Yep, same story here trying to play it on my Galaxy S4. Curiously, Canabalt HD is doing somewhat the same thing, but that one boots after the second attempt each time. Sonic 2 doesn't boot up regardless.

    Trapped in my own thoughts.
Two stageplays, a screenplay, and an album
My brother has found that playing this game on an Amazon Fire TV Stick, the game crashes whenever he gets any sort of achievement.

I noticed today that S2 has been crashing on my Android tablet. I don't know how long it has been crashing (it has been some time since I last played), but S1 and SCD work perfectly. The crash happens right at the start — sometimes the screen blacks out as if it were loading, then it crashes back to home screen, and the rest of the time it crashes immediately after touching the icon. I tried completely removing and reinstalling just in case, and the same thing happens after.

For reference, mine is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, the WiFi+3G model.

It's hitting everyone! 2012 Nexus 7 here. It was doing the same thing in Bluestacks when I tried it a while back, but I didn't think anything of it then.

It also force closes for me. Interestingly, I had a back up of the app from last year. If I uninstall my existing one and the install the back up it's the same problem, so I wonder if it is something to do with Google Play.

I just looked into this real quick, and it's a fault with Google Play Services. Sonic 2 worked when I first started it up, but after logging out of Google Play Services, it crashed on the next boot. Uninstalling Google Play Services made the game run again (albeit without the online features).

I believe you are correct. The Google Play Store (and subsequently Google Play Services) have indeed been updated recently (It has a new GUI in the Google Play Store), so it does appear to be the case. I've sent another error report, detailing the issue to SEGA through the Google Play Store and we'll see what happens from there. At least we're pretty sure we know the cause, now.

Interestingly, if you leave the "Force Quit" screen alone, the "Touch to Start" music will start to play, so the game is running.

Ahh the joys of the app market. It's a constant arms race to keep your stuff working as the platform holder upgrades their stuff.

    Working on my art!
So I'm guessing that's why it's crashing on Bluestacks. It worked once, then it decided not to :/ anyone know how to disable Google Play Services on Bluestacks?

On a similar point, when I turn on Sonic CD it says it's loading a bunch of components, but I only get the sound. Clicking the screen does things, but no pictures are showing up. Anyone know a fix for that? Oddly Sonic 1 works fine though.

Almost go this all working with a Saturn Controller so I'll be able to play these games as nature almost intended.

EDIT: Never mind I figured out how to turn that off in bluestacks. Sonic CD is still acting funny though. And on a side note, anyone know how to get rid of that green circle thing that indicates you're using a controller?

  11. For the last few weeks I've been playing Sonic 2 on my Android phone (LG G2 mini D620) and it never crashed, but I tried to play it today and now it does. Same thing is happening on my Android tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 P5100). If it's a Google Play update issue, let me know when it gets fixed.

Disabling Google Play Services did indeed fix it. I had to reenable it after, however, as I have other apps that depend on it.

  13. The game crashes when the GameCircle library tries to unlock an achievement. I have the same issue on my Amazon Fire TV. Taxman is aware of the bug, see http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=31061&st=2370&p=791237&#entry791237

  14. After the Google Play Services update Sonic 2 also crashes on my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and my son's Lenco Kidztab-74. Uninstalling the update or disabling Google Play Services is a work around for the problem, but I hope Google can fix this bug real soon.

This is a small error, but I've noticed the transparency for the continue sprite isn't complete (look around the legs):

Just got an Asus Memo Pad 7 today and booting in to Sonic 2 on that goes right to a black screen. Some times I get flickers of gameplay for a frame or two, and the controls (seem to) respond, I just can't see anything past the launcher menu.

Edit: Never mind, I thought I had all the system updates, but this thing is weird. It says it's up to date, but then it starts downloading an update in the background in secret. Three firmware updates later, it works!

I recently got a mobile device, and I have to say it is beyond tempting to buy this, instead of emulating it via an emulator package not on Google Play. (I find it deplorable that Android emulator porters are charging money for tons of code they clearly didn't write themselves, I don't care if the original emus used GPL licenses.) I'm on Android 4.4, have dual 1.2Ghz CPUs, and 512MBs of RAM, would the remaster run alright on that? I'd hate to buy it and it not work, or crash if 4.4 isn't supported.

  18. Really don't see why it wouldn't, the RAM might be your only issue, but even then, should be fine.

Tried disabling Google Play Services on my Note 4 and that's a no go. Reallllly blows cause I'd like to keep playing this on a device that doesn't complete suck.

It might require outright uninstalling Google Play Services, but that's probably too inconvenient for the average user. Good news is Sega contacted me regarding this issue, and I've provided them updated builds to solve the problem, so this should hopefully be all be fine in the future.

I'll probably buy it when that update goes live, then. This remaster is a real treasure for the price tag, I can't wait to see Hidden Palace for myself. Thanks for keeping it maintained, Taxman!
