Sonic 1 and 2 getting the Sonic CD treatment by Taxman and Stealth

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by TimmiT, Mar 27, 2013.

  1. I'm more on the side of having a spring down there. You get punished enough for losing all your rings, why make it a cheap death in a level which feels like it has no bottom? Especially if you're the explorative type.

It's understandable that in levels like Oil Ocean or Sky Chase zone that there are bottomless pits, due to the dangerous hazard at the bottom or even no floor at all for miles. But something like a mine/cave you'd be expecting to be able to go deeper into it.

And the special stages themselves are pretty tough, so you should be rewarded for clearing them all. You all act like the special stages are super easy when to the average player it'll take them awhile before they can get them all. Punishing a player for collecting them all and collecting 50 rings in the level without dying by keeping them trapped in a pit is not very nice at all.

On one hand, we have a spike pit that, at best, makes you wait till your damage invincibility wears off and you can die and, at worst, makes you wait a minute or more until you can die and try again. On the other hand, we have a flawed enemy placement that, at best, makes you be careful to slowdown and dodge the trajectory of it's projectiles and, at worst, makes you start the gimmick over again immediately.

To reiterate, there is a hazard that can potentially make you wait for a minute or more before you can try again, and a hazard that can potentially make you try again immediately. You would have me believe that each are as egregious examples of oversight and poor level design as the other?

I still can't tell if he was intentionally being an idiot or not. And now I can't tell if you're as bad as he is, or if you're lauding his intentional stupidity and a joke is flying way over my head.

    Guys. Seriously.

The fact that one of our own is working on this doesn't mean you have free reign to get rid of something just because you dislike it.

That spike pit has been there for almost 21 years. It's not going anywhere. Get over it.

Well, damn. I was one of the people who wanted the spike pit to at least have a way out.

Of course, it could also be changed so the bridge is on the other side... but that would make things too easy. =P

If players are given the option to enter and leave Super Sonic form by pressing a separate button (similar to Sonic 4), that could make the spikes placement much less irritating for those in Super Sonic form. I personally don't care if that gets changed at all, but I've never gotten all seven chaos emeralds legitimately and haven't fallen into that pit in...probably over a decade. I can't remember the last time I've fallen into that section.

Because Sonic 1 had no changes to the levels.

Look, I get where you're coming from, but to not correct a glaring oversight like the sit-and-wait pit would be a wasted opportunity. That's all anybody is saying, really.

  9. Plus it's just a interesting discussion to have, perhaps not fully relevant but I still found it fascinating.

And we haven't got much to talk about, seeing as this is Sonic 2 being released again (which I'm totally down for if it's got the same polish as Sonic CD and Sonic 1 got) and what we have so far are some screenshots of the game being WIP.

When stuck in the pit, you could always exit out of the game and resume from the save slot

Okay, so this is going mad off-topic and kinda dragging it longer than it has any right to, but I feel I should point this out since apparently nobody else has.

This is what the pit looks like in the final and most documented beta prototypes:

And this is what it looks like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (beta 4):

Well what the heck. So why did they change it?

    Fuck, I gotta go fast.

  12. If Greg the Cat were here you nerds would be so owned that this discussion would've been over pages ago. He wasn't the hero Retro needed, he was the hero Retro deserved.

But seriously get over it either be good at the game or stand there and wait for death's sweet embrace to take you.

The recent ports of Sonic CD and Sonic 1 have this covered already. They both have a 'Restart' button, so if you're stuck in the pit as Super Sonic with a shit load of rings, just hit that.

With how many rings do you enter the pit anyway. 270?

Eh, fixing problems in "Duct Tape" quality hardly helped anyone if the problem persists.

Look people there's nohting wrong keep the game geniune to it's roots, problems an all, or even to correct some oversights in a re-relase.
I just find it baffled there are actually people who think the pit is a good thing.
For me it's at the same level of design oversights and lazyness that, for example, avgn exploits to make "entertainment".

    I DONE MAKED GAMES.
Cherry-picking minuscule elements of these games and complaining about them is pretty pathetic.

"GREEEN EYES, THIS GAME IS RUUUUINED!"

"OH NOES, SNONIC'S EYELIDS ARE WRONG AND NOW I GO KILL MYSELF"

"I NEVER LIKED THAT ONE SPIKE PIT BECAUSE I'm A DROOLING MONKEY WHO CAN'T PLAY GAMES SO WELL, THEY SHOULD REMOVE IT BECAUSE I'm A SELF-ENTITLED CHILD"

You know, I didn't really like it either. My solution? Avoid the thing, stop stupidly jumping down there. Jeez, fuck.

Changing the subject, I think that including Hidden Palace and (maybe) Wood Zone as 2 player levels would be a nice nod to the fans and add something new without changing the core experience. It would give people a reason to play the two player mode and compensate for some levels not being suitable. If you want them in single player, whack in the level select cheat, or perhaps gain them as bonus levels in a menu after beating the game.

I wonder what music Wood Zone would have. It's a popular theory that the music used in the 2 player levels was originally going to be used for the scrapped levels. If Wood Zone uses Emerald Hill Zone's 2 player music, would that mean Emerald Hill would use its 1 player music in 2 player mode?

I suppose it would be a quick solution should they add any more levels to 2 player mode, and thus likely need to make more separate themes otherwise.

I feel that Casino Night's 2p music would suit Wood Zone, and Mystic Cave would better suit Cyber City, that would leave Emerald Hill for Dust Hill, but it's neither here nor there really.
