Tried to copy the shading style as close as possible. The shine is there, because depending the frame he's really shiny, and sometimes he has no shine at all, so I compromised and gave him a little shine.

  4. I think the pose is a little off though. His hands should be more like Sonic 1's with the :v: look.

Both of those sprites are great on their own, yes.

But I dunno, looking at them again, they feel..flat. I know, I know, it's a 2D perspective, but Blast's sprites looked more 3D than this.

Here's something to maybe go by?

(note: not saying that should look exactly like this, more so shading wise)

Or maybe I'm talking out of my ass and they'd all just look better in motion? *shrugs*

    The sprites are looking good.

Just to confirm zone bases in Sonic 2. Does everybody believe these are the most acceptable?

Green Grove- Emerald Hill. Fits perfectly methinks.
    Rusty Ruin- Aquatic Ruin.
    Spring Stadium- Casino Night
Diamond Dust- ...Dust Hill? I recall a similar ice theme there.
Volcano Valley- Hill Top without grass and a more violent background.
    Gene Gadget- Chemical Plant
    Panic Puppet- Metropolis
Final Fight- ...confused for this one. People may jump straight to Death Egg...but to be honest apart from the boss and being set in space there isn't actually a single thing with regards to the aethetics that is even vaguely similar.

sorry, 3am is too late for me

But I love that shading, I was working on an improved stance for the sprite but am I allowed to work with this?

Fine by me, I was tempted to do some more structural work with it, but I have other projects to be working on so...yeah, go right ahead.

New sprite is perfect. In all honesty I can't tell you which I prefer.

Okay you lucky lucky fellas. Its now 5am and I've decided to pull an all nighter. To distract myself from the joys of essay writing I've therefore decided to do some more boss art.

So here's Diamond Dust. As per usual- click on the image to enlarge it.

I've thought long and hard about this one. However, I firmly believe that because 2D gameplay relies on verticality this boss will have to be different in its attack pattern from the original. Basically, I think movement wise it should be identical to the Metropolis Boss (and that's to say the balls should move around Robotnik both horizontally and vertically).

The difference here is that if Sonic is hit by the ice blowers he should freeze temporarily, just as in the Ice Cap style way (and this time with no Tails to save him hehe)

Anyway, due to the time it will take for recovery there is a chance this will make the Metropolis boss much harder. This maybe a concept frightening to most of you but I personally will enjoy the challenge (I was one of those people who found Tweaker's concept of the Final Boss in Megamix absolutely thrilling)

Finally- instead of releasing Robotnik orbs...upon taking damage Robotnik should fire the snowman (see stolen Nintendo sprite) whilst one of his ice blowers smashes.

(I added the pits on either side intentionally. Again, this is optional. This is just my sick mind in operation.)

    whoa, a 2d version of 3d blast

the job sounds pretty big, but why not go bigger

2d version of sonic adventure, except minus the shitty alternative rock tracks (obviously)

Just sayin, that would be awesome.....

I can imagine SA1 and SA2 would be very interesting as 2D hacks. Alas though, I think for now 2D Blast is a much more achievable game, which finally seems to be getting off some ground. In terms of playability I also think level gimmicks would be much more fun to play over adventure because all adventure ever did was use Chaos as the main boss whilst characters would go fishing...

    ...essentially.

Bit of advise though- if you want to sneak in hack suggestions it would probably be best to go to the "game concepts" thread under the general sonic discussion board and post it there. I'm not trying to be a moderator or anything. Would just like to prevent...

...is it trolling? I am unfamiliar with most internet jargon. Although I find it ironic how this developing project was started by a hack suggestion.

If you ask Tweaker nicely maybe he would let you start a similar, community-type of board like this for Adventure. I think this one only ever really was aloud to stay though because it aroused just so many people's interests and some decent work has actually been done for it.

But back to topic- I am working with the new challenge of the Volcano Valley boss next. But believe me when I say I have an idea for both Panic Puppet and the Final Fight, and they will be immense once I crack on. 5 bosses down...3 to go...

    Okay. Here it is.

    Close-Up

Second may compress so you should be able to zoom by clicking.

However, with this boss I felt it was neccessary once more to include the broadened boundaries as with the original Volcano Valley boss it was always avery "need room to move area"

Saying that, this time around despite the fire chaser being much more difficult to avoid in 2D, I still feel that perhaps Robotnik may need a secondary defense whilst the attack occurs...in order to prevent an instant 8 hits.

So...despite the fact its not present in-game, how about for 2D Robotnik's attack has an extra defense, where-in he generate a fire shield around him (exactly like Sonic's). That way it should make the boss more interesting and challenging.

Let me know what you think.

If anything, the boss ideas are great! Allough, I don't nessacarily know about what your talking about bases for levels, you're using new art, aren't you? In theory, the first things done in this thread were the art, and you really don't want it to go to waste. Perhaps you could, you know, try your previous ones when art becomes easier to use?

I also don't know what you're getting at for the Final Fight, art edits can make a zone look brand new.

Wouldn't that make him almost impossible to hit?

Why not have it play like Spring Yard's boss (or a hell of a lot of others, for that matter), with him mainly flying just out of reach and dropping snowmen, but occasionally coming closer to the ground to try freezing Sonic?
