Hello everyone. Since August 2009 I have been working on a small hack of Sonic 1 in my spare time. It's extremely simple - just new layouts. After some real life stuff and also lacking the initial interest I had in the hack, I am going to release what I have worked on early. I did plan to get one more act in before releasing a demo/beta/whatever but I want to see if you guys think it is worth me continuing. If people show interest I may continue working on it. I just started it to kill boredom but now I don't even have the time to work on it!

Features
New layouts for Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone, and Spring Yard Zone Acts 1 and 2.
New Palletes for the modified zones.
Very minor ASM from tutorials - 'Press Start Fix', Speed Cap removed, different SEGA screen, 'Ell Presents'
Spindash NOT added. This was a conscious decision.
Spikebug NOT removed. Also a conscious decision.

In the layouts theres a few hidden goodies scattered around, so don't be afraid to explore a little. Also, 'bouncing' on badniks or other objects can sometimes save time or lead to shortcuts!

Bugs
There is an uncommon bug where objects are destroyed before you arrive, like monitors. Sometimes rings and badniks aren't there. So far this only happens in Marble Zone.

I'd be intrested to see what you guys think, so let me know! It probably isn't everyones cup of tea, but I can't please everyone  !

Ah, another palette hack... :colbert:
I closed the ROM 5 minutes after I got it opened in my emulator. Man, PLEASE change that blue from the SYZ palette. This is completely weird as it is, and doesn't fits on the brown at the background. The Marble Zone's palette looks like a negative film. You should improve your skills before post. At least this is what I think about this hack.

Believe or no, the GHZ palette is the only good one there. Except for the colors from the clouds.

It's not a pallete hack :colbert: .

The pallette for SYZ gave me a lot of problems and yeah, it certainly isn't the best. Thanks for the feedback!

I mean about the gradient for some areas. Look for GHZ's clouds and compare them with the original GHZ clouds. The gradient there is out of order, and the colors of SYZ doesn't combine with the rest of the level. But yeah, I appreciate it looking forward in the fact this is your first hack. Certainly you will improve it during the time. This is what I hope to see in the next versions from S1 Alt.

OK, I played it. I played the levels that were changed (GHZ, MZ and SYZ).

First off, the palettes, very strange and not the best fitting of all palettes, infact I wasn't pleased with the palettes, they seemed abit too strange. but before everyone decides to put this hack down and call it crap, I must say that the layouts to MZ and SYZ (Although odd in places) was actually quite fun, and in some areas clever, so heads up there =)

I would like to recommend maybe fixing the palettes to feel more pleasing or maybe attempt art editing to change the zone's appearance a bit.

Thanks! When I get some time I'l definitely change the palletes, make them more eye appealing. I am glad you enjoyed the layouts, seeing as that was my primary focus with the hack.

Ok, so I played it and I enjoyed myself while playing it.
The layouts are rather clever in places and make use of the levels gimmicks well. Apart from a few oddly placed objects in places, it seemed solid and I didn't run into any game breaking glitches, so that's always good.
The palettes are a little odd. The colours sometimes contrast with each other (For example Marble's brickwork) but I know how much of a pain it is to give old levels new palettes. Using the original shading is a good guide and then work from editing all the colours in a shading sequence to shades of another colour.
I like the Sega logo as well. If I remember correctly, it's from a guide, but then again I could never get the thing to work anyway, so I like the fact that it's there anyway.

Overall though, it's a good hack. Has a few flaws in object placement and palette, but it has potential. I'd also much rather be playing this than an asm hack with spindash, homing attack and art changes but nothing else. :v:

I'm shocked. Where are all the cheap bottomless pits? The fast sections ending directly in a wall of spikes? The poorly-fitting level chunks making it difficult to see where to go next? These are things I expected from this hack and you didn't deliver them! How am I supposed to practice my Quick Save/Quick Load skills when the levels are a sensible length with frequent checkpoints? :argh:

Seriously though, this was pretty fun, especially Marble Zone. Of course it needs a bit of polish in places, but a couple of sections were dangerously close to professional-looking. One thing I'd like to mention: in Spring Yard Zone Act 2, I hit a red spring which sent me straight into some spikes, where the spike bug finished me off. Normally I wouldn't even mention it, since it seems to be such a recurring theme in "My First Hack" levels, but I really noticed it here because it was the first time in all eight levels where I felt I died unfairly. I find that quite impressive, actually, and it's a clear indicator of good layouts.

What are you going to do with it now? Obviously correcting the horrible palettes would be a good start, but do you intend to make some art edits too? Or is it layouts all the way? I agree with D. A. Garden in that I much prefer fun and well-designed levels to fancy gimmicks, but I think with even the best layouts imaginable it might be difficult to hold people's attention with the same art, objects and music that they're used to. Either way, I'll be keeping an eye on this - thanks for posting! :)

While I share the opinions regarding the palettes, I was pleasantly surprised by the layouts—they're quite good! I love the extra focus on platforming, and you added some very creative elements into the levels given the fact that you only had all of the default chunks and objects available. I particularly like how you cut the crap with Spring Yard and made it a lot more fun to play through. Green Hill also had a ton of alternate paths and places to go that I was very pleased with. Actually, all of the levels shared this trait! I also like how you took the minimalist approach and kept most of Sonic 1 intact instead of changing everything to be more like the later games. Nice touch!

You definitely have a firm grasp on fun level design, and I'd love to see this hack completed. Keep up the great work! :)

Thanks guys :)

The pallete issues will be resolved, as I have decided to keep going with this following the comments made. As for other edits, I think I'l complete the layouts first, and then concentrate on the fields I do not feel so confident in. Art edits would be first on that list though, As I have had ideas for new backgrounds and such but kept it away until I felt the layouts were decent enough.

I think it would be a nice idea to restore the original palettes and concentrate more on the layouts. The palettes aren't just looking pretty odd, but also give the general game a "bad" feeling (at least for me). They layouts however are great! Really. Seems like you have a well skill for building secrets, cheap shots and everything pretty well.

Also:

Yeah, this is what I mean. The level layouts from this hack are simply EXCELLENT. And it is. I hope to see the palette issues fixed. This hack has potential. The only bad point are the palettes.

EDIT: I tried to download it by my friend's PC, so I noticed that the link isn't working.

Ok, I have restored all of the original palettes. Looking at them now...they were pretty terrible. I'l just focus on the layouts for a while :)

Wait, what the hell is this? Moderate but efficient usage of varied level terrain? Actual use of level gimmicks and objects to augment the level design and provide challenge, risk, and variety? No instant death traps when going too fast? Fair and reasonable obstacle and enemy placement complimented by more difficult but optional challenge areas that reward the payer for exploration and skill? A way of using those large up-and-down moving blocks in SYZ that isn't horrible or boring?

All of this is so strange and new to me? I don't know how to react so I will take the default route on your average internet forum and talk about what a horrible person your mother is. Yeah, I think that's the way to go!

Hey, I tried it out, and I have to agree that the layouts are really nice.

I was playing it while some friends were watching, and we kept exclaiming and laughing about all the surprises in the terrain. I liked the leaping Choppers in front of the spinning spiked log - I wasn't expecting that at all!

So many modded layouts are cluttered and feel changed just for the sake of being changed, and others are altered in order to accomodate new abilities (homing, etc). It's refreshing to play some layouts that feel like a traditional Sonic experience.

You have a talent for this. Keep up the good work! I'll be playing it again as soon as I get the chance. :)
