    Somewhere...I think...
Being a warm, fuzzy ball of controversy!
That was fucking epic and hilarious.

As for the name thing...well, I'm a bit half and half here.

    ROBOTNIK:
    1. I grew up with that name

    2. I sounds more awesome

    3. Sonic Adventure 2 stated it was his real name

    EGGMAN:
    1. I'm quite sure this was his intended name. Since I respect a person's right to their own characters, I call him this. (I call "Tails" Miles for this reason)

    2. He appears quite fond of that name as opposed to Robotnik

    3. He has a mustache (this may appear random, but it most ass-uredly relevant)

The way I see it, is he has always, and always will be both.

Think of it, like if you have a nickname. Like say Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli. His name is still Arthur Fonz.

    Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.

I would have t go with Robotnik, as it is his real name. Usually nicknames aren't created by the person themselves, and it just an alternate name agreed apoon by others. And who would really call themselves Dr. Eggman if they did look like an Egg-Rosevelt crossbreed? lol

    Eggman.

A while back I used to insist on calling him Robotnik, but I'd rather just use the original Japanese name.

Sometimes I use the convention that Genesis Eggman is Robotnik and post-Genesis Eggman is Eggman, but meh :\

400? That's HALF the speed of sound. I bet Sonic would tear to that statement.

    And Robotnik. Robotnik forever.

It's Eggman. He was called that in the original Japanese.

    Sorry. Get over it.

Humorously, Sonic the Hedgehog was developed in America and released in America first. The "original" Japanese is kind of... bullshit.

Even in Sonic X Eggman says that his true name is Ivo Robotnik.
Maybe originally his japanese name was Eggman alone, but today it was stated that Eggman his only a nickname.

    Robotnik all the way.
Funny thing is that I can't recall any moments that Robotnik called himself with his true name in the latest games (except SA1). I remember in SA1 Robotink being offended when Sonic called him Eggman, but at the same time there was an Eggman type of puzzle in the Egg Carrier. :v:

I prefer Eggman, myself. I agree with Tweaker in that it symbolizes his characteristics, and I prefer the Japanese continuity, also.

It doesn't bother me either way, with what he is called. I still prefer Robotnik as the name slightly more though. I always thought it was great when sonic called him Ro'butt'nik in the cartoon. That was just classic. There is also the factor that in Sonic Adventure 2 he states that Dr. Gerald Robotnik is his grandfather, so it only makes sense.

On the other hand, he is the only villan that I know of that is designed that way. So the name Eggman is indeed fitting for his character.

Like I said, I see it both ways.

Continuity? The only continuities I'm aware of are post Sonic-Adventure and Sonic X... both of which don't seem particularly Japanese (though certainly they are in origin, but that doesn't seem to be what you mean) to me. Could you elaborate?
There was that one single shot OVA thing... but it didn't seem to be any kind of part to a larger whole. Then there were a series of minor skits and things and some random art... but I don't know if thats enough to make up a "continuity".

I was sort of beginning to think that a key aspect to the Sonic franchise was an almost complete disregard for continuity. Whats there is fractured pretty heavily.

If you're familiar with the cartoon series, you could say that "Dr. Robotnik" was from the 16-Bit era...

And that Dr. Eggman represents the "modern" era...

Gathering information on Sega World Sydney and collecting Sonic merchandise.
I call his pre-Sonic Adventure design Robotnik, and his Sonic Adventure design Eggman. Ivo is "ovi", the Latin word for "egg" backwards, and "robotnik" is a Czech word meaning slave worker, that became the root of the word "robot". So Ivo Robotnik means egg worker, which is close to Eggman. Yuji Naka has explained that "Robotnik" is his "real name" while "Eggman" is a "common name taken after his shape." And by the way, Sega designed him to be egg-shaped so that he would be easy for children to draw.

I really just meant I like the Japanese manual's stroylines, because they were much more detailed than the American ones. Sorry, I guess I just handled that wrong.

Except that the cartoon version looks less like the 16 bit version than the modern version. And the name Eggman was actually referred to in-game in Sonic 2.
