    Emphasis added for effect.

Anyway, I use them both interchangably for the most part, maybe using Robotnik more often as that's what I'm used to, and ALWAYS when referring to the old cartoons, though the references to Robotnik as an Egg Man in AoStH did not go un-noticed by me, especially in Sonic Breakout (which sounds like a cool game in any case).

I'm going to go with Robotnik, too. I wasn't actually aware of the name change until a couple of years ago, and I was like "What's with this calling him eggman business, it makes no sense!". I much prefer Robotnik. It also makes Kintobor's name (from SatAM and StC) seem completely random (as opposed to being just flipped to show some sort of relation to Robotnik).

    Internet.
I generally accept his name as Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. With eggman just being a nickname. Best of both worlds, and it avoids dumb arguments.

I always thought Sonic had more in common with the long-eared hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus), as seen seen here:

The fact is is that Eggman can't even beat a fucking hedgehog, regardless of the species.

Hey you'd be pretty creeped out too by a 4 foot blue hedgehog that runs at 400 mph. That's an act against Nature. I'm guessing Robotnik was just hired for an extermination job.

I grew up knowing his name to be Robotnik and at first didn't like everyone calling him Eggman (even himself eventually, even though he discouraged the use of that name in the beginning of Sonic Adventure O.o). But now I'm somewhat used to his being called Eggman, especially since he's a villain you don't take too seriously nowadays anyway. So I seem to have fallen into the habit of calling him by either name somewhat interchangeably, though I usually refer to him as "Robotnik" when talking about the older games* and as "Eggman" when talking about the newer games.

*Should I have put a comma after 'older games'?

    Off-Topic:
You know what else seems contrary to nature? The fact all the events of the games which carry on the story have taken place in what has apparently been less than one year, considering everyone is still the same age. Robotnik/Eggman must be designing and manufacturing those robots of his at an incredible pace, probably coming up with and commencing a new plot to take over the world only every 3 days or so. Has anyone else besides me ever been bothered by this?

Perhaps the year there is far longer than that of Earth.

As true as that may be, I just don't think Eggman sounds at all evil. But hey, this is an opinion thread, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

That's not a bad way of looking at it; I never thought of it that way before. So maybe that's the way it is...

Another possibility is relativistic time-dilation. Super Sonic can apparently go so fast that he regularly escapes orbit. :P

Since when was Eggman this supposed serious, dark, evil character? He's always been a comical villain. He could be called Deadly McMurder, and his behaviour in the games and some of the spinoffs would make him seem silly. SatAM's about the only thing that tries to make him so utterly evil. Sonic 1-3 didn't have this attitude. It was colourful and amusing even in scenes of peril.

When he's defeated, Eggman's ship explodes, and he is left with a charred face and blackened moustache. It couldn't be more comical and silly if a large anvil landed on him afterwards, or if we found out he got his machines from the ACME Corporation.
