Hey, so, remember how I said the games have low confidence attached to them?

Even the global brand manager, who was heading both Boom projects, realized these two games were going to be disasters. He peaced out of the company back in June, but we're only just learning about it today (officially)--one day before the games launch.

Ladies and gentlemen, we may finally see a game that is worse than Sonic 2006 on the crap scale. And for the whole brand's sake, I hope no one buys it. Especially not at $50.

There's an argument that likes to be flailed around that you're not a "True Sonic Fan" if you don't unflinchingly support the series in every way possible and love everything about it. I counter to you that a true Sonic fan would not accept seeing the brand dragged through the mud like this and would demand a more quality experience, especially for $50.

Guess we didn't stress the "ex" in "ex-Naughty Dog" part hard enough. They were ex for a reason.

Dear lord this is coming out dreadful by the looks of it, lol.

Some cutscenes are making me think the game was made in Unity dammit.

I agree, Gene. I'm getting really sick of seeing that ridiculous "not a true fan" argument being thrown around on social media and other parts of the internet in relation to people disliking this game.

It looks like Sonic 06's level of shite, I can't quite believe what I'm seeing here. I was expecting a mediocre game, not a complete mess. I'll probably approach this in the same way as I did with 06 - watch the game on Youtube and then eventually buy a cheap second-hand copy for the hilarity of it.

That might just be the heart of the problem. The developers don't take Sonic seriously, so they half-ass their Sonic games. These half-assed Sonic games come out and are met with bad reviews, so the gaming community doesn't take Sonic seriously. So because of the gaming community doesn't take Sonic seriously, the developers don't take Sonic seriously, and the vicious cycles continues.

Sonic needs to be in the hands of people who actually care about the series beyond a money-making machine. They need to have a strong enough love for the games to know what made them good in the first place. They need to care about the characters and universe enough to make something both fans and newcomers would enjoy. They need to take Sonic seriously so that others can take Sonic seriously. Sonic being a kid's franchise starring cartoon animals does not and cannot justify mediocrity regardless of what corporations in the 21st century think.

Not unless Sega releases something truly remarkable not just a string of "almost good" Sonic titles.

Regardless of their thoughts of the sonic series, this was their first game ever. If this is what they have to offer I don't see BRB having a bright future

And that cutscene, omg that cutscene. I can't wait for a lets play of this shit show.

Man, I already knew Freedom Planet was Sonic GOTY, but the competition looks to be more actively running away than bowing out :specialed:.

This is horrendous. I thought we had moved past this level of tripe, but it looks like no major studio has even the slightest clue how to handle Sonic. Even without the brand they are sullying further, the game looks awful. I have a feeling Let's Players are gonna have a field day with this game.

End of the day, no matter the metacritic, Sega will be happy if this makes back what it cost to develop.

Easy solution? No one buys it. This has the unfortunate result of giving a permanent black eye to SoA and yet another restructuring, but the only way to speak Sega talk is to choke them out from having money.

That said, I expect this game to make its money back just on brand power alone and that's extremely unfortunate.

Even if the lack of sales forces Sega to get better quality control, they still won't care enough about Sonic to make something truly great. Generations only made the cut because it was the 20th anniversary and Sega suddenly had enough emotional investment to make the most of it. But that's how every year should be when a Sonic game comes out... that is, if every year since 1991 didn't have a Sonic game. Which explains a lot actually.

Well the last aliens game was total shit and it was turned around for this one... Can the same happen here?

  13. This is rather disappointing. We've finally got an enjoyable, though not life-altering, cartoon; but a couple of awful games as part of the same universe. It's going to make it hard to tell people, "Sonic Boom is great" when I have to qualify it with "The TV show, that is; the game is shit."

"The Sonic Boom cartoon is great!" There, no confusion with the games now.

    THANK YOU.

This so hard. It's especially disheartening hearing "Sonic fans" argue against this. For some reason Sega and Sonic Team are given extremely disproportionate amounts of "benefit of the doubt" and I consider it entirely delusional to think they actually care about Sonic anymore or that they're even trying. It's abundantly clear, especially now, that they're totally lost and have no idea what to do, and they're just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks, forgetting everything that Sonic games ever were, all the aspects that made them great, and are oblivious to their incapacity to recreate the original gameplay mechanics which made the games so rich and unique to begin with along with their top notch aesthetics and presentation. Lost World was a depressing step backwards in many ways from the path Generations was headed and features some of the worst design choices imaginable for Sonic. Lost World, Sonic 4, and Sonic Boom are final ultimate proof to me that they don't give a shit about the Sonic series at all and are hopelessly clueless when it comes to handling it.

It seems there's a bit of confusion about the game's visuals for some people. Since Rocksterrock's playthrough is in co-op, everything is decreased and the shadows are totally absent outside of cutscenes, meaning it's not a good representation of how RoL looks. That said, the game isn't a whole lot better looking in single player.

I find it brilliant that even with everything more compressed and reduced than it is already, the framerate's still terrible when it's running through two displays.

See, I gave benefit of the doubt to Sonic Team for Sonic Adventure 2: they were broke, their console was basically dead. All right, swan song game. Rest easy, heroes.

I gave Heroes benefit of the doubt: new to the whole third party thing, it's hard to dev on three different consoles, especially one as weak as the PS2.

I'll even half-heartedly benefit them for Shadow, since it was clear they were gunning for the darker platformer market that Jak 2 popularized at the time. (It was still an awful idea, but the business sense was there.)

After 2006? After Riders? After the Werehog? After Sonic 1 GBA and Sonic Chronicles? After deciding, "Hey. Sonic should use a sword!"? No. No one with any dignity or integrity should give Sonic Team benefit of the doubt. With Unleashed Day being a 3D adaptation of the popular Rush style of gameplay, it was easy to see that it should be expanded going forward. And they did! Colors turned out all right. Generations was a love letter to all that was good (and awful) of the series.

Sure, give the old dog a bone or two for finally doing something right.

Lost World hits, and suddenly all that progress gets chucked out the window for something new. Seemingly, because Iizuka has the attention span of a dustmite and thinks the series should radically change gameplay styles to keep it from getting stale.

And then we get hit with Boom. And someone thinks Boom, as it is, is worthy of a full retail price release.

If you can sit here and argue with a straight face that Sega knows what they're doing with the brand and we should "cut them some slack", then it's time you really stop drinking the kool-aid and realize your mentality is the pure venom that keeps resulting in half-assed games. Because they know they can half-ass it. That, as "A TRUE SONIC FAN",you will shelve out top dollar for mediocrity at best (for all the good we give Colors and Generations, they are decent at best platformers. Welcome to lowered expectations.) That in the face of valid criticism, the TRUE SONIC FAN will think they are being bullied and call into question even those within the same fanbase.

The fact of the matter is: almost no one in the company and slowly now the general public remembers what actually made a Sonic game fun. And they won't bother to so long as they can secure just enough return money to break even.

And that isn't just remedied by saying, "Chao Gardens!"

It is sad that Sonic fans can make, and know how to make better Sonic games than Sega.

Wow so much blind hate towards SEGA for a game not even developed by them. SEGA totally asked BRB to make a shitty game cuz people will buy it regardless. Like they asked Gearbox to make Colonial Marines shitty and then sued them... oh wait.
