As a former Angry Birds fan I'm really interested on how this'll turn out. But since this is "took down AB for being successful" Rovio we're talking about... hmm.

Well, I certainly am interested... This doesn't seem like a particularly good move on SEGA's part though, but maybe I'm wrong. We'll just have to wait and see.

This will be a fantastic move for Sega... as long as they don't turn around and destroy good IP. Sega has a history of absorbing companies that, from my perspective, don't add long-term value to their business.

I would say Sega's history of absorbing western developers is the exact opposite of what you describe. All of Sega's top selling series today come from western developers they purchased, like Relic and Creative Assembly.

FWIW I don't think Rovio will be one of those kinds of purchases tho.

Angry Birds still makes a ton of money so I think this will be a good move on Sega’s part. A nice reliable source of income for ‘em.

What would surprise some is that 2022 was Rovio's most profitable year ever, well eclipsing the absolute peak of Angry Birds mania.

  10. Come to think of, that would be kinda cool actually if we'd get a 3D Angry Birds plataformer based on the... movie?

If this somehow results in the original Angry Birds coming back to PC and mobile then I'm happy. Otherwise I couldn't care less.

  15. Not for me, but SEGA have made so many good investments in Europe and its also nice to see SEGA able to have $1 Billion to spend too. Listen to some people, SEGA are dead and skint

  16. It actually went through for 775 Million, not the 1B that was in all the articles.

Still not a bad purchase if they leverage it right. Seems they want the expertise for mobile games for Segas IPs, it will be interesting to see how this plays out moving forward.

If they get some of the loons out of Rovio's management, it can only be a good thing.

"Here's all the major Angry Birds games on a console disc, £9.99".

I could see that selling on sheer quantity of content alone.

Because Rovio is an incredibly profitable company who’ll provide a nice steady flow of income to Sega while opening opportunities for expanding IP to more platforms?

Maybe they'll finally make that fucking Chao Garden mobile game that's been cried out for for years.
And keep the bloody things away from proper games =P
