I kinda' like the grass texture but the ground is just far too repetitive for my tastes -- though given that it was a quick mockup anyway it's not overly important. Right now it looks like a slightly lamer DKC.

I just realized that with that particular style of level art, we're practically proposing Sonic Blast for the Genesis. I definitely think we should try to adopt a traditional level art style based on the isometric levels instead, for the sake of a better looking game in general. And less like Sonic Blast.

    Here's an idea.

Remember drx's port of Sonic 1 to the 32X?

Why not use that? More colors for the custom art, which allows a compromise.

It was designed for the game gear...and then horribly sloppily ported to the SMS, neither of which are good for this sort of style.

Actually replaying it even the Blue Marine Zone isn't that bad. Biggest problem in the game's mechanics is that Sonic has horrid deceleration.

But... what's so bad about a Mega Drive Sonic Blast?

Far as I'm concerned it would be pretty cool.

I've been thinking of doing that for quite some time. I'm not to sure how you would go about doing pre-rendered sprites though. D=

3D rendering is not a good idea :eng101:

It looks like a shitty game factory game

    EXACTLY.

    Because macs don't have 32X emulators. :eng101:

The game had horribly rendered poses, bad art, and extremely bad level design. Everything about it was horrible; the only redeeming aspect of the game was that it was the first 8-bit game you could play as Knuckles in, but even then he was horribly broken and jerky, like the rest of the engine.

  15. I personally thing it would be best to just use the Sonic 1/2 sprites for Sonic and things.

    Various Artwork & Music, :smug:
Idea: Why not trace some of the original S3DB art so that it fits with the old isometric style? Example (crappy and unfinished, I know):

Could still use a little more 2D-ness, but you get the idea.
EDIT: Slightly tweaked colors + background =

I think that's actually a rather good idea.
The example you've shown makes it work very well, still looks 3D but less rendered
