Hello Sonic Retro community! I'm excited to share my project: a recreation of the first section of Segagaga in Unreal Engine 5, translated into English. But before getting into the details, let me introduce those uninitiated to this unique gem in Sega's history. Introduction to Segagaga Segagaga is a classic Dreamcast game released exclusively in Japan in 2001. It's a quirky blend of RPG, business simulation, and loving satire of the video game industry. In an alternate reality where Sega is struggling against its rival "DOGMA" (a thinly-veiled parody of Sony), players take on the role of a young recruit tasked with saving Sega from bankruptcy. What makes Segagaga truly special is its meta-narrative and countless references to Sega's history and games. It features cameos from various Sega characters and even Sega employees, creating a love letter to the company's legacy. Despite its limited release, Segagaga has fascinated Sega fans worldwide for its unique concept and self-aware humor. Project Overview Recreating the first section of Segagaga in Unreal Engine 5 Full English translation Covers everything from the start to the end of the first RPG section (excluding company management elements) Includes all cutscenes, gameplay, and most menus up to that point Translation and Gameplay Based on the open-source Segagaga translation project Dialogue modified for better flow Aiming for native port feel, matching original as closely as possible Short unlisted clip showing off basic dialogue: Audio Music taken from the original game New SFX design New English voice acting Project Goals Increase interest in the original Segagaga Boost support for a full translation patch of the original game Future Plans Updates will be posted on this forum Extended gameplay video will be released on YouTube Trailer to coincide with final release Final release will be available on GameJolt and itch.io I'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback on this project. Do you have and questions about the recreation process or suggestions for improvement?
I'm not going to sugar coat it. Every single time SGGG has been involved or named in a project, by fans or by Sega officially, it has failed to see itself finished. It's some kind of curse.
Yeah, I get the skepticism. The Segagaga translation cycle is pretty well-known at this point. But I'm hoping the limited scope and using a modern game engine instead of hacking the original ROM will help break the curse. This is more of a recreation than a traditional translation project, so I'm not wrestling with decades-old code. Any roadblocks will be from my own shortcomings, not the game's. I've got most of the big systems done already. The battle system is the last major hurdle, then it's just implementing the finished systems, and making a few subsections like the shop. Appreciate the concern, though. I'll be sure to post updates here as I go along.
Segagaga Encore: Development Update 1 I'm happy to share the latest progress on my Segagaga recreation project, now officially titled Segagaga Encore. First and foremost, I want to express my thanks to everyone who has shown interest and patience throughout this journey. Engine Migration Journey The extended gap between the first post stems from some significant technical challenges I encountered. After considerable effort with Unreal Engine 5, I faced two major obstacles: Persistent data corruption issues, likely stemming from early version control configurations A critical plugin breaking after problematic updates brought progress to a standstill These challenges led to a pivotal decision: rather than continuing to fight against these issues, I opted for a fresh start with Godot Engine. While the transition required an investment in learning new tools, Godot has proven to be much more suitable for my needs, offering better stability and a streamlined development workflow. Alpha Footage Milestone I'm excited to present the first alpha gameplay footage, showcasing the game from the title screen through to the first boss battle. (Obvious warning: contains Segagaga spoilers!) Key Features Demonstrated: Complete English Voice Acting: Four of our seven talented voice actors bring the cutscenes and in-game dialogue to life Core Battle System: While still in development, the fundamental turn-based mechanics are functional, including the signature employee taunting system HD Enhancement: UI elements and character portraits have been carefully upscaled and refined for modern displays Modern Quality-of-Life Features: Drawing inspiration from modern HD2D games, I've implemented features like free movement and cinematic camera to enhance the player experience Upcoming Milestones Comprehensive battle system including negotiation mechanics, item system, special abilities, and Yayoi implementation. Company Shop functionality How You Can Help Share the Progress: Check out the alpha footage and share it with fellow gaming enthusiasts Provide Feedback: Share your thoughts and suggestions to help shape the project's development Support Translation Patch: Remember that this project is just one approach to making Segagaga accessible; please continue supporting translation patch efforts Closing Thoughts Once again, thank you to everyone who has supported this project so far; your support drives this project forward. Let's bring Segagaga to a wider audience together! Feel free to ask any questions or share your thoughts below. I'm always eager to hear from the community! Cheers, Rengundo
