Honestly, I just prefer the name Robotnik. You can't say things like "roBUTTnik" with the name Eggman.

  2. Which would lead us to ask why they bothered having different names for the same guy in the first place...

Eggman comes from a Beatles song, from my understanding, there were afraid of a lawsuit.

What about enslaving defenceless animals, trying to kill Sonic in very brutal ways (Spring Yard Zone, Final Zone) or turning a planet into a metallic wasteland? I agree there are some strong elements of goofiness in Eggman, but I don't think its fair not to call him a serious villain. Perhaps its a matter of opinion but I felt Eggman was perhaps he's most serious at Sonic 1/CD, I'm basing this on theme music, weapons and general 'feel.'

At first I never knew about the japanese name Eggman. Like I didn't know Peach was Peach in japan all this time.

The first time I saw the Eggman thing was a little after I played Sonic Adventure one. I thought it was a "mean" name Sonic came up with because I remember him saying before then, "Hey Tails, look. A big fat talking egg!" Or something of that sort.

Oh for chrissake, this topic has been done to death. His name is Ivo Robotnik, and his nickname is Eggman. Both names are too ingrained now on both sides to be junked - END OF TOPIC.

Sorry, it's just we seem to have this exact same topic every 6 months in this community and that always turns out to be the consensus. Personally I prefer just using Robotnik but it doesn't make what I said before any less right =P

I voted Robotnik since that's the name I got used to from the start but since Sega erased 'Robotnik' from SA2 onwards I see no point in still calling him that, heh.
SA1 had the best way to use both, but they merely used it as a transition.

Although I don't care for the Eggman name, it's now easily 50% of the time what I was to refer to him.

I prefer Robotnik, not because an evil name automatically makes him evil, but because to me it signifies back when he was a more effective villain...

  12. Well that's just Capcom being paranoid. And they're still doing it.

    e: Don't forget Megaman!

Robotnik. In addition to that being the name I grew up with, it is infinitely cooler than Eggman. Let's face it you've got "Robot" right there in the name, which fucking rules, and the sufffix "nik" making it Russian. And we all know that Russians are complete badasses. Robotnik makes him out to be the evil scientific supergenius he was meant to be. Eggman just sounds like a lame superhero.

What I've always found rather amusing is that in the UK comics and stuff, eggs were more influential on his storyline when he was called Robotnik.

There was a time I was in love in the whole Japanese Sonic culture thing, and I preferred Eggman to Robotnik. But for some strange reason, I find myself starting to prefer Robotnik again... I dunno, I just don't see how you could have a Sonic game where the bad guy is named "Eggman" and really take him seriously.

But that's just the evolution of my opinion. I'm curious to know what others think.

Like most here, I grew up with the name Robotnik; however, I typically use Eggman due to now sticking with the Japanese continuity. It doesn't have anything to do with the "Japanese version is superior" mentality though, since it's just my nature to go with what originally is put forth. With this, I call him Eggman only in the games and Japanese anime, while I refer to him as Robotnik in the comics and American cartoons (although apparently, it seems like even Archie is trying to use the Eggman name, albeit with Robo-Robotnik and not with the original version).

On a side note, I can see how people would be annoyed with the Eggman name being used today. I'm sure many people would be pissed should Capcom decide to use Rockman, Blues, Dr. Right, etc. in the English continuity today. I wouldn't have minded if SoA still used the name Robotnik regularly, though.

I'll always call him Dr Robotnik. I connect the Robotnik name to the classic games and Eggman to new ones. I know that he was originally called Eggman in the Japanese versions, but I wasn't aware of the name until Sonic Adventure was announced, and I stopped caring about the series.

Robotnik. Definitely Robotnik. Eggman IS characteristic to his shape, but its not characteristic to his attributes, which is one of the first rules you learn in naming characters when writing fiction. What if Sonic had just been called Blue or maybe Azure, pertaining to his looks rather than his attributes? Do names by colour sound as attractive as names by attributes?

Granted this to some extent worked with Tails, but at the same time I'm brought to think of his actual name, "Miles Prower", which denotes the characteristic of speed he puts to use while following Sonic around. We've all got used to Tails and will forever call him that, but I think we can agree that in some manner, Miles Prower is more attractive and fitting.

... am I just blowing wind here, or does anyone see what I'm getting at?

    Silver the Hedgehog. :v:

I don't know, I just think "Eggman" really makes the comical nature of the character shine, especially since he's never been somebody to take seriously. Come on, he's a bumbling failure every single time without failure! How does that imply a serious, threatening force to be reckoned with? :)
