonic doesn't have the extra speed and acceleration when you switch to him.

    EDIT: Okay, here's what I did to make the address error come up. I went to the save screen, cycled through the backgrounds, then I went to save slot 1 and chose to edit the team. I pressed A, then B twice and viola:

    I managed to get this to happen on Genesis Plus GX and Regen.

    The alignment and address error are both caused by the same thing, as it turns out. Here is a new build that fixes it.

    Graphical glitch ahoy. This popped up after beating Final Zone in Sonic 1 Only mode:

    Also, setting the game mode to Sonic 2 Only sets the starting zone to GHZ1 and not EHZ1, meaning you would end up going through the S1 zones when you're not supposed to.

    Just beat this today (pre-savegame revision)! This hack was a great time, nice job!


    Playing around in the Sound Test, I noticed that both Doomsday and the the S3&K Final Boss tracks are there. Where are they used in the actual hack (if they are in the first place)?

    Did a no-emeralds run on my mobile. Casino Night Zone act 1's Big Ring to get into S1 stage has a shade of blue in it.
