True, though I do hope it's looked into. Even within fan projects, the brilliant VS mode is often completely ignored and a new less limited engine is a good opportunity for expansion.

Concerning both games however, I wonder if save files will be available, or alternatively the old cheats like Level Select.

You know what could be totally amazing, yet almost no-one will get it? Hide somewhere the Sonic Retro splash screen, with that godly Space Harrier theme remix. That would be awesome.

If Sonic CD's menu is anything to go by, there will probably be a menu similar to it. Four save files (under Start Game), Achievements, Leaderboards, Help & Options and hopefully a Time Attack, although that's a bit of a stretch considering Sonic 1 and 2 didn't have that mode. I'm thinking getting all the Emeralds or something like that will unlock Stage Select and Sound Test.

You mean the splash screen that takes like ten seconds (and in one really bad case, like twenty) to get over and done with?

Yeah, hide it somewhere, and let it unlock if you do something really specific, like Sonic CD hidden pictures, make it a shout to the site who made it happen in first place. Even if the actual site name can't be included because of copyrights and shit, it would be a really good nod to the community, just the master emerald with Sonic on top and the music.

It'd be easier to sneak in a "RETRO" light sign in Spring Yard, hidden somewhere. :v:

That would be awesome too...but no godly music :( It's awesome anyways!

Yeah, I think I could cope with that!

Ha. But seriously, little Easter eggs like that would be awesome.

Sonic 2 versus mode is my favorite two player thing ever, and the potential for it to be even better in the new port has me excited.

    - No more squashed graphics
    - More than 3 zones?
    - No Slowdown

    I can't wait.

With the inclusion of the spindash in Sonic 1, can we expect Green Hill Act 1 speedruns under 10 seconds? :v:

Yeah, at first I was like "Yeah, OK, Sonic 2. Again." Then I realized this was likely and perhaps inevitable in a lot of cases.

Granted, Hill Top is going to be kinda difficult to make into a 2P level due to how the lava flows work, but I don't think EVERY level has to be a part of this. Oil Ocean, Chemical Plant, and Aquatic Ruin would improve things quite nicely on their own. (PS: Bonus points for online multiplayer)

Also would be nice to have a flying tails in 1-player to match up with Knuckles' mechanics.

This is pleasant news. If the game ever comes to consoles, will the old emulated port also be updated? If not, I'll still rebuy the game!

I won't be getting it personally due to my existing DRM stance (stop throwing those shoes at me! =P) but I'll be recommending this to those I know who bought Sonic CD 2011, which was more than a couple.

This is great news, expect me to buy at least three copies, assuming this is coming to consoles and Steam. I'm glad the soundtrack is being handled the way it is, as I love the old soundtrack, and to hear it in even better quality is an awesome thing. Having a new soundtrack would be daft if the visuals remained the same. Well done to Taxman and Stealth!

And Overlord, I will throw my shoes at you. But they're vintage Italian, so I'd like them back afterwards.

If Sonic 3 & Knuckles got the Retro Engine treatment then they should have Tiddles on board for that.

Thats nice but I hope they also do a PC/PS3/360 release. I supported Taxman's release of Sonic CD on all platforms I own(360/PS3/PC/Android) and would do it again with all Classic Sonic games.

I say the same. if this one is also released on Nintendo 3DS, I'll gladly buy it there too. It's the perfect platform for it.

This is awesome, and exactly the sort of thing a lot of us seemed to be saying should happen when Sonic CD's 2011 remake was released. = )

If they come out on a platform I can actually play them on, I'll be supporting the crap out of both of these - liking the prospect of remastered tunes and new game modes. Hopefully if these do well, a Retro-Engine powered remake of S3&K would also be considered.

Here's a good question/idea. Will this port support the iControlPad?
