The real reason that it is a relief that I see is something that is common with reboots. Reboots tend to alienate the fanbase. I know that in a sense, like you said, most games since SA2 could be seen as spinoffs. But those games carry at least a little bit of the familiarity of the series with them. Whether the older series or the newer series is better than the other is irrelevant when fans are alienated too much. I've seen quite a few video game franchises fail when they attempted a reboot, even when the reboot was actually decent.

With this reboot-that-isn't-technically-a-real-reboot, there is no risk of losing that familiarity. The old series that holds all that is still there. This also will allow the new series to stand on its own a bit more. Because nobody who notices that both series are going on at the same time can blame the newer one for ruining anything except itself. This also allows for a smooth transition instead of an abrupt one if the older series were to ever be dropped in favor of the newer one.

And personally, if the new series is actually very good, I get to experience the best of both worlds.

tl;dr There is absolutely nothing to lose by doing things this way.

Nothing to lose huh? I do hope you're right about that.

Most interesting new details: there won't be Chaos Emeralds in the Sonic Boom universe and the designs of other returning characters will be revealed later.

Fixed. This is a much, much better analogy, though Battle Network/Star Force went waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy further than this thing is going when it comes to changing shit up, Battle Network even went as far as going with a completely different genre.

Doesn't surprise me, since they haven't really been a thing since Unleashed. Wonder if the wisps will show up, though, since those are basically what are replacing the emeralds, these days.

Well at least they stopped beating around the bush. It isn't like Sonic Team have made a bonus stage in the last 10 years and have Super Sonic as anything but a shitty afterthought, or worse, a shitty final fight.

I'll honestly miss them, I didn't care if they were a shitty afterthought extra or final boss fight mechanic I really did like supersonic. it was fun to blast through a stage that gave you such frustration esp. in the likes of Lost World.

  10. Have they confirmed what these other returning characters are?

I bet they just wanted to get rid of the Super Saiyan stuff that just screams Japanese. Plus I'm pretty confident no American Sonic cartoon ever used Chaos Emeralds, at least not accurately (AoSTH did but there were only 4 of them. Underground may have used them but how the hell should I know). Super Sonic has definitely not been used in any American/EU cartoon though, plus EU went with that whole crazy Super Sonic thing.

Super will still exist in the main branch though I'm sure.

What I don't understand is what are they trying to do with the tape. I get it for Knuckles, since fighters wrap their fists to cut blood circulation off so they don't feel pain when whacking things very hard (they certainly will later). As for the others, it looks incredibly odd as a, what, fashion accessory? I honestly can't wrap my head around the design intention, it's just weird looking. Like if someone wrapped toilet paper around their neck and started calling it a scarf.

It seems like they're trying to reinterpret the character's designs seem more 'worn' while retaining what made up the original design. But turning their gloves and shoelaces into copious amounts of loose tape is an awfully strange way to go about doing that.

You call it strange. They call it EXTREEEME.

No but seriously can we talk about the sports tape on the shoes? I'd almost be okay with all of these designs if it weren't for that.

"Speed is a reward for successful platforming"

Lol wut someone noticed that. But seriously I like the care that this team has.

A Sega blog post said something like that about Sonic 4 before Episode I was announced. To be fair, the person who wrote that blog post probably didn't work with Dimps on the game, but at least that person understood the principles behind speed being a reward.

I do hope that the western devs behind Sonic Boom might also understand this.

To be honest that could mean anything. Speed was "a reward for successful platforming" in Lost World, but it was tedious and hardly momentum-based.

Even if they do, they're seemingly not going for the same kind of gameplay. So it may not actually apply to this game.
