Actually he was even more of a wise-ass in the OVA and Fleetway comics.

 

Shadow the Hedgehog 2 will be announced, now featuring more weapons and swear as well as realistic blood. Also, Shadow will now be the series' mascot AND SEGA's mascot. Rejoice!

 

Now that you mention other characters, you just gave me a thought: what if SEGA was considering giving more emphasis to other characters again? Now, given if they do this right, I would love to see another game about Tails or the Chaotix again.

Or, what if it's not about new characters, but characters we haven't seen since the Saturn era? Think of all the Sonic characters SEGA's left in the dust since Sonic's redesign. For those of us who remember characters like Mighty, Ray, Bark, Nack, and the rest, bringing them back in the current style (officially) would shake the Sonic franchise a good deal. It's the same way Nintendo broke ground for the Mario franchise by reviving the Koopalings, and that was a pretty big deal for those who remembered them.

 

I would love to see a game featuring the return of Mighty. I'd also like to see Tails Adventure 2. Sadly, it's likely that neither will come to fruition.

 

Is it too late to throw wild guesses in?

If not heres my guess, they finally killed mighty's creator and stole back the copyrights from his beaten corpse! mighty has returned!!

Ugh, is that rumour still around? I thought it was disproven when Mighty was in a SEGA poll from a while back.

 

Well, it's only a matter of a few hours from me writing this post before we find out what the news really is, so hang tight...

 

Oh wait, why didn't I think of that earlier? They're probably gonna announce something related to Sonic's 20th anniversary.

 

And that's good how?

Everybody thought Sonic was cool back when he didn't say a thing, and now many people think he's annoying because he can't stop speaking for the player.

 

My take on it is that voice acting is great in moderation. Like everyone else on this planet, I got annoyed by the constant "Whoo!" vocalizations during gameplay. However, I fully support Sonic speaking during cutscenes. The problem is that they just can't find the perfect person to voice him. Perhaps the new guy (if that is indeed today's announcement) will do better and change opinions.

 

It's only as good or bad as the writing and acting accompanying it.

I was introduced to Sonic through the cartoons, AoStH particularly, so really, I never saw him as a character who doesn't talk. Not to say I particularly want a return to THAT particular portrayal, but... yeah. I'm willing to bet there are a decent people who had a similar perception of the character back then, for one reason or another. Even so, there's a certain "air" about Sonic in the old games that suggested that the only reason he wasn't a trash-talking badass was because the hardware wouldn't allow it.

 

Bubsy says otherwise. And boy, was he annoying.

 

Nothing about Bubsy exactly screamed quality. Two multiplatform platformers that were mediocre at best, a 1997 3D platformer that ranks among the worst games ever, and a cartoon that tried too damn hard to be "cool" and "hip". Bubsy serves as more of a warning than anything, in my opinion. Sonic thankfully isn't at the level of the aforementioned Playstation game, but I can see your point.

 

I had a horrible dream last night that this "franchise-changing news" would be a new game starring just Big the Cat! 0_O
