I don't have time to read all of the posts, so I will just make mine.

I bought the PS3 version the other day, and tested a few things. The physics are not very good. I wall-walked a couple times indeed. The spindash/roll sound effects are still reversed, and the level design pushes you forward at times. Too many speed boosters litter the stages, but those obviously hide the engine flaws. In Splash Hill, I notice more than a few tiling problems. There were times in the level I played where I couldn't see where I would land after a high jump and get hit by a badnik. I entered the first special stage and lost because the controls made me mess around for too long. I'm not going to like those. Anyway, this game is fun in ways I suppose, I still need to play more of it, but I don't believe it was worth $15.

NOTE: PS3 version has custom soundtrack support enabled, and the initial game loading screen is the same from that of SOnic Unleashed PS3, with small Sonic 1 sprites animating in the bottom right corner of the screen.

I see so many people buying the game before trying it out, you are still giving sega money for a poor job :/

I been playing the trial for a bit this morning, I won't post what I've said elsewhere because I'd get banned for it here :P but it's not positive, I dislike the direction sonic 4 has gone and well I'm not remotely interested in the title any more, or any other 2d effort they give us, they blew their last chance with me.

    FFFFFFFFFFFFF-

FUCK THE SEVENTH SPECIAL STAGE! Other than that I'm enjoying the game so far (I've completed up to Lost Labyrinth Act 1 because I'm trying to get this last emerald.

  4. Just downloaded the game. Gotta say it's pretty shit, really. The physics are WAYYYY wrong. I feel like I'm playing some cheap rip-off.

There are too many bottomless pits, I am yet to be killed by an badnik. The music is synth overload. The homing attack is jerky and was made for widescreen TVs (the target appears off screen on 3:4 and gets quite confusing). The special stages are odd and quite hard to get around, but are challenging which is good I guess.

Other than that, the game isn't all to bad. Haven't beaten Lost Labyrinth Act 3 yet (I had to turn the Xbox off), I will most likely report again once I have completed the game.

    Got the XBLA Version, enjoying it thus far. I've decided to take a break to calm my nerves, as I'm like a little kid all over again O_O;

Up to the Lost Labyrinth Boss now, with 3 Emeralds.

I'm enjoying the game very much, highlight of the game so far has to be Casino Street Act 2, not for the 1-up whoring, just as an all-round level. It feels 'right' IMO.

So yeah, classic Sonic it ain't, but a damn fine platformer it is. I look forward to clearing the game, and unlocking all the extras.

Wow so many people had trouble with Special Stage 7. I thought 3 was much worse

Stage 3 is only a bitch due to the bumpers at the end, that throw you into the '!' spheres. Took me 3 attempts.

Right here's the midi for the main zones so all you remixers can get working.

Sonic 4 SHZ, CSZ, LLZ, MGZ, ECZ

There were a few anomalies with some midi note lengths but all seem to have gone in correctly.

Also for the one's who don't know. The music for Casino Street Zone act 2 for the Wii version is different from the other releases. The original version isn't hidden in the Wii's midi collection. So I guess that one is gonna have to be done manually.

So due to a lack of any system on which I could play this game, I opted to emulate the Wii version. It ran very slow, but it was playable enough.

I just finished the game and it was a pretty fair amount of fun. I wouldn't play it more than once, though, and while the physics are easy to grin and bear with since I've S ranked a majority of Sonic Rush, they don't lend themselves to the classic Sonic formula—or any of its array of borrowed gimmicks—very well at all. The music also left a lot to be desired, in both its streamed and sampled incarnations. I also felt some parts of the level design were very forced—excessive reuse of the same level patterns, an obscene number of Bubbles-based homing attack chains, overuse of speed boosters and diagonal spring chains in the same exact way... it got boring very fast. And don't even get me started on how fucking dumb the special stages are. I nearly busted an artery trying to tolerate the sheer stupidity of them before just completing the game without them.

My final verdict? It's a reasonably fun game in its own right despite its own issues, but as a sequel I'm pretty disgusted by how underwhelming and unoriginal its content is. Better handling, a different name and level art that didn't blatantly rip off Sonic 2 and this could have been a great way to bring Sonic into the new decade. The episodic release format also makes it painfully short and doesn't leave it a lot of replay value. If anything's going to redeem it, it's gonna be subsequent episodes... but given trends, that may be a whole new challenge in and of itself. I'm just hoping for more original concepts and reasonable execution of those concepts, honestly; the torch and card gimmicks are good examples of how you can insert original elements that don't feel out of place.

All in all, my opinion hasn't changed all that much, if at all, about this game. At least now none of you can say I never played it. =P

...I JUST FOUND THE CHEAPEST THING EVER.

RIGHT before you lose a Special Stage, (like RIGHT before time runs out or RIGHT before you hit a "!" block) pause and click restart and you start the Special Stage over from the beginning without even needing to go into another Special Ring.

    Seriously SEGA? XDD

So, just to confirm. The Wii version has differently styled music?

Edit; I was already aware of being able to restart special stages. Was anyone else?

Got the XBLA version. I love so far everything, expect the sudden stopping and Sonic starting a bit slow. But everything else so far I like. I love that they used the Sonic 3 clear act and life music.

A bit, yes. To fit within the 50MB WiiWare limit, the music in the Wii version is actually in some kind of tracker/module/synthesized/whathaveyou format, which is why people are able to get MIDI versions so quickly (found earlier in the topic). The PS3/360 versions have just recorded music.

You wouldn't believe how many times I replayed Lost Labyrinth Zone Act 1 trying to get the last emerald. Now I hear I didn't have to.

I love that not many people have this game yet. That means I can time trial and actually be high on the leaderboards, if only for a while. Currently I'm in first in LLZ Act 3 with a time of 2:00:18 as Super Sonic. The next closest time is 2:23:84 as Super Sonic =P

I know in due time my times will be raped like no other, but I'll enjoy it while I can

Oh and I forgot to mention, I love the game over music. Sonic 3 game over music for the win :D

But as far as this game is concerned I do love it, I just wish it was more of a progression of the series rather than nostalgia rehash. Perhaps that will be what Episode 2 does. It makes sense that Episode 1 is the way it is though, because many people playing this game aren't like us and haven't played Sonic 3 and Knuckles day in and day out since it's release

OK I just got the seventh Chaos emerald on my third try? What are you guys talking about, this was my first time doing special stages and these were nothing compared to Advance 3's special stages. Got Super Sonic now, so happy.

Eventually I will do it. But I'm having a bit of a break before I finish the rest.
