    We all knew this already.

In all fairness, GBA > DS ports are fairly easy...

Sonic 1 GBA only came out in America, Sega or Europe and Japan didn't touch it, so that must say something for what they realized the moment it was shipped.

"Oops, this game is utter shit. It didn't cost us too much to make like Sonic 2006 though, so let's just pretend it never happened."

Maybe I'm giving them too much credit, but why else would they avoid a Sonic release in Europe?

I think with a game like Sonic Genesis, you're kind of screwed without a worldwide simultaneous launch. It's not the kind of game Bobby walks into the store and goes "Mommy, mommy, I want that one!" It's an old game, and it's aimed at old gamers. It's explicitly a title aimed at you and me, with the big problem being that it's a pile of shit. Retro games sell on two things: the quality of the original, and the quality of the port. Once it was out that the port was dog shit, the game was unsellable, and with the staggered release pattern most games get, Europeans would have been reading the US reviews for months before it finally got a domestic release, and since the market for the game is likely to be Internet-savvy, there's pretty much nobody to sell that shit to once it hits Europe. It makes sense to release to the US only because it's the biggest market, which means more people to sucker before your potential market reads some reviews and backs off.

So yeah, I'd definitely say they knew it was balls before release.

While I'd agree that it's not something little Billy would go apeshit over in a store, it does have a more universal appeal than "a retro game for older gamers."

I mean, you know how everyone will buy Tetris and Pac-Man over and over? Sonic 1 is the same.

Sonic Genesis sucks because it's a shitty half-assed port that makes no sense. It serves as great testimony how money-hungry Sega is when Stealth, some random guy on the internet, can do a better job at simply porting the game and then some.

  6. You've never worked game retail obviously, because you're so very, very wrong. This is exactly the crowd they're aiming at. So many times kids have picked up that game, come to the counter and said "LOOK IT'S SONIC". Each time I told the parents it was a terrible version of a wonderful game.

    Pretty much.

The game sales based on the character not the quality. Kids love Sonic, kids see a new Sonic game in the store, kids pick up Sonic game.

It's not like they read magazines and go on the internets looking up the latest news on what to buy. They go to the store and look for the latest shit.

Gamestop put up a listing for this at $29.99 with a release date of 3/2/10. The boxart they have is also different.

Of course they had to dump modern douchebag Shamwow Sonic on the cover.

EDIT: And what the fuck is wrong with the spike coming from his back? It looks like some kind of messed up shoulder or a flesh cape or something.

Why are they acting like this save anywhere thing is amazing? Couldn't you do this in mega collection?

  12. SMC Plus and Gems only. The Gamecube version had no such benefit, only the saving in S3.

  13. I think I like the US box art better. Instead of a blue tiled background with some rings, we get the all memorable green hill zone.

    Doing absolutely nothing
Man, Sonic doesn't even look like himself more and more everytime, and they couldn't have used a better BG instead of just cropping GHZ and adding a blur behind the logo? :psyduck:

Honestly I am 100 percent sick and tired of modern Sonic's design. It is just absolutely ugly.

I think that the pose is awkward but it's one of the better examples of the new style at least looking decent.

    Working on my art!
I think modern Sonic has got better over the years, it has definitely improved since the Sonic Adventure era (Christ that artwork was awful). Doesn't beat the retro Japanese Sonic art but it does beat the retro American Sonic art IMO.

There's nothing wrong with the new design. It's just the quality of the games it's featured with that makes you guys dislike it.

Sonic Jam, Sonic Mega Collection+, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis (shit or not), the Wiiware ports of the games, the XBLA ports of the games and I believe Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection all say "hi".

QFT. I don't mind Sonic's modern design at all, it actually is pretty decent and still keeps a cartoony feel to it, albeit an "edgier" kind of cartoony. And Sonic's design from Nextgen is the most bashed of all the modern designs, but I bet people wouldn't mind it if Nextgen would've been a good game instead. Sonic's modern design (and his Nextgen iteration) aren't really disproportionate, just flat-out designed differently than classic Sonic. Modern Sonic looks fine, just as Classic Sonic looks fine.
