Well, at least articles like this could be considered promotion for the project! >_> Sadly, I doubt the news proving there isn't a keylogger will spread as much.

Hey, look on the bright side. judging by half the comments from various articles it appears that a lot of people who didn't even know the project existed... now do.

...and they are all people who would have potentially played and liked the game, who will now never touch it :(

    lol

  4. The damage is already done I'm afraid, when most gaming websites have reported the project as a Keylogger with advice to delete it ASAP, no amount of back tracking and proof to correct the articles will help, no one is going to go back to a news article 12 or so hours AFTER it's been reported on the off chance of seeing a update. Sadly, face it, the name Sonic 2 HD has now been wrecked, it's gone from an Alpha with some bad and over protective code (thank you L0st) to now being a keylogging trap that most gaming websites were quick to point out.

Well, then, I guess this means it's time for you guys to release Chemical Plant and Aquatic Ruin Zone for the next demo! :specialed: (bricked)

But seriously, the cleaning up has begun and, while I doubt it will be as wide reaching as this news (because people love good bad stories), you guys can help along by posting in the comments or contacting site staff with updates. There will still be skepticism, but I'd use it more as motivation to prove people wrong and pump out a damn solid game.

  6. I have to say, reading comments on other websites, this made me laugh, best description of LOst so far:

I'm going to say this, and I'm only going to say it once.

F*ck you L0st. You've ruined the reputation of the community and the project with your incompetence, keylogger or not. I sincerely hope the S2HD team considers an open-ended platform in the future, as the entire DRM approach for a fangame is literally the most selfish and foolish thing I've ever seen in the fangaming scene (and I've been observing it for nearly 15 years).

Will some revised alpha be released to fix this absurd mess? It's a great project and deserves to be spread to the masses without these false positives being flagged, DRM, or whatever other idiotic crap was slipped in.

Lost fucked up. Now we're front page news on Yahoo. This may or may not have been posted already, but I'm kind of pissed and too lazy to go through the past few pages of replies. http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/fan-made-sonic-game-triggers-anti-virus-warnings-190514162.html
I normally would never do this, there's probably some rule against it, but seriously...I move to ban Lost from here forever. The harm he has caused to the amateur sonic game making/hacking community is quite possibly irreparable. He likely damaged the confidence people have in us to turn out hacks/fangames that are of solid quality(for the most part), and most importantly, not going to hurt your PC. It makes us look like we as a community don't know what the fuck we're doing. Plus, why on earth would you put DRM in a game you DON'T HAVE THE RIGHTS TO TO BEGIN WITH? He may well have opened the makers of Sonic 2 HD, maybe even the owners of Sonic Retro to legal action from pissed off users, maybe even Sega, now that they might get wind of this controversy. I would bet money Sega is in contact with ScarredSun and other admins in the coming days, even though it wasn't their fault. Seriously, Lost, just leave.

LOst has been added to my ignore list. He's lost all credibility to me. The reps of the S2HD team is ruined. Sadly, I don't know if this project will get out of the toliet it was flushed down with dissolved feces in it.

I still think you are all making this a much bigger deal than it should be.

L0st added DRM as hack protection to an early demo of a fan game that started of as a community project. That's it. No one has tried to do anything wrong here. Lost has always been protective about his work, but this does not make him a bad person.

I think the reaction here bothers me more than the DRM.

This news has made it all over the world and Yahoo News of all places. This has caused public relations nightmare with not just the team but the entire community as whole. I don't think SEGA is going to happy about this at all and may have spelled the demise of the community as whole.

To some degree, I can understand wanting to protect your work, but, I think full on DRM goes a bit far. It would be one thing if it were an original game he made with original characters, etc...if that were the case, DRM that shit all day long. But it just rubs me the wrong way, and more importantly, I fear it rubbing Sega the wrong way, DRMing something with a character who's copyright you don't own. If I make a hack(whcih I did, a few years back), I don't want folks stealing my work, and the community would come down harshly on them. But...I was using a character and engine that weren't mine, but were being modified under fair use, so I know damn good and well I have no right to say, copyright Sunset Shore zone, Space Base zone, or whatever the hell else I made. Someone else could go modify my stuff and try to make something of their own, and not credit me. Sucks ass. I'm gonna give em a ration of shit, but, again...its a risk that comes with creating content if you're unable to copyright it. I just choose to accept it. Not to mention again, the PR nightmare this is for us. Yeah, we're all reasonably computer savvy, and know what's really going on here, but a lot of folks aren't. They're going to see Sonic Retro, Sonic 2 HD, and keylogger, might fear coming on our site period, without doing their homework, and think "I'm staying the hell away from that place". Should they investigate and get the facts? Yes. Absolutely. But we have to be real here, and account for those outside of our sphere here. They're not going to. The sooner everyone accepts that, the better. Some mistakes, even if innocent, can cause huge problems, and some things just shouldn't happen to begin with. Kinda like those data breaches with credit card info. Sure, Discover, Mastercard, whatever the hell payment processing company didn't mean for their servers to get hacked. But it did. Trust was breached, and there needs to be accountability for the lapses there. That translates to here too. After your house and car, a computer is probably one of the most valuable things people possess. I sure as shit want to do right by them. I think people need to remember we have a responsibility to do right by the public. If it weren't for them giving us an audience, we wouldn't have a sonic fangaming scene to begin with.

  14. THIS. Sega has been on great terms with the community as a whole, but I think this little incident is going to cause one of the higher-ups at the company to think "Hey, this is why other companies take down these sort of things".

It's no longer about DRM, keylogging, or horrid programming. The news is out there and the damage is done. Now there is a risk that someone at Sega is going to say that people are going to (dumbly) associate "Sonic the Hedgehog" with "Keylogger".

All we can do at this point is sit back and watch the fallout. Best case scenario, the S2HD team recovers (and I hope they do), worse case would be exactly what Chibisteven said: demise of the community as most of as know it.

EDIT: Okay, after seeing Scarred Sun's post, let me clarify: Sega won't shut down the community. They would probably be a little more trigger with their C&Ds. That's all I'm saying.

Yeah, but it adds all sorts of fuel to a different fire as well, one the entire internet was trying to avoid from happening and those morons have an excuse for it all the more (you know what I'm talking about). All because of one fucking dumbass who had his head so far up his ass it's not even funny. The conquencess of his actions could reach beyond the community itself.

    Welp, this.
    OK, this is getting dumb.

We're just going to lock this and unlock it when a S2HD member speaks, or Shitfucker Jones comes back. Some of you enjoy drama a little too much.

Even if SEGA doesn't take action, some other companies could look at this bad controversy and want to avoid a similar situation from happening.

If you wrote those articles, why does it show Tristan wrote them?

    Welp, this.
A topic by "HedgehoGhetto" titled "Yo dawg, it's time for some transparency."

    Sup homies,

It's been two motherfuckin' years since I got the good word at the South Central Public Library that Sonic 2 HD was bein' made. Was checkin' out this Kotaku article my dawg Tyrell sent me and I got blown the fuck away.

    http://kotaku.com/5050852/sonic-2-hd-tech-...last-processing

Nigga, that's a nostalgia blowjob for yo ass! But I've waited two years, and NOTHIN'! No transparency, no news, no SHIT! Now, my homie KeShawn kept me good and on the straight by sending me Sonic Megamix. That shit blew our minds, yo. But this? This is too much. I'm here to demand some news. Some justice. And Imma be loud and clear with my mission! Ain't this a community project? INVOLVE THE COMMUNITY! Give us developer updates! What's this shit about an Alpha? You guys keepin' us in the DARK!

Unacceptable. I'm here to put the pressure on and to change that. I go by HedgehoGhetto but they call me Shitfucker Jones in real life. I'm here to fuck some shit up, ya dig? I'm here to keep the pressure on until the news gets out. Sound good?

Last month we proudly showed off a demo of what we've accomplished with S2HD.
Needless to say, more work has been done on the game; unfortunately, the odds of this work every seeing the light of day is slim to none. We gave the project's Lead Programmer, LOst, a week to provide us with a DRM free build of S2HD.
We've heard as much from him as you have, so it's safe to assume that's not going to happen. Given his complete lack of communication and cooperation, it falls upon to LOst to assume full responsibility for his actions as, up until the demo was released, the project's leadership was unaware of both the DRM and the now infamous DirectInput bug. This was the last straw for us. He had ignored direct requests for the past two years, effectively holding the project ransom by refusing additional help or review on his private engine. If he didn't think a piece of artwork matched his vision for the game, it was not included, or worse, was replaced by assets of his own creation. The same thing happened with the excellent multi-format sound engine our Tools Programmer Saxman created. Ultimately, LOst is no longer a part of the project.

That's the good news. The bad news for the project far outweighs it unfortunately. We cannot replace our lead programmer as LOst kept the source code for himself, making it impossible to the coded source material to be updated or used as a base for newer builds.
Additionally, two key staff members, scanline99 and Cerulean Nights (both of whom were chiefly responsible for the many animations, spritework, and overall polish seen in the demo) have resigned from the project to concentrate on independent works and careers. While we wish them the best in their endeavours, what this means to the project is that they will no longer be producing any artwork for it. Without them we are not able to guarantee the same level of quality seen in the alpha. At the moment, with ongoing careers and kids to look after, both myself and Canned Karma don't anticipate that we'll have a great deal of time to devote to S2HD either, which means we're forced to announce that

Sonic 2 HD is officially discontinued.

Certainly the DirectInput bug and the blogosphere fallout over it didn't help matters, but by the time that had taken place we had already made the decision to discontinue the project almost two months ago, well ahead of the demo's release. Internal conflicts between the project leadership and its main programmer which reached critical mass, and the only thing holding it together was the collective determination to put our frustrations aside and get a playable build into the hands of everyone who waited years for it.

Hopefully, another group in the Sonic community will pick up the torch and go forward with the vision we had over a year ago -- not just creating a Sonic 2 remake, but creating entirely original content.

Thanks to everyone who supported the project, especially to the passionate classic Sonic fanbase.
The appreciation thousands of fans expressed to S2HD as a game made "by fans for fans", represents a landmark where SEGA has to look at for a profitable use of the -highly demanded and beloved Classic franchise.
