  1. To be honest, releasing the available assets would probably spur some other team taking on the project anew. As for the cancellation, it's really sad but I knew it was coming sooner or later the second LOst was connected to the project.

Good luck to your future endeavors guys!

In a related note, is there somewhere around or on Retro where people can release their artwork/music etc. into some kind of repository for anyone to access and use?

If not, maybe one could be set up for the S2HD assets and that could be its legacy - the start of a Retro Asset Library /wishfulthinking

    Oh.

Makes sense though, sadly. Bloody great shame.

Maybe this is, in some despondent way, what we needed - or deserved - to show that something as big as this project doesn't work behind 'closed doors'.

"Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely."

LOst kept the "power" [ie. his engine] to himself and didn't share it with the community. So what it sounds like is that it 'corrupted' him into being so paranoid in believing that someone could take away his engine (hence the DRM), that he didn't foresee the consequences of his actions which has hit the project AND the community pretty hard.

As other people have said, there are plenty of art assets stored up in the S2HD vault - old and new - that could potentially be used to pick up the pieces for next time. I mean, there's nothing stopping us, for example, from using the smooooth Sonic animations for a future game.

Finally, first it was Tweaker (for a completely different reason), and now LOst? What is it with Sonic Retro?

    Internet.
Nothing new, just people finally having consequences associated with their massive dickery instead of everyone laughing it off with a hearty 'Oh, internet!'.

    Soooo...

Gonna release those art/music assets at all? :v:

Well, someone will probably call me a massive dick for this, but I think keeping that stuff locked up is a disservice to the community that spawned the project to begin with. I'd bet my life's savings none of those assets would exist today without the massive support from the community since 2008 anyway. I'd like to see what other level art was completed. (Especially Casino Night)

Oh come on, we got one level. I seriously doubt Emerald Hill was the only finished artwork.

Edit: Oh shit, DID the team finish more than Emerald Hill?

I did enjoy the look at Sonic 2 in a HD format, but it really should have only been a look at, I don't think I always thought it would see a game hit past Casino Night, but was good to work on anything I did for the group.

The lesson to be learned here isn't that projects don't work behind closed doors (see: Megamix). The problem here was one programmer and some management fumbles.

If the message you all are getting from this project's progression and death is "Closed projects are the wrong way to go" then I don't know what to tell you except to improve your reasoning skills.

You guys do remember that people are still angry about it going closed-source in the first place, right? That's where this stuff's coming from. Closed projects aren't a bad thing, but now that the people who were keeping it closed are done with it, can it be open again? It was before and almost nobody wants to see it die.

Honestly I'd like to see the art assets, but I'd like to probably have a crack at getting my own idea back. Someone's gotta make a sonic fan game that isn't just EHZ over and over again.

In response to this, taken in conjunction with all the comments about releasing the assets - It's my understanding that few, if any, of the assets used in the recent release were made before the project went closed. Even if they were and were made available, to get a successful open project out of this, you'd still need to establish that there are people who are actually willing to do the work. No amount of getting the assets from this version, recovering assets from the Community Project version (which I'm sure is a possibility), or just plain whining about it as if this has thoroughly decimated any chance of a project like this ever happening again is going to substitute for real progress. If you can't do any of it yourself, then you'd be a lot better off asking for people who can do it to start working on new content than to jump straight to begging for assets that were already created by people who no longer want to do this, because you're going to need it anyway. If there's nothing to add to what's already there, then what's the point? Just play with the release build.

Considering I didn't get the chance to respond to this until just now, the proof is in the pudding. My life has become drastically busier recently, and that won't be slowing down anytime soon. CN already spelled most of it out in addition to what Vincent and I agreed on. That said, I'll try to answer any questions that pop up.

If your programmer wasn't a douche, do you guys think the project would've been finished someday or do you feel the issues other team members had would've caused the project to end?

  16. Hello, Canned Karma.

Here's a brief summary of most of the questions you'll get asked:

ASSETS ASSETS ASSETS ASSETS ASSETS ASSETS ASSETS?

    Thank you.

I'd just like to see what they actually did.

"playing with the release" isn't good enough when I can't even get the trees to hold still so I can observe them, let alone trying to zoom in on them. Sheesh, haven't you ever heard of learning through example? :colbert:

And by "what they actually did" I mean beyond Emerald Hill.

The Time Twisted Remake MAYBE since it's based off an old finished fangame, but sorry to say I'm keeping my guard up on everything else, well except anything that ends with After the Sequel and Classic 2 that is.

If Hill Top wasn't done why would they start making stuff for other levels?

Sonic Time Twisted is not related to Sonic Time Attacked in any way.
