So has anyone ever tried playing S3C on an Everdrive flash cart? Does it work?

Pretty sure I've run it through on there - certainly no known problems on the Mega ED which is a regular test platform now.

I'd buy a Mega EverDrive if it wasn't so bloody expensive... How can I get a brand new one cheap? I really wanna play S3C on one :(

The non-Mega will be just as good in practical terms, just a bit slower to load and missing some fancy bells and whistles (like direct USB loading, which I use a lot for testing, but isn't that relevant for a released version, particularly since you can't save that way). It's also slightly more convenient in one respect - you don't have to remember to reset before powering off to retain SRAM, which keeps tripping me up on the MED.

I'd be surprised if there's a flashcart it won't work on, frankly - anything that can run S3&K as a combined ROM should be able to run this. The only possible issue that springs to mind is missing or broken support for banked SRAM, which would also screw up S3&K (and is the reason this and other S3&K hacks have issues in the Mac ports of Genesis Plus etc. even though normal Genesis Plus and GX seem to be fine). Neither Everdrive has such an issue, and nor do the Neo Myth or MD Pro (though I did have some banking speed issues with the MD Pro early on, which I was able to work around).

5. Anyone successfully got the knuckles pink palette ips patch to work? I've tried it but knuckles is still red with green socks when I start the game. this happens when I try both the online and offline method with the patching, other than that its most certainly a great update to sonic 3 as whole, awesome stuff.

Just made a customiser build like that and it seems to be working. Bear in mind it isn't a massive change anyway (the darkest super colour and the competition sprite in S3&K already used the pinker hue, along with AI Knuckles) and it doesn't turn his socks yellow, since they were clearly always designed to be green, and there wasn't much interest in a yellow sock option when I first pitched it.

7. Just tried the customiser again, and compared it to the original sonic 3 and knuckles' AI Knuckles and it does seem to be working it is actually the right shade, I think it must have the been the green socks that got me confused. thanks for letting me know, I thought the patch made also the socks also yellow.

Do you think it would be going too far to tweak the miniboss behavior in Sky Sanctuary? Its version of the Green Hill boss moves very stiffly, not the smooth swinging of the orignal.

EDIT: Also, I'm certainly in favor of there being a yellow sock option as a low priority extra. I could have sworn I already made a post expressing my approval of the idea, was it removed? If so, why? Eh, it's probably that my memory is faulty.

On the topic of Sky Sanctuary, when playing as Sonic/Tails, at the level results screen "act 1" is present, yet at the title card screen, there is none. When playing as Knuckles, the title card is the same, and there is no level result screen. So the mention of act 1 is pointless.

I believe it says Act 1 because Knuckles's version of Sky Sanctuary is considered Act 2 (even though IIRC it's not selectable in the level select menu that has you playing as Sonic and/or Tails).

I could be looking at this the wrong way or be missing something though.

I understand the inner workings of S3K and how there are two acts to SSZ, but they appear to be intentionally left unidentified, hence the title card lacking them. But at the end of act 1, the Level Cleared screen shows up, and does list the level as act 1. This is quite obviously an oversight, and, given the nature of this hack, I bring it up as point to fix. I'm not asking a question, I'm bringing up a bug in the original game that is present here too.

Sonic 2 has an option to say "SONIC GOT THROUGH ZONE" (which is never actually used, because the only levels it's set up for have no score tally). I guess they removed it when they rewrote the object for Sonic 3.

Yes and no... it uses an "act 1" level position, but so do the Lava Reef and Death Egg boss levels, which have no problem pretending to be "act 2".

The real issue is that, as MainMemory alluded to, there is no "got through zone" style code or graphics in the game. It's kind of funny that it existed in Sonic 2 where it went unused, and then disappeared in S3&K where it might've had a home, but there you go.

It would be possible to rig that up, but the thing is, I dunno, I don't have a good idea of a result I'd be happy with. The most obvious thing is just to put ZONE in the GOT THROUGH font, but then that's inconsistent with the way the ACT text is done, and it'd require position offsets to look OK for that one instance; doing ZONE in the ACT text without a big number might end up looking worse. Never mind the fact that "SONIC GOT THROUGH ZONE" is a bit Engrishy, but if you start throwing definite articles around, it probably ends up being too wordy.

So I don't know - just like the Easy Mode acts, you get through "act 1" because it's not completely wrong and it's less painful than any alternative I can think of. If someone hadn't got nostalgic for Hidden Palace and we'd kept the Sky Sanctuary 1 label on that, as in 0408, all our troubles would melt away, but here we are.

I don't entirely agree, it sounds more abbreviated and punctual than Engrishy to me. I don't think that it'd be terribly out of place to just use the normal font, and forego styling it after the act text.

ICEKnight's suggestion to do something like "SONIC GOT THROUGH SKY SANCTUARY" could certainly work, too. In fact, that sounds better than saying Zone.

For what is worth, I had added this feature to my hack (in a still private beta) using "SONIC GOT THROUGH ZONE" -- see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTbSw1DhMsI as an example -- taking into account the fact that the "Engrishness" would actually fit those early games. You can use that video to decide if you want something similar or not.

You know, I have seen that, and I forgot all about it. I actually like that more than I thought I would, so I'll certainly be considering it. Thanks. :)

While Sonic 3D's implementation looks good in context, I think it's flattered by the "got through" text matching the title card (as in S2) and the fact that "The Final Fight" is both a special finale level and a snappy name in itself. I just don't think Sky Sanctuary is cool or relevant enough to get its name in lights at the victory screen when none of the others do, and it would create a headache in terms of doing the same thing for other zones in easy mode, which really should follow the Sky Sanctuary pattern.

Since we were talking about score tallies anyway, here's a suggestion: How about eliminating them altogether? Or otherwise implementing some faster way of getting through them? When I'm playing on an emulator, I tend to fast forward through them anyway. They tend to take quite a while, especially if you've sped through the level and gotten a huge time bonus.

I would love if there was a way to press A to skip the tally like in the newer games.

IIRC ReadySonic had an option to increase the tally speed if holding A/B/C.
