That didn't look bad, actually. The whole Wasteland thing is iffy, though. I hope not every single episode is set in the desert, it'd be Transformers Prime 2.0. Now, it also tells us that the strange grapple beam type thing in the game is actually a gadget created by Tails. Well, I like the idea that he's actually creating relevant and helpful items other than just upgrading the Tornado.

It all just seems dumb, and no, I don't see much of a departure from Colors and the like. That claw-burn-whatever bot "joke" was so trite I don't even know what to say.

Man, what am I doing. I'm arguing about a stupid kid's show. This ain't gonna be the next Courage or Rocko, why am I bothering.

Well, except for Knuckles, I think it's better than the Sonic Adventure redesign.

As long as the games are fun, I really don't care. My caring has been wiped from this franchise. I just want to play fun Sonic games.

Nothing that concerns this place in the least.
That TV trailer... I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like they're trying way too hard to be funny, and failing miserably. As for the game... I'm glad to see that they've finally made other characters playable for a change, which hasn't happened in seven years (minus Sonic & the Black Knight), but at the same time, I still have mixed feelings about it. I know I'm probably echoing what many people have said already, but those designs are just outright terrible, especially Knuckles'.

Based on those comments, it sounds like everyone going into this project went in with great intentions and a lot of passion for what they were trying to do. Sometimes, that's all that matters.

The team is run by guys passionate about platformers, and in fact were inspired by Sonic in terms of the ones that worked on Crash. I'm finding it hard to think another Western Dev could be a better choice.

I've been saying for a long time that I want to see a Western studio get their mitts on Sonic, and so far I'm pretty pleased with the result. The character designs aren't the best, but as an aside to the main series I can't find myself complaining. All that worries me is the gameplay. The trailer looked fantastic, but there was a curious lack of springs, monitors, loops and all the rest that resonates with the idea of a Sonic game. Plus combat apparently plays a big part. I wonder if this might edge too much toward generic platform and not enough towards Sonic. But still, I can't believe I'm saying that I like what I see. Even the TV show!

I'd be fine with the cartoony plots... if only I could find the appeal to those designs.

If this flops, their Marketing guys will probably say that what Sonic needs is a more mature approach, and hilarity will ensue once again. :v:

I was getting some serious Crash of the Titans vibes from that trailer. In fact, all of this. This entire series looks like a Crash of the Titans esq reboot. Luckily it looks better executed and the main series is still intact, but still.

For more clarification that this is truly a spin off and not a replacement, the TV show and game are not being released in Japan. This is purely an effort to revitalize the Sonic brand in the west. I must say, I hate the art style with a passion but at least the people behind it seem to have heart for the project. I'd prefer they just slightly buff up modern Knuckles, give modern Sonic a scarf, and change Eggman's outfit though. I'm fine with Amy and Tails though.

I was fully prepared to hate this whole Sonic Boom thing when it was revealed, but the only thing I don't like is the Knuckles redesign. Even that I don't hate as much as I could.

The TV show, based on the trailer, seems to be going for the kind of lighthearted action that suits Sonic best. None of the melodrama or trying too hard to be cool that has plagued so many of the games. The game looks good, although the trailer is too brief to say much about.

As for the redesigns themselves, Sonic's growing on me, and I actually really like Tails and Amy. Amy in particular has always been too cutesy and kiddy since SA1, so I like this look a lot more.

I'm of two minds about this.

The writing in the cartoon clip is quite good, and the concepts for episodes sound... really dumb, but in an amusing way, if executed correctly.

The pedigree of the developers behind the games isn't too shabby, either; they've produced some great games for Sony, after all. Getting a PS2-era platformer vibe, which could be a good thing.

On the other hand, the character designs. At the risk of sounding like one of those green eye-obsessed zealots, I just cannot get over Sonic's blue arms. I've been trained for years to spot this as an error in fan art or comic strips. Yet, here it is, baked directly into his design. I don't like it. I'm not sure I'll ever like it; makes his arms blend in too well with his body, personally. Having an extraordinarily lanky body isn't really doing it for me, either; that shot of him running from the back just looks absurd. Looks okay from the front in that promotional art, at least.

That said, beyond that and the comedic overuse of sports tape... I actually don't mind them that much. Tails and Amy look great. Knuckles looks like they took his head and threw it onto a hulked out body, which doesn't exactly look right, but I'm not as torn up about that as most. It's mostly Sonic's design I'm annoyed with.

I'm with you on the arm thing. Like, what was their logic behind that? I guess Shadow and Silver are hedgehogs that don't have peach arms, but they also have more hair so it doesn't quite work the same. Plus Amy still has peach arms, so what gives.

Also dare I say I actually prefer the japanese esq CG renders of Tails and Amy to their current counterparts. And despite Knuckles' buffness, they could have easily gone with Shadow or Silver instead. I'm so glad Knuckles has replaced Shadow in the main 4 Sonic character grouping again.

DID SOMEONE SAID OVER DESIGNED MODELS?!

    THATS IT SONIC IS DEAD!!!

    ...

In all seriousness while the design is indeed odd, it looks like an interesting game. We gotta see what happens.

Can Sonic even be revived in Japan? I thought it was well and truly dead in Japan. Might as well try to increase the appeal in countries that are actually receptive to the characters.

I think the blue arm thing was to make sure you could really tell the difference between Boom's Sonic and Sega's Sonic. As if the rougher spikes and bandages everywhere didn't already give the hint, but I guess Sega really wanted to make you know the difference.

But yeah Boom as a show looks like it's gonna be really entertaining and funny, but the art style really doesn't feel "Sonic". It doesn't help that the Boom game seems to share no game mechanics with the traditional Sonic game (no springs, slopes, monitors, dash pads, etc), which feels very alien when looking at it. It's made by ex-Naughty Dog members, and considering how "generic PS2 beat-em-up/platformer" it looks it really shows. Another thing that feels weird about it is that the game doesn't have a single tinge of 'Japanese' feel to it, which Sonic games tend to have even when directed towards a western audience.

But yeah, this leaves me very on the fence. I just hope this helps Sega make better main series games since the "Boom" series would be catering to the young children demographic they've seemed so desperate to aim to on and off for a long time. The next ST game better come soon too. Spending this entire year with this really uncomfortable "alternate universe Sonic" thing would be just plain weird.
