I knew it was going to be something extra cute when the name was announced (before the logo was revealed). I’m disappointed it wasn’t some kind of game in this style or even a kids book but I’ll still watch them.

I can’t tell if they’re all going to be silent and as short as this, but it’s cute enough looking. It’s a bit depressing though to see content aimed at what I assume will be elementary schoolers on TikTok.

They look... Fatter than I was expecting.

Actually, I was half expecting it to use this model by Rafa Knight and others comparable to it:

But they don't seem to look similar at all.
But on closer look they do line up with the Bath Bomb figure models which were one of the first ways we even saw this style, at least for non-Boom Sonic.

personally I think the other one looks better in CG but I guess that's just not how it is.

Isn't that the model they used? It looks just the same to me.

Huh, this is an official blending of both classic and modern style, as it has elements of both in it.

It's actually interesting to see how they did that.

If they have again used Rafa Knight's model without crediting then it really bothers me. I know most gamers are very conservative and don't care about this kind of thing, but it really bothers me. I know contracts are made in such a way where you get small amounts of money and waive away your right to be credited, but it has happened often now and is really disturbing me. Its the state of the industry I know. Not unusual in the gaming landscape. But I think it is wrong.

I've heard Rafa was an unprofessional idiot who broke NDA bur it still bothers me.

Makes me think of what work was uncredited in the Classic Sonic games which we do not even think about. I'm reminded of that really interesting topic on here about the women who worked on Sonic 1.

  13. I rarely care about this kind of stuff (I’m very much laissez-faire with most topics) but it bothers me slightly too. I don’t think there should be any legal regulations for crediting in creative works, but I just don’t get why Sega wouldn’t do it in the first place. I don’t know Rafa, from what I saw, he or she behaved awfully, but I like the work and think people should be credited if they wish. You don’t lose anything by leaving a credit and risk a lot if there’s a backlash to you not doing it.

If they are Rafas models, well that’s the unfortunate thing about contractor work. You may not get credit for said work. It’s a tad scummy but if those were the terms then what’re you gonna do? Rafas behavior has been pretty shit overall though. Also, who knows, maybe they’ll credit the modelers in the credits of these features? I’m not even sure these are Rafas models though, they’re def close but there are differences. Sonic’s spikes for example.

Im sure after the Penders nonsense Sega made sure their contracts were tight (I know Penders was mostly suing Archie but that prob had some ripple effect to Sega legal).

Sonic Says: contract negotiation is important kids :eng99:

  15. Yeah, that’s the state of things, but I just don’t get why. I understand not crediting when they’re being used on random promotions, merchandise, TikTok shorts (assuming that’s the case here) etc., but for situations where credits will exist, what’s the point of hiding it. I can see why you’d ask people like Rafa to produce a variety of stuff and store them with internal assets for future use at the company’s discretion, but it’s not hard to credit somewhere.

But now I am wondering, have any of Rafa’s designs been confirmed to be used in a game or any other work that had credits attached? Because if we’re just going off this video, there’s going to be at least a dozen of people who weren’t personally credited.

I don’t think Rafas work has been used in games. Only another “maybe used” in Superstars but that’s not confirmed.

Amy's model in Sonic Origins Plus is a heavily modified version of Rafa's model. Some parts are different, but many parts are 100% identical down to the geometry. Comparison on Twitter

Additionally, the "but she was a contractor" element is a bit misleading. The contract she signed was for CG renders specifically, not the models themselves. She says this here.

I don't know. Maybe the angle is cheating it or something, but he looks slimmer and the spines seem different.

Guess I shouldn't have even bothered mentioning the source because I only really wanted to use the picture as an example of what I expected and source the image, not spark conversation about the source.

You can acknowledge that artists enter bad contracts aware of the conditions while also attacking the contract for being anti employee. Companies say employees take these contracts because they like them. We know they often have little choice other than not take it and damage career progression.

Same way you can acknowledge that companies make predatory microtransactions because they are extremely profitable while also attacking the microtransactions for being anti consumerist. Companies say consumers buy these microtransactions because they like them. We know they have no choice to get the sold good other than not buy it.

That’s fair. Not to defend corporate overloads, I suppose I just am not a fan of how Rafa handles herself.
