What magic Saturn controller lets you play on other systems? Was it a personal mod or something you can get at an import shop?

USB Saturn controllers work with PS3s and maybe the Xbox (I'm not sure, though).

  6. Well, I just got done playing some Sonic 4...

And I've got to say, my biggest complaint is how short it is.

    PS3 only

it's the best, most undocumented feature of the PS3 - any HID controller (read, pretty much any standard USB controller) will work with the system. The Xbox 360 only accepts their proprietary XID controller.

Out of curiosity, where did you get yours? I'm tracking one on ebay, but I'm a bit paranoid about its quality (and international shipping).

I'd think that, but didn't the PS3 3.50 update kill unlicensed 3rd Party USB support?

Ebay. Be warned though, they shot up in popularity recently and now there are bunch of knockoffs. Look for the one made by SLS - those are authentic sega controllers (SLS is sega's hardware manufacturing division).

That's for very specific controllers. I'm on 3.50 and my saturn pad still works.

So I beat Sonic 4 on the Wii. Despite the familiar tropes, it did feel like a new experience.
The homing attack was lolworthy; it ain't worth shit if you aren't homing into anything.
I think that as long as Sonic isn't running off of anything, the physics are pretty solid. But like, spindashing off a cliff or up a ramp doesn't feel familiar at all. In the former, Sonic will literally come to a halt once there's no ground below his feet, and in the latter, he flies.

Overall, I found it better than Sonic 1 and Sonic CD, but not better than Sonic 2 or 3K.

And I clocked it. It definitely took me 1 hour and 37 minutes to beat it after having collected 4 emeralds.

Something weird I noticed was that if you didn't beat the game and you go back to a previous stage, pressing A (or the button to immediately take you to the next act) will send you to the act after the last one you beat.

Also, I find it easier to beat the special stages holding the controller upside down. (without motion)

My God. For some reason the sheer psychological effect of going from the jaggy/blurry Wii version to the stunning HD awesome that is the PS3 version is making this game feel so much more fun.

Now I get it. SEGA, you crafty bastards. Release the worst versions first so impatient fuckwads like me buy it, and then make the HD versions look twelve times as good by comparison. You crafty, crafty bastards. :argh:

I gave in last night and got the Wii version, even though I'm definitely getting the 360 version regardless. It's not bad, I like it. The only things that really bother me are the spindash noise, and the fact that your momentum stops, which is especially infuriating in the air.

Finished all the stages, got one last emerald left. I decided to hold off until beating the game to get the emeralds, and got them in reverse, ie, starting at Mad Gear and working backwards, so when I get to what I imagine would be the hardest special stage, I can get it in Splash Hill Act 1. Makes it easier to get back to if I lose.

Oh, and the PS3 version has the orchestral masterpiece synth. On the minus side, Splash Hill sounds worse, and I was rather fond of the cheap MIDI-sounding stage clear/1-up jingles. On the other hand... Mad Gear is awesome again.

    Working on my art!
This game was awesome :D I just beat it, I still need emeralds though. It may not be perfect but it's really fun. Only two parts of the game bothered me. A light puzzle in LLZ Act 2 that took like 5 minutes to beat, and that bottomless pit at the end of CSZ Act 3. Everything else seemed find for the first playthrough.

Also bitch about the whole pressing a button to progress acts if you want but I'm glad it's in there. It's really fun to play the levels one after another ("Oh no I have to press a button to go to the next act." Seriously? That's a complaint. Also bitching about the style of the level select screen seems rather silly "I WANT MAH SONIC AND MILES ALTERNATING BACKGROUND IT LOOKS SO GOOD.")

My only complaint about the option of nonlinear progression is that it seems utterly pointless. The stages are meant to be played in linear fashion anyway, that's how the difficulty curve goes. The only advantage it presents is the ability to farm lives in a certain stage whenever the fuck, and the ability to control which stages you collect the Chaos Emeralds in, and in what order. Neither of those advantages is particularly good at adding any sort of gameplay depth.

However, it's kind of silly to complain about when you consider that the only downside to us classic-style fans is that we wind up pressing a button while our score ticks down.

I just downloaded and played the demo, and I rather like it, to be honest. I've grown quite fond of the visual style, the music isn't as bad as I remember, and I liked the level layout (note that the demo has only one act, so take this last point with a grain of salt). My only complaint is that it feels sluggish at times. It kinda threw me off my game, but I had fun regardless.
