Have we decided what game we're going to build this on, yet? I can whip up a quick ROM of the relevant game with the Sonic 3D music in sound test as a decent base; alternatively, somebody could rip the Z80 driver and we could hijack it like we did with Sonic 3's. Either is a viable course of action—it's not like we need to expand the sound selection or anything.

What are the differences between the Sonic 3 Sound Driver and the Sonic 3D driver?

I think Sonic 1 will be waaay enough. This project won't require a lot of features from the other episodes anyway.

But Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 have different layout chunk sizes; 256x256 for Sonic 1 and 128x128 for Sonic 2.

They're mostly the same, the only major difference is how Sonic 3D handles the rests and the byte following them, iirc. This is why most of the Rusty Ruin ports sound broken, fyi. Puto knows more about this.

I still stand by idea of having both and an option to pick your favorite, or even a screen where you can pick and choose each track. But I do generally prefer the Saturn soundtrack. I love both, but Saturn's generally stands out more. The only exception is the final boss theme. On the Saturn, it's just a remix of the standard boss theme. The Genesis final boss theme just wins so much. <3

    :v:
If we use Sonic 2, we have Blast's special stages practically in there already.

Can't those just be ported directly?

I don't see why they couldn't. The reverse is possible, after all. I can see why Sonic 1 would be more desirable to work with, seeing as how it's easier to ASM edit.

How will special objects such as the cannon in Green Grove be handled in Sonic 1? In Sonic 3, Carnival Night already has a cannon. I'm all for Sonic 1 as long as the Sonic 3D special objects can be handled well-enough.

  13. I disagree. Maybe I'm a little biased since I've worked with S2 far more than I have with S1, but I'd say for an experienced hacker Sonic 2 should be as easy, if not easier, to ASM edit, especially since its engine is capable of more than Sonic 1's.

Another reason to build the hack off Sonic 2. But I guess it's up to whoever actually makes the hack, huh?

I fully agree. I also prefer the Saturn soundtrack a lot, even though the Mega Drive version has a couple of good songs. A lot of awful ones too, however, whereas Jacques' music is consistently excellent. And a lot more fitting regarding the pace of the game.
Also Rusty Ruin Zone's 2 BGMs and the one of the Special Stage I still think are 3 of the best Sonci songs there are.

  16. Assuming the Saturn Stages are used. Mega Genisis Stages are diffrent, I think.

Still, programming the Mega Genisis Stages would be easier with Sonic 2 (if they can't be ported directly). My vote goes to Sonic 2.

And synchronizer, I'm sure someone can program the canon. Heck, maybe could be ported from Sonic 3, if I know my stuff (which I don't).

My opinion on the Music thing: Either the option screen as stated above, or alternating music (Mega Genisis music on act one, Saturn on act 2, or if the music changes per act, which I think it does, very time you enter a Dimension Ring, the music changes. Also, each time you meet a boss, the music will be Mega Genisis the first time, Saturn the next, and so on)

Your not alone, I've prefered the Saturn track for years, I mean, Rusty Ruin and the Boss Theme really made it special for me when I was younger. The Special Stage got me in a trance though :P

    Also whut
That is horrendous: as much as I like both soundtracks, I do not want to hear them mixed with each other, ever.

Which is why I think there should be an option to pick either all Genesis tracks, all Saturn tracks, or pick and choose from each. They shouldn't be mixed together by default, that'd be terrible.

The most plausible solution to this, considering that the hack will be Genesis-based, is to use the Genesis soundtrack. The loss of quality that will result from trying to strip the music to Genesis standards may be too hard of a hit for all the effort involved. You can't please everyone, and to just port the Genesis soundtrack over would be not only easier, but prevent any quality loss in music. It's just the better choice to make.

  20. Pretty much. There is no advantage to using the Saturn songs, even if they are better (which, of course, is a matter of opinion). Alternatively, we can put an end to this fued by using no music at all. You decide. :psyduck:
