OH MY GOD. That's great drx, thanks a million! So I was right, the lower background in Chemical Plant WAS purple! Looks like this is the Nick Arcade build, or very close to it.
This is truely truely awesome. So much better than what I was expecting! This is definitely an earlier build of our treasured Sonic 2! Simply amazing stuff. Too much to go into in one post. Oh, and pinned for obvious reasons.
You win, drx. You just win. Here are some differences I've noticed: #1- This prototype contains a working 'MotoBug' as I call it, which we've seen in magazine screenshots and the like from before Sonic 2 was released. #2- Chemical Plant Zone plays Marble Zone Music. #3- Emerald Hill Zone 1 and 2 player both play Star Light Zone music. #4- At the end of Emerald Hill Act 2, Robotnik's chopper doesn't make it's chopper-like sounds, and the Zone just ends; no cacking open of the Egg Prison or anything. #5- The Act 1 end of Zone sign is different. Image attached. Now then, this is going to sound stupid, but how do you enable the level select?
Interesting, the lava in Hill Top Zone (Accessed via the Scrap Brain Zone link) doesn't harm you if you step in it. I suppose they hadn't got around to programming that yet.
first off.. if we have the level select then what's the debug code? :P second, if you spindash into a vertical wall you bounce off with the previously unused falling back animation.. its an interesting idea but doesn't look right in use :P
You can place the Hill Top catapult in Emerald (Green) Hill Zone. This does seem very much like the Nick Arcade BETA, if it isn't, then it must be very very close. In Hidden Palace Zone, there is a badnick with glitched graphics that you can place in debug... it shots projectiles, and follows Sonic, though only up and down. In Act 2 of HPZ, there are rings in different places implying either that act 2 was supposed to have a different layout, the people doing the object layout screwed it up, or it is left over. The water level is much higher, and rises/sinks rapidly. THIS BUILD ROCKS! Now to edit a savestate so I can access the levels NOT in the level select, if any.

there are some interesting enemies in the HPZ debug... they all don't use their proper sprites.. but from how they look and act I think they might be the behaviors for the older removed enemies... are a few that are different in the act 2 debug as well... I definitely see ones that could be used for the frog or ball, as well as one for the old CNZ crab enemy version
