Sonic and the Secret Extended Edition

  1. Sephiroth, I'm just going to tell you before anyone attacks you, but you can't merely import the HD sprites into a genesis ROM, there are too many problems with resolution, pallette limitations, and other stuff.

    I am sure he meant something along the lines of the HD sprites, something more defined and less pixelized.

    Call me crazy, but I like the blockier version better. It makes it seem like there's sprite scaling involved, which would be quite the technological feat to show off even if it's faked. =P

    Well, I would be happy to see how this is pulled off. Does he instantly grow? Does he flash and *boom* he is big. Or does he increase in size slowly (like in chaotix)?

    Anyway, another big (no pun intended) update: First off, thanks to Puto, you now hear the New Super Mario Bros. Starman theme when you're big, and all problems with glitchy tiles and lag while big have been fixed. Woot. As for stuff I did myself, Big Sonic is now invincible to all enemies (but not projectiles, spikes, lava or anything else that hurts you all the time), and can smash through spikes by running into them from the side. Also, whenever Big Sonic kills an enemy or smashes spikes, the object flies off the screen like a breakable wall. The effect looks pretty awesome IMO.

    The spindashing-at-start-of-act bug has been fixed, too.

    Stuff left to do before the next release:
    * Fix all the non-GHZ zones so that their backgrounds aren't messed up and you can actually get further than the end of act 1.
    * Fix the bosses.
    * Fix Big Sonic's waiting and miscellaneous other broken animations.
    * Force reverting to Normal Sonic when you're about to go down a tube.
    * Fix various objects' collision code (notably GHZ rotating spikes on a pole and MZ lava, because they don't hurt you at all right now).
    * Make the GHZ rocks and SYZ searchlights breakable by Big Sonic.
    * Make Big Sonic break breakable walls without having to roll/fire shield dash.
    * Either fix the camera to work with levels > $08 chunks tall or redesign the levels so they aren't that tall.
    * Fix SLZ to make it not load garbage all over the screen after you walk a few screens right.
    * Fix SLZ so that you can actually get through the zone without getting stuck near the end.

    I would make one, but almost all of the bugs in my previous post would make it really crappy, so it'd be easier to just wait for the release =P

    SATSEE is now officially cancelled.

    Yeah, that makes 3 major cancelled hacks in a week. If it wasn't for S-Factor this place would be practically dead D:

    Anyway, I'm releasing the latest ROM so you can see how fucking buggy it is. THIS is why I am giving up on this hack.

    GHZ freezes at the boss.
    LZ freezes at the title card.
    MZ has a fucked up background.
    SLZ freezes when you walk about 3 chunks right.
    SYZ has a fucked up background.
    SBZ freezes when you touch a caterkiller.
    overworld has a fucked up background.
    Endsign art is fucked.
    Swinging platforms are fucked.
    ELRS is fucked.
    Knuckles is fucked.
    Tails and Blaze don't even exist so they freeze the game at the overworld.
    So much is wrong with this hack now it would probably be easier to implement all the features I ever planned for SATSEE in a clean disasm than it would be to try and fix the current version.

    I have 6 backups which I could go back to, but I really can't be bothered any more.

    Well, that sucks.

    I don't get it, though—why not just redo everything in a clean disassembly? It would certainly help organization, so it's easier to track down and fix the errors you've pointed out.

    Firstly because I feel I've done so much work on this I'd just be wasting my time to start from scratch.

    Secondly because I've been doing some coding for the S-Factor over the last three days and I always find that doing something for someone else makes me do it properly and completely, the absolute opposite of what has been happening with SATSEE. If Aquaslash can find any more ASM he wants done, I'd be more than happy to do that.

    Thirdly because I have over 9000 other projects and the reason I go on hiatus from one project for 3+ months is to work on all my others. Someone more devoted can hack Sonic. I have other things to do.

    Don't forget how you can't even access GHZ, MZ, and SBZ, from the overworld with Sonic. And what do you mean Tails/Blaze freeze the game? The game just displays Sonic with a different icon.

    What do you mean 3 cancelled? There's only this and Megamix IIRC.

    ...fuck, please don't tell me S1EE or S2AE got cancelled without me knowing.

    We still have S1EE (I think) and we can look forward to Atomic 2.

    And don't forget Dustin's Wyatt's Epic Adventure Oh wait I cancelled that and am totally not starting work on it again right now

    But there's a stupid bug which makes it sometimes go into the wrong zone, and another stupid bug which makes the elevator make you fall in a pit sometimes.

    Meh, maybe I fixed that then. I don't remember, I haven't even TRIED to play them for ages.

    The other one hasn't actually been officially cancelled yet, so I'm not sure if I should be posting its title in a public forum, but I can't see it not being dropped.

    And no it's not S1EE or S2AE.

    When was that last updated again?

    Yeah, I decided to un-cancel this hack.

    The latest source was absolutely useless, so I reverted to the last backup I had before that, which has slightly fewer bugs in it. Then I told myself I'd go through the bugs one by one and fix them.

    So far, I've fixed the score tally, finally added the correct character-aware signpost (Tails gives you a Blue Tails and Blaze gives you a Robotnik, but that's just art to fix, and those characters both appear as Sonic so far anyway) and fixed the crash that occurs at the beginning of the GHZ boss. Unfortunately, in doing so, I've discovered that Eggman can't be hit for some reason, the autoscroll doesn't work any more and the game crashes slightly later on when you jump on to the second floating platform, but it's an improvement.

    LZ redscreens as soon as you start it up, MZ, SYZ and SBZ redscreen after you move a little distance, and SLZ just goes bananas (half the pixels on the screen turn white) and lures you into a bottomless pit a bit later. I believe all of these bugs, apart from the SLZ one, are due to my converting the game to use the S3&K-style SST, and to fix them each object will have to be looked at and fixed individually. There are also a lot of objects with broken tiles, collision or both, which are due to other major changes I made to the SST, and again need to be fixed on a case by case basis (but these are slightly less important, as it doesn't crash the game).

    All backgrounds apart from GHZ's are fucked because I renovated the background code. I know exactly how to restore them, but it's a bit of a tedious process, so that can wait until the crashes are gone.

    TL;DR: SATSEE is back, and you'll hopefully have a nice playable build again once I fix all those broken objects.
