While playing in the compo mode I noticed something odd with the jump sprites so I take the sprites and compare them to a S3 sprite. No match, but when compared to an S2 sprite, theres a better resemblane. Sonic 3 Beta anyone?

Hmm, that is kind of interesting. Nice little find.

    Yes.

Sonic 3 originally used Sonic 2's sprites, as both a base for the new ones and even some leftovers in there. It's not a suprise the competitions sprites are no exception to this.

They probably decided to keep them because they looked better than their attempts to shrink the S3 sprites (by hand, of course). The clincher is the blue eye on the upside-down sprite.

Also, Tails' flying sprites are from Sonic 2.

A lot of his sprites are from Sonic 2, just with a different pallet. IIRC.

Aren't all of them from sonic 2, with the exceptions of the flying animation and the ones special for sonic 3. Without the darkest brown color.

They had to change the flying animation to fit his tired flying, and his swimming animations.
