They wouldn't have to port the Sega CD version. There was a PC port they could use.

I hope they do a load of interesting things with this rather than just re-releasing the games. Something like new modes similar to ColinC10's hacks as well as other things would be a step in the right direction.

They already tried that with Sonic Jam, with easy mode, a 'normal' difficulty and adding a spin dash to Sonic 1. 500 quatloos says they'll add a spin dash mode to Sonic 1.

Nonetheless, I would like to see some new modes added. However, with all the hacks made, especially of Sonic 1, it's hard to find something new and original to put in a game like this without radically changing the game (in our eyes, of course).

I suggested this somewhere at one point. (I'm not 100% sure if it was on Sonic Retro or TSSZ News)

It could be, especially if new features are being added. I'm not sure if the DS is powerful enough for the Retro Sonic engine though. I have been given the impression that the spec of even the iPhone is much higher than the DS. (Although I would think that if the engine was worked on enough, and possibly simplified, it would be possible)

I brought it up over at SonicEatsRings and Taxman himself posted with "Nope, sorry. This isn't me."

Thats a shame. If this is a remake made to look and act like the the original (as opposed to a source code port or emulation) then Taxman could have been its best hope. I suppose Sega may surprise us though.

This will be great for R4 and cycloDS evolution users. I always wanted to have these games properly emulated on the DS.

Yeah, if these are emulated I hope that someone can do like they did the the Smash Pack emulator on the DC.

Chances are it's built off the sonic 1 gba port. Admit it, you know its true.

Thats possible, but I'm pretty sure it was just a really well thought out marketing decision.

One day someone at sega will have a revelation

"Hang on... if we... make new games that play and feel just like these old ones... HEY BOSS I GOT THIS IDEA!"

    "Idea? Your FIRED!"

I'm sure someone brings this up every year, only to be shot and promptly replaced with someone who cares about nothing but money. And slowly we got the team that we now love to hate.

You think they'd at least want to sample the water to see if there's any money in it. In many ways, a more oldschool style game would be cheaper to make because they don't have to pay a bunch of VA's to recite a shit tonne of corny dialog.

  18. I'm sure even SEGA knows how much that game sucked. They released it because there was no going back, but I seriously doubt they plan on using that crappy engine for anything else.

Here's the thing with compilations like this: there's little to no major developments costs to it other than to develop the emulation and set the game up. The actual R&D costs of the individual games has already been sunk, saving Sega a ton of dough. As mentioned prior, these games are a cash cow. People buy them up and Sega reaps the profits.

Sure, there are costs involved, but they shouldn't be as extreme as those for an original game, such as Chronicles. From a business stand-point, people are buying these compilations, so they are a very lucrative development.

Besides, this isn't even for the GBA. Nor would it necessarily make sense for Sonic 1, 2, and 3 to all control the same way.
