Sonic CD (2011 / Remaster) Prototypes

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by LittlePlanetCD, Apr 18, 2025.

  1. Hey all! This is my first time making a thread here, but it's also the biggest one I've made so far:

Very recently, with the help from Obscure Gamers and their donators, around 10 early builds of Sonic CD's mobile remaster have been found and dumped from a specific lot containing SEGA Macintosh workstations.

These builds range from between June 22nd 2011 all the way to November 15th of the same year, and there's various differences found within these builds!

The builds in question can be found over in the upload provided by Obscure Gamers, here.

With help by Mephiles / Mefiresu, who is a part of the team maintaining the RSDK Decompilation projects, there's diff files containing various engine differences between all the builds here.

There's also a Twitter thread made by the Retro Engine Facts account, discussing these prototypes.

There's research into these prototypes going on, but I will update this main post with new links to documented findings when available!

Here's a couple of images from a few prototypes, in no specific order:

Collecting all Cartridge based Sonic games and their regional variations!
To compile, create a "Payload" folder, drop the main files inside, use 7zip with default settings and save as ".ipa" (.zip)

Builds will only function on 32BIT iOS devices. And to date, only been tested on iPhone 4s/iPad 2 running on 9.3.x jailbreaks.

the public release of these prototypes are wild.
still tho, it's very cool to see how development of CD 2011 came to be... even tho it's only between June and November

I have mixed feelings on this. We all shared ROMs decades ago for the sole purpose of playing games we may or may not have actually owned. I always saw an ethical line there, and it's easy to ignore it. We essentially pirated in games.

But now this hits close to home, because this is the work of fellow fans in our own neck of the woods. I don't like this. I can't explain it, but even though we turned a blind eye to all those ROMs for so many years, this feels very dirty.

"Oh, Saxman, you're being dramatic. Nobody cares. They made their money. Blah blah blah."

I've heard that kind of talk before, but it doesn't make the feeling go away.

    When
    UNITRES, Project Time, etc.
taxman got his start from reverse enginnering shiet and bein' a freak about prototypes like every1 else. he put prototype shiet in the remakes and in mania , so i dont think it rlly matters or he'd even give a shiet about shiet from over a decade ago (which. is funny. because sonic cd 2011 is now older than the classic games were when Their prototypes were first discovered. LOL !)

anyways thats all : ) logging out of sonic retros for the next five billion years cus i only give a shiet about sonic cd LOL !

The Sonic CD 510 prototype was unearthed around 2000: 7 years after the game's release. It's been 14 years since 2011.

Holy cow 2011 protos. It’s really been that long ago huh. I’m so excited to try these myself and see what others find.

  9. I see where you're going with this, but I seriously doubt people would use these builds as a way to pirate SCD. I think that just buying the official PC release has more than a few advantages over emulating the old IOS version. Hell, have you seen the current state of IOS32 emulation?

Don't Taxman and Stealth not get royalties from this anyways? They didn't make a single dime in sales with Sonic Mania or Origins (only dev milestones, that's how it is with contract work), so...

    R9 has always been real : )
Hell the graphics has been ripped years ago, but sadly the boss sprite not, only exist from the mock up that Taxman posted all those years ago

DA Garden was saying on discord that footage of this has been around for quite a while, but now we can confirm that it is actually from the game and the layout is exactly how it was from some videos posted several years ago.
Specifically that the level is just a small straight line with a checkpoint and a bottomless pit at the end.

For the record, the data.rsdk ferom the 06-22-11 proto works with the RSDK v3 decomp, though controls are a bit funky (detects inputs that the user doesn't give, forcing Sonic into a crouch with no option to stop it, trying to suss out a fix). enabling dev menu is settings.ini works for accessing the unreleased stages.
