Sonic 1 GBA

    A lot of people said they were going to include them as an extra... personally, I think that's bullshit. The old sprites have a LOT more work put into them, and it shows.

    I don't know if they have more work put into them - the Advance sprites are pretty smooth. But they actually look like computer graphics instead of some shitty Pokémon animé graphics.

    The graphics are smooth because there was more room in the ROM to store graphics.

    Do you remember S2B's walking sprites at all? Those were smooth as hell -- even moreso than the advance sprites (which really looked ugly due to the horrible sprite rotation). I figured if you were to make more animations like that, the genesis sprites would completely own the Advance ones - hands down.

    Yeah, that's true. It's harder to animate the old ones because they're more detailed. It's like comparing Western cartoons to Anime.

    Except both American and Japanese animation have high attention to detail, just in different places (American putting more focus on the finer details like hair or physical proportional correctness, Japanese putting more focus on wider details like facial expression and physical correctness during conversation)

    Animé on a whole is more detailed though - generally it has more precise shading, etc., and small details like scars or muscle lines. Western cartoons may focus on simpler, more obvious details like the ones you mention, but mostly it's a lot less detailed(but smoother). It seems logical enough to me.

    I suppose whether it's "detailed" or not is completely arbitrary - some people may prefer details on some features, while others prefer details on other aspects of the animation. One really can't be defined as "better" than the other - just more appealing in the eyes of the beholder.

    So? That doesn't mean that people can't prefer the Advance sprites over the old-school ones. If it's an "extra"--as in, an option—then how can it possibly be "bullshit" if you have the option to ignore it completely?

    I think the size ratio of things might require a lot of tweaking to get Advance sprites to work correctly. However, I would totally love to see both versions in that game. It would be interesting. Actually, Advance style remixes of the original themes in "Advance Mode" would be pretty slick too.

    I looked at the sprites side by side in Pixen: they both have the same amount of detail, the same amount of shading. The difference is, there aren't as many sprites in the SA carts, meaning they look like shit in motion, and that's what matters. If they were to put a good 4 more frames per animation in the cart, they would look a bit better.

    But they're lazy.

    At least Sonic Rush had good 3D sprites.

    The Nintendo Dual Screen can not support hardware smoothing of any sort, and if someone manahed to do it by software, even with immense slowdown, they would be fackin' like a master.
