I don't see why they haven't tried it, and it wouldn't be impossibly hard to pull off a momentum-based Sonic in 3D either. One look at Samus' morphball mode in Metroid Prime is a prime example of how it could work, even with boosting in the picture; the controls there are easier than it looks too. I always find myself saying a lot that Sonic's a walking pinball with legs, not a motorcycle. (Although he arguably has a little more traction while walking or running.) It's kind of funny how Metroid and Sonic traded physics with each other while transitioning to 3D. That said, it would be nice to see something on Sonic Rush's level, at the least. Super-tight platforming needed a little more work, but that seems to be a problem with any 2D Sonic game. (Freedom Planet wins there.) Another 2D game with detailed, smooth sprites in general would be fun. Sonic Team seriously needs to stop being a tease about other playable characters too. Whether Sonic Boom is a gloriously hilarious train wreck or not, it was nice seeing somebody other than Sonic as an option for a change. I was fine with Sonic only in Unleashed, but I was already discouragingly fatigued from the lack of options after Colors. I wouldn't want Generations so badly as I do at all if it weren't for PC mods that let you play as Blaze or Rouge. This is exactly why I want to find a copy of 06 when I get a PS3. That, and a playable Blaze in 3D. :specialed: Isn't the PS3 port more broken than the 360 version too? It's bad enough I was already vehemently embarrassed beyond belief from playing a furry parody of Five Nights at Freddy's. (Legit scarier than FNaF. 10/10 wouldn't play again.) Watching this didn't make me feel any better about it. Wtf who thought this was a good idea? Like, why? If kids were their target, they could've at least done something cool, like the DK Rap. As much as I want to hurl every time I remember singing that song as a kid, it was cheesy good and funny.
I was not a kid when the DK Rap came out. It was just as lame as the video above. In 15 years, you will see people who are kids today posting about how they should have done a cool dance video in Crash Bandicoot Xtreme, like they did in Sonic Boom.
Yeah, it was ridiculously cheesy. I'd be insane to argue otherwise, but it did have some kind of choreography to it; Sonic Boom's dance vid wasn't even trying. It would've been better if they all played instruments instead, like Sonic Advance 1 or 2's sound test, because they clearly can't dance.
Hm, a very different spin-off to a popular franchise starring a blue character that we bought into because it had former staff of a highly-regarded other developer, and it turned out really shit? Maybe Capcom had the right idea canceling that Maverick Hunter game.
Not wagging a scolding finger in anybody's face, but I saw this game being terrible coming from a mile away. It never, ever looked promising to me. I knew from the get-go that this was in the vein of projects like Sonic & The Black Knight, not that it was a sonic game worth paying attention to.
It's a shame too because Dimps made better 2D Sonic games a decade prior. Fan projects have also shown that a successful retro revival for Sonic can be done. Between Sonic Fan Remix, Sonic Time Twisted, Sonic Overture, Sonic Dynamo, Sonic Mega Drive, the LakeFeperd games and other Sonic fan games I'm missing, there's no excuse why a proper retro revival can't be done. It's all down to general apathy towards the classic Sonic games from industry professionals. Dimps circa 2010 clearly didn't care about the classic games enough to implement the gameplay mechanics that made the classic games fun. It's as if the "Sonic was never good" people were allowed to make a Sonic game.
Actually, that's an interesting thought. Seeing as how no one making it had faith in this game, would they even put in the effort to make a patch? I mean, this isn't the 360, they can release a patch without paying extravagant amounts of money, but will they even try? It seems this game is beyond saving, so I hope they don't to keep everything preserved for history. No one's going to remember the 3DS game.
Guys. Help me. I actually like Rise of Lyric so far. I've laughed at some of the corny-ass jokes and I feel a slight shred of sympathy for Spoiler Lyric after he briefly mentioned his backstory while Sonic and Tails were in the past. The platforming feels kinda buggy, there's stuff poppin' around all over the cutscenes (which are otherwise rather expressive and well done; outside of the occasional mid-level chat, of course), and the combat is mediocre at best, but something about it has hooked me. Maybe it just reminds me of earlier 3D platformers and I've got the whole nostalgia thing goin' on. It's a lot more...open than I expected to be honest. And Spoiler I enjoyed Sonic's first confrontation with Shadow. It was cheesy as shit (grrr, you're pathetic for having friends) and the time skips to the Ice Age and Prehistoric Era while the time portal was warming up were kinda funny. It was a nice touch at least. I haven't come across anything game-breaking yet, but I'm not too worried about it. You'll probably see me back here later with a mostly unwarranted angry rant about some bullshit I've encountered down the line, but for now I'm enjoying it. So far Eggman's almost as entertaining here as he is in the show. I pre-ordered at Gamestop so I got the figure. It's just a Sonic figure, with a couple accessories. Eh, nothin' special. Still a neat addition though.
I mean, I can't speak for anyone else here, but I've got absolutely no hostility to someone liking something bad (though it's probably not even fair to say that if I haven't played it). The words under my avatar should explain why. I may question it and vehemently disagree, but I can't argue that special feeling. Hell, I'm hoping to like it ironically when I get to playing it.
Sonic 4 doesn't count. That wasn't a main series console release like Heroes or Colors. It was an extremely horrid phone game made on the side begrudgingly existing on consoles only as digital downloads. And talk about a seriously horrible crushingly sad move for them to make with a game as incredibly important and delicate as SONIC. FUCKING. 4. If that isn't proof they don't give one flying shit about Sonic, and perhaps hate their fans, I don't know what is. The most depressing thing about it I'd say is how neutrally it was accepted overall, and even treated as a decent continuation. "Not perfect, but okay." No, it was an abomination and couldn't have been more insulting. The place of Sonic 4 in the series are massive shoes to fill, and they not only didn't so much as try, it's almost as if they went out of their way to make it as sickeningly bad as possible. Yet even when Sega gives Sonic and all of its fans a huge middle finger and takes a massive shit on them, "it's okay". I'm sure at that point, Sega saw themselves as invincible. Now with the existence of Sonic Boom on top of all of this, I can't imagine things being any worse.
"Sonic 4 doesn't count [because I don't want it to]" Okay. At least Dimps can still make better shit than ... this. Maybe if (and when) it divebombs in price I'll look into playing it for myself, but there's no way I'm spending $50 on the game in its current state.
Eh, if Dimps continues to make games like Lost World 3DS then I doubt it. As mediocre as Sonic Boom Wii U and 3DS are, at least they don't seem to be frustratingly tedious like Lost World 3DS. It's definitely one of the worst Sonic games IMO.
I said that half jokingly, but read the rest of my post please. I'm talking about a main series console 2d platformer. I'm not talking about handheld games and phone games. We haven't had a main series console 2d platformer since... well, since Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Has it even occurred to them to actually try what worked so well to begin with? Sonic Generations was a step in the right direction. If they distilled the classic gameplay from Generations, improved the physics and mechanics so they at least resemble Advance and the legacy games, created new original levels, and made a brand new game out of it, that would be a great move for Sonic.
