Someone I know has a rom he dumped himself. He's a mod on gbatemp (if that name is allowed here, I read the rules and didn't see anything about it), and he dumped and tested it on cyclods. White screens, won't boot on latest beta. Works in no$gba though apparently. An official dump will probably arrive soon.

Glad to see everything appears ship shape with this one.

Though I kinda wanted to hit the kid who made the Sonic 1 video, I hate it when people talk about Sonic 1's lack of Spin-Dash like SEGA left it out on purpose or something. I mean, come on, it's the first goddamn game in the series. I'm pretty sure there's an astounding number of people who quit Sonic 1 at the first loop because they stopped to Spin-Dash, and found out they couldn't. I seriously won a contest because of that shit, when I was seven.

"Durr the only bad thing is there's no Spin-Dash but I guess it's okay".

Gee, I'm sorry you can't go fast on your own.

5. Looking good, I can emulate all of these already but It'll be useful If I don't have my PSP on hand or something.

They did leave it out when it could have been done though, remember they purposefully put it in several other ports. But really, why do you care what he said? He said it didn't need it anyways... >_>

I don't care, wait some days, we'll have spindash, Sonic 3D Blast and probably Sonic Spinball in it with some hacking XD.

Sorry, it just struck the wrong chord after another shitty morning at work. Sonic 1 IS fine without the Spin-Dash, he's right, but I kinda feel like he realized he had said something people would rage over and was trying to save himself from tons of shitty YouTube comments. I'm well aware there have been a couple ports with the Spin-Dash implemented, but the game isn't that much different with the Spin-Dash, you can just beat it faster.

Point was, he isn't the only person who's ever brought it up. I edited my above post to try and make it a little more relevant.

How so. You can have scaling in a port, you know :x

Scaling isn't something that's limited to emulators. You can scale graphics in native games if you want >_>

Working on my art!
I bet they are emulated, but they did edits to the ROMS before hand so I bet there is a good chance that if we ripped the ROMs they'd be playable on a Genesis emulator.

I also bet they are very lazy ROM edits which means there is still probably ways to get to the 2 player options through hacking. However if they actually did a good job removing the crap these ROMs could be very useful for hacking purposes, especially Sonic 3 and Knuckles, seeing as how there is a lot of crap in that game which makes editing that ROM a bitch. Cutting 2 player out entirely would surely save space.

But no one answered my question from earlier D: Do the cheat codes work?

According to that, yes. But someone will need to ask him about the Sonic 2 options screen which has seemingly been abolished.

Speaking of Sonic 2, is it still Cl lΓMICAl Γl ANT Zone, or are the title cards okay?

13. So what is the final verdict on this? Is Sonic Classic Collection all the Sonic classic Sonic Genesis games? In other words, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic 2 & Knuckles, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles as they were in the good old 16-bit days.

I remember looking and asking this on retro, but I am not 100% sure so I want to verify the following:

Sonic 1 = Did they include the option for turning on spindash ala Sonic Jam, also it isn't like that aweful GBA port

Sonic 2 = I know they changed the option screen, but can sound test still be accessed for level select

Sonic 3 = Can you still select file slots as well as choose between Sonic, Tails, or Sonic & Tails

Sonic & Knuckles = Can you still choose between Sonic and Knuckles

Sonic 2 & Knuckles = If memory serves me correctly Knuckles is the only playable character

Sonic 3 & Knuckles = Intact, abilty to play as Sonic, Tails, Sonic & Tails, and Knuckles. I am a bit concerned with this one, since the shots for this game made it look like Knuckles was the only playable character.

Thanks again!

Oh, Almost forgot to ask how is the music and sound?

I know, but if they were working on ports we wouldn't NEED scaling =P!

They would probably work on a camera behavior like Sonic CD, which would use the screen space more smartly =P.

Just played through a bit of Sonic 1, 2, and 3+K. Initial impressions:

1. Framerate is distracting. It's choppy and annoying 75% of the time for all the games it seems, though Sonic 2 seems to be the most minor offender here. This is a big deal. It makes me wish I bought that damn return policy.

2. Graphical glitches in the special stages.

3. Spin Dash sound effect for Sonic 2 is wrong and loud.

4. Speed up sneakers don't speed up the music so much as they heighten the pitch. (annoying)

5. No sound test menu for Sonic 2. Character selection is delegated to the title screen. (this means no level select/debug apparently, unless there's another way to do it)

6. Pressing start will not pause the game. You need to click a little icon in the corner of the touch screen to do this.

Honestly, I wish Sega didn't even bother with this one. The emulation software being used is inadequate.

No

Sonic 2 = I know they changed the option screen, but can sound test still be accessed for level select
<strike>No word on that yet, unless he said so over at GameFAQS. One of us should go ask the guy.</strike> Apparently no.

Sonic 3 = Can you still select file slots as well as choose between Sonic, Tails, or Sonic & Tails
Previews have said that the original save feature of S3 remains in tact while S1, 2 and 2K have had one built in. Presumably this means that S3 is exactly as we know it.

Sonic & Knuckles = Can you still choose between Sonic and Knuckles
Yes

Sonic 2 & Knuckles = If memory serves me correctly Knuckles is the only playable character
Yes. Play as Sonic or Tails by just playing S2

Sonic 3 & Knuckles = Intact, abilty to play as Sonic, Tails, Sonic & Tails, and Knuckles. I am a bit concerned with this one, since the shots for this game made it look like Knuckles was the only playable character.
Would be silly to assume so. Removing Tails and Sonic would be more effort than its worth (and wouldn't make sense).

Oh, Almost forgot to ask how is the music and sound?
I think there may be the occasional glitch with some sound effects, but otherwise identical to the originals.

Corneliab, could you elaborate on the SS graphic glitches? And any other point really- especially how it actually looks in motion.

I'm getting a couple tips in from other players who have bought Classic Collection that they are experiencing random crashes with the game, forcing a restart.

Hmm. :-\

More or less the same as JenesisDS.

Final result?

JenesisDS wins, Megaman Zero Collection wins, Sonic Classic Collection loses.

Does the game still look like this?

No shadows for the special stages in Sonic 2/3, an odd black bar will show up in the background for the Sonic 2 special stages when the halfpipe bends downwards, and the checkerboard floor in the Sonic 3/K special stages visually spazzes out a bit when a lot is on-screen.

How the game looks in motion varies. Sometimes it's smooth, though it's mostly choppy and sluggish. Things like waterfalls, ring loss, crumbling platforms, and the like will chug the game for a moment, though most of the slowdown and fps issues that constantly occur can probably be attributed to the in-game emulator being unable to handle a bunch of things being on screen at once.

I've only really played through Green Hill, Marble, Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin, Angel Island, and Hydrocity, so I can't comment on how other stages play just yet.

Of course, why wouldn't it be? I could honestly care less about it.

EDIT: Hydrocity is actually much smoother than Angel Island, now that I play it a little....
