    Trying to be useful somehow.
The changes to flickies look stupid to me. It isn't hard to get them all, except greenie getting lost in the grass if somehow you missed her; red is a bit annoying but not difficult. Hopefully it can be disabled in the options menu.

I wonder if he can do something about purple flicky's pallete bug in Volcano Valey Zone, where it turns lava red.

  2. I like the blinking icons, but the rest of the mods don't make much sense. Flickies acting like shields is really weird, there's no in game explanation for them being able to block projectiles. Not losing flickies if you're carrying rings also makes zero sense to me. I get it that he's trying to make the game less frustrating, but it looks kinda half-assed when there are no explanations for the new rules inside the game's world.

I really like the changes made so far. When I first watched the video, I was a bit hesitant that he was going to change too much, but in the end I would prefer what is essentially a vastly different experience on the same stages. In particular, the invincible Flickies, not losing Flickies unless out of rings, higher traction, and changed Flicky behavior are all pluses to me. I'm curious to see how the higher top speed ends up feeling, it's very "Sonic" to have him be able to run off screen, but I'm not sure how well that'll translate in gameplay.

All in all though, I'm very excited, and I'm impressed with the progress he's made. I wonder how much of that was done prior to the video announcement and how much after. I suppose when you made the game, you have a pretty good idea of how to progress forward, but I didn't expect to get an update video for a least another month or two.

THAT'S what that is? Fuck I always thought it was some kinda zone exclusive lava flicky.

Bugfixes, improvements to the way Sonic controls, and reducing cheap hits are all welcome.
Reducing the difficulty by straight making Sonic and the flickies invulnerable to hits is not ok. And making badniks harmless? This reeks of an 'easy' mode.

Same here. I found out later it was just the Pink ones, but I always thought it looked cool as hell and it kind of made sense in the game's lore to have native Flickies around the Volcano area. It would have been great to see more regional variations of the Flicky colors in other Zones as well. Snow-Flicky in Diamond Dust Zone? You knows it.

Oh, yeah, in my house we all thought it was a 5th flicky and indeed looks really cool. But it's still a bug...

PS: 3DBlast was the first Sonic game I managed to complete, so no need to say that it's easy enough to not need more easyness. Only much time later I managed to get through Laberynt Zone 3.:dumb:

I've had a re-watch of the video today, and yeah, I feel like Jon's going a bit overkill in the 'make this shit Easy as pos' department. Regarding the Flicky problem, he's throwing quite a lot of solutions out there that go waaay beyond balancing the game.

Four seperate solutions that by themselves would have been fine and remedied the Flicky problem - Having the Flashing Icons and Ring Protection is already more than enough help without killing the challenge. Having Homing Invincible Flickies on top of that almost negates the need to even have the first two solutions, and I feel as if four seperate people all wrote a solution to one problem and Jon's using them all.

Honestly though I'm hyped. All the other changes sound great and I'm exciting to replay the game regardless. The option is still there if people want the original challenge.

Oh my god, what if Sonic could shoot homing Flickies towards the enemies? With a catapult.

    And they exploded.

I'm kind of amused at how many people are considering the elements he's changing as sacred. I'm one of those who consider 3D Blast a guilty pleasure, but it's all hampered by its very nature of being a momentum-oriented isometric platformer.

Short of re-imagining the entire concept from scratch, I feel like the overhaul to the various aspects of the Flickies benefits the product by addressing its inherent flaws. In this case it comes at the expense of challenge, but the outcome is a system that would have better functioned in the limitations of isometric platformers were the game built with those mechanics in mind.

As it stands, they're good changes to a game that just wasn't built with them in mind which make them feel unnecessary. But I genuinely do think they're welcome additions.

None of these changes break the game half as much as removing the Flickies as a mechanic entirely. //forums.sonicretro.org/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.png

Well no shit. Flickies are the name of the game. Take them out and you have Sonic: Island outside of the US :v: There's also a hack that does exactly that.

no. fuck this. permanently refusing to accept.

On a serious note, Super Sonic will probably just appear to be regular Sonic recolored like in that hack, right? Unless I missed something, the reveal vid said that new graphics aren't going to be made. I wonder how hard it would be for someone to make a good 3D-Blast-looking Super Sonic model and then make sprites off of it. Would surely take a good amount of effort, but I would love to see someone take a crack at it someday. If it's even feasible to fit those new sprites in, that is...

Didn't he mention how there will be a menu for selecting which aspects of the game you want changed? Maybe it won't be as bad as everyone thinks, you might be able to pick and choose what changes to make and adjust it so it feels the most fun yet not stupidly easy. If that's the case, I'm fully behind this director's cut, it might be fun to experiment with the settings.

I think he mentioned it would be possible to select between this version or the original, didn't see him mention any other options.

Well yes. That's why I mentioned it. For some reason I remember that getting a better reception around here than this. It has been a while. Perhaps I misremembered.

Oh, my God, you absolutely blew my mind, here. Always thought 'exclusive lava zone flicky.'

I don't know why I didn't logically think of that but, hey...first time for everything.

    By the by -

Sonic 3D is one of my favourite Sonic games, in general. I love the art, the music, and even the gameplay and controls. I'm not sure why it's so heavily criticized.

However, um, someone said here about the Saturn version running at 30FPS?

NTSC-U Saturn Model 1 owner here, can confirm there's no way this is 30FPS, it's gorgeous and is certainly, if anything, easier to control than the MD version (both of which I have).

I'd be more excited about this 'director's cut' thing if it didn't seem inclined to make it easier - I never found 3D Blast to be particularly challenging to start.

Far cooler to finally see the crab!

Slice of life visual novel, coming soon...?
A bit late to the party here, but it's amazing that the dude that worked on the original Flicky's Island is making a director's cut.

I never liked the original game, so I'm actually happy about the changes he decided to make. I'll be able to appreciate the soundtrack and the aesthetics without wanting to pull my hair off.
