Since it looks like it's not documented anywhere, I've checked those headers inside the Sonic 3D ROM, and got the correct music values:

I've messed with all those music tracks with header and I haven't been able to find a few of them (I guess they must be scattered through the ROM, using a different format). Those with "??" in the list seem to change nothing in the sound test, by the way.

Please, feel free to correct any mistakes I might have made.

Holy shit! The first "??" song is the sonic 3 Bonus Stage music!

All entries in that list are valid... I'm assuming you didn't make drastic enough of a change to hear audible difference. Also glad to hear you messing around with music a bit. :)

Volcano Valley Act 1 and 2 should be swapped, btw; Act 1 is 06 and Act 2 is 05. And I believe (not too sure) that 1D (listed as ??) is the game ending fanfare, which is like a remix of the main game theme, played right before the credits.

Good job, though. I'm gonna throw this list towards http://project2612.org/ for a corrected VGM set. :)

    EDIT:
Which Bonus Stage? The special stage? I didn't see that one... Unless you mean that one with the glowing orbs (which I swear I did hear at one point in there...). Elaboration and list correction would be appreciated, as I can't look into it myself right now.

It's the gumball machine music. Just swap the music data with any of the others (sadly, this doesn't work with the other "??" song).

Oh, THAT one. You're sure that isn't accessable normally...?

Did you check the pointer list? It may be referenced... But I can't check. =(

I don't know where that is, but it certainly can't be accessed through the sound test. And no, it never plays during the game.

Try messing with the music playlist for levels... Try having the game play 1D or above, and see if it plays anything. Like the Sonic 1 sound test, it may cut off songs in the sound test after all normal slots are used. There at least 15 extra music slots in Sonic 3D which are replaced with a single pointer value for all of them (which may be a bogus song, AKA ?? number 2).

Wait, they can't fit "Senoue", but they can fit "Drossin" and "Okamoto"? =P

Right then, lemme grab some locs off the wiki.

    Sonic 3D:
Music Pointers (These add to $C0000): $D3233
Music Pointers (These add to $C8000): $D3245
Music Pointers (These add to $D0000): $D325D
Sound Effect Pointers (These add to $D8000): $D3297

In order by music slot ID. You remember the pointer format, yes? 16-bit little endian, bank start address is 8000. You'll also be able to see which songs are referenced.

    Just found out something:
    Code (Text):
    1. 16  Game Over
    2. 17  Congratulations
    3. 18  Level Clear
    4.     Song by J.Seno. ? Arrange by J.Seno.
These three are contained in the same music block, having just one header at the beginning (must have something to do with them being just ported over from Sonic 3). This means there could be more music tracks hidden in there, without their own headers (an easy way to find them is looking for the values '060301').

And the last one happened to be the ending song, only it's referenced from the wrong block, probably just to replace the gumball machine music without messing up the BGM order.

Those 3 are grouped because they use the universal voice bank from Sonic 3. I used that group of voices to find it in Sonic 3, after finding a match in the ROM.

I was around that area. No hidden stuff. Just "0603" will work for finding more music as well.

Meh, I had long ago actually looked into this...though not very closely.

The only thing that I had conluded from my discoveries (which was specifically finding out who did what music, really) was that since Maeda had also done the music to Space Harrier was that some of the style inconsistencies between songs done by him and Senoue (who had within the stuff each did, their own stylistic consistencies) were odd, since Space Harrier more closely resembled Senoue's songs (both used flat-fouth chords frequently) than anything in Sonic 3D by Maeda.

Such stylistic inconsistencies include Maeda's use of, in nearly every song, very similar four- or five- note arpeggios (such as in the entrance to Volcano Valley 2 or the 'ending' of Diamond Dust) which Senoue does not, as well as Senoue's use of the EXACT same (or damn close) chord progression in Green Grove and Spring Stadium.

Not entirely relevant, but perhaps worth noting.
