Why shouldn't it? It's actually smart enough to detect you tried to cheat, so bonus points to ColinC10 for that.

  2. But the code actually works in the end. If you pass or fail the Special Stages, it'll give you the "Sonic Got All The Chaos Emeralds" message and Super Sonic works like normal.

As for the Super Sonic sprite issue, looks like it only happens when debug mode is enabled, which oddly doesn't work either (which I assume is as intended).

I just want to say. This is the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life!

    That is all.

I'm not that interested in combining S3&K into a linear game with S1 and S2. It sounds like too much.

What would be more interesting for me is a 'best of' compilation, taking only the very best zones from 1,2,3,K, and CD if that's possible.

I have always wanted this. and the best way to do this is to setup a poll so everyone in the community can vote on their favorites. let them pick like... 10 zones, 10 bosses, etc. and the top 10 everything will be the game. :P

and a quick technical hack for this would be -- rewrite an emulator to require all the roms -- then jump between the roms to the proper levels while carrying over lives, etc. could easily jump to different special stages in all the roms too.

Now you've got me thinking: suppose you could pick the levels you want from a drop-down list? Since we all probably want different things.

I'm sure your best compilation would be different to alot of other people. I've seen a lot of woot for Ice Cap Zone in the past. Personally it's my most disliked zone from the classics. It's bland, has boring level designs and the music is toss. I even prefer Hill Top Zone over Emerald Hill Zone, which I'm sure alot of other people would disagree. I find HTZ better because there is more to it like lava, moving floors, breakable ground, underground sections and the level has a bit of challenge to it.

So in theory. A compilation of so called best zones just wouldn't go down too well with others as we all have our personal favourites.

  8. Hill top? Really? I saw that zone as nothing more than a orchestral masterpiece music, Emerald hill recolour, with broken chunks, weird object placement, dancing background, and enemy which loves to lock up the game zone.

Hence why it's pointless, to be blunt.

I think you guys just wanna argue :P the community voting would be a good ballpark for everyone's favorites. you know at LEAST some of your favorites would be in there.

Or you could include every level, that way everyone's favourites would be in there.

That's if EHZ was the first level to be designed out of the two. To use that argument. You would also acknowledge that in the 8 bit version, Sky High Zone was the original colour and Green Hills Zone was the recolour.

In all fairness, no one can claim with which one came first. We would all be just assuming.

Note that I recommended including all the levels, and then allowing people to select the ones they want to play in sequence from a drop-down list.

How about if you only use one level from a given theme.

Don't use Green Hill ,Emerald Hill, and Mushroom Hill, just one.
Don't use Spring Yard, Casino Night, and Carnival Night, just one.

See what I mean? You could make a community vote for each theme.

    Working on my art!
Or rather use one level theme, however use all the layouts. So if Carnival Night Zone was the favorite act then essentially it would have 7 acts, 3 from Spring Yard, 2 from Casino Night, and 2 from the original zone.

It would still be all the levels but maybe some space could be saved due to having less art

Er, aren't we all missing the key point: You're pitching ideas for an entirely speculative project, as if there was a developer actively soliciting them.

I think all of those posts should be split from this thread, actually.

I agree, although beyond that I think the entire bad idea should just be abandoned.

  19. Wow, why hasn't this been done before? This is a brilliant hack! No glitches, pallet errors or new levels, just Sonic 1 and 2 combined! Love it!

  20. I know I'm late to the party. :) But this is one fantastic hack. I'm up to Oil Ocean in 2. I forgot how amazingly easy some of the zones are with Super Sonic. Anyway. I've had the same slowdown issues of others, especially coming out of the special stage in Labyrinth Act 3...underwater. I'm guessing its just one of those things. Lots of objects to load as well as the underwater palette.

Overall though, just a great idea. I wish 3 could be added but I realize how much of a challenge that is.
